Anamorphic Shootout

considering you can't go as wide
I agree with your post, but the above statement is untrue. The Zeiss ZE 21 works with the panasonic perfectly as far as wide lenses go. It would work for establishing and master shots, and scope shots in general, even at f/2.8 without the use of diopters. As I said above, I don't know what the best options are for other focal lengths but this combination is a dream.

Yeah sorry i shouldnt be so wide scoping, but the la7200 from what i've seen just makes it too soft, dof adapter like. But yeah......to be honest if they had a 1.33x adapter in the 2-3000 dollar range capable of the isco like clarity, id be onboard.

But they are all just a lil too soft for me with way too much work to just acheive cinscope. Id argue cropping would actually get you a better image than an adapter, maybe all except the isco.

Excuse the crudity of my appearance, as I currently have the flu. This test isn't very scientific, as I didn't have a test subject besides myself. I missed my focus marks in all 3 tests haha.
21mm f/2.8 ISO 640 1/50 Shutter. Shot in CineStyle, with LUT applied.

Is it perfect? No, but it is it workable and usable? Absolutely.

I may have to put my foot in my mouth and eat crow..........hate crow, tastes like asparagus....lol.....anyways, i liked these, obviously the focus is off but when you concentrate on what is in focus, it comes off pretty impressive. Shot an entire wedding with unintentional "soft focus".....ha, ha.

Hmmmmm, just to clarify here, you are using the la7200?.......with any diopters?......which camera?.....and The Zeiss ZE 21 2.8 right?........well i would probably pursue a more affordable nikon glass kit just for my own lower budget means.......anyways, do you have a vimeo page?

Lovely.....lol......well like i said the isco is the dream......but for 3000 would make me feel odd at dslr prices.........and i just remembered my thoughts on the la7200, which were that that was the 1.3x for me........then a potential deal breaker occurred to me...near impossible to stick a matte box on it. Important to me because, i'm not really searching for that anamorphic flare, just the cinema scope.

Thoughts??

Anyways, i think the site is lovely, the blank pages just add that oh so important artistic-negative space.....lol.

Btw if you have anymore ziess distigons gathering dust.......i double as a zeiss lens cleaner, so send them over, however outgoing mail where i am tends to be slow so it may take a couple years to get back to you.

:cheesy:

Lol I might just have to use your lens cleaning service.

Cinetactics makes an anamorphic matte box made of a canvas-like material. It was made specifically for the LA7200. I got lucky when I bought mine 6 years ago. Bought the basic package and they sent me the deluxe kit with all the flags and filter folders.

Hmmm, you correct me at every turn...lol......yeah i've seen those, something to think about.....i'm assuming you can't use 4x4 filters with them.....anyways, ill be giving it all some thought......just can't make the isco argument.......im at the dslr price point and if i had an extra 3000 to spend on the isco i'd just get an af100/fs100, ha, ha.

Thought of these as cheaper matte boxes, not sure they look as "bitchin" as the normal matte box's but hey, can't "always look cool on a budget.

Thanks btw

I did some playing around yesterday and realized that the redrock matte box (which I already own) fits over the anamorphic adapter. The only way to really do it, however, is to attach the adapter to the lens, feed it through the matte box and attach it to the camera. Not the most user friendly solution, but nothing about the anamorphic adapter is user friendly. The next step is finding a donut to block out that excess light. I'm sure I can rig something up.

Moller 32/2x Anamorphot Test footage. Another Great lens.

Moller 32/2x Anamorphot Test footage. Another Great lens.

The Moller 32/2x anamorphot is another excellent lens for crop sensor cameras like the Canon 550d, 600d, 7d, Panasonic GH2, Sony NEX-5N etc.
Sharp even wide open, with nice oval bokeh and unique warm flares.
With its 39mm rear diameter and its small size, it does not vignette with taking lenses from 50-58mm.
This clip contains some quick random tests of the lens to test its potential.
It is tested on the Canon EOS 550d with an Auto Revuenon 55mm f1.2 taking lens. Everything is shot mostly wide open!
On some close ups I have used a couple of low power diopters (+0.5) to overcome the 5-6ft minimum focus distance of the anamorphot. This also illustrates that good quality low power diopters are essential when shooting with anamorphics lenses in order to get nice sharp close ups (the last few shots have also been realized using the Helios 40-2 85mm f1.5 lens, apart from the Revuenon 55mm and combination of close up diopters to cover all ranges).
In my opinion this lens is as sharp as the Kowa 8-Z (or 16-H), which is considered to be the next best thing to the Iscorama holy grail of anamorphic lenses. It is just that the smaller physical dimension of the lens makes it less useable on full frame.
Comments are welcome.

If I am not mistaken, the Sun lens is a Sankor/Singer copy. So it is good for crop sensor, and shoulbe comparable to the Moller 32/2x.

By contrast, I do not know anything regarding the Moller 46/2x. What is the minimum focus distance mark on the lens barrel?

@kostas The Moller, it's a projection lens with 5m. minimum focus distance. Here is the link for the Moller 46/2x : http://qc.kijiji.ca/c-ViewAdLargeImage?AdId=344592382
I have not try the Sun anamorphic yet. I been waiting for my clamps. I also order three other anamorphic lenses : two Kowa 2x (Prominar + Bell & Howell) and also one Iscomorphot 8/1.5x.
I will try to fixe all theses lenses on my GH2. I know you haved already try theses lenses. Thanks for your help !

5m is way too long as minimum focus distance. This lens may be good for filming epic landscape at infinity...Regarding the other lenses you got, the Kowa is amazing 2x and it is probably the best, so no need to mess with the Sun and the Moller 46. The iscomorphot is very very handy as it is tiny and needs only single focusing as the Iscorama. You will probably stick with it, especially if you can stop down your lens a bit to get rid of the smearing @ wide open. Enjoy!

Whats prime lenses is better ?

Whats prime lenses is better ?

@kostas Do you have any advice on primes lenses to put on Kowa anamorphic lenses? I have a Kowa Bell & Howell 2x (the back tread is 54mm or series 7) ans have also a Kowa Prominar 2x (the back tread seems to be arround 50.5mm). I did not received my Iscomorphot 1.5x and I don't know what will be the back tread? I haved a lot of russian lenses (Helios, Jupiter, Industar) and one Voightlander 25mm f/0.95. What did you use with all yours anamorphics lenses? Again, thank you for your help.

My first few tests with a gh2+helios44M+eiki 16f.
Cheapest anamorphic setup I could find ,i just wanted to see what the fuss was about:D

I've had the eiki 16f for 1 week and I have to say anamorphic lenses are tough to use... but maybe I'll get better at this damn focusing 2 lenses thing.

Hopefully I can become as good as @beeldlab I love his videos including the non anamorphic ones.
