Anamorphic Shootout

Shot a quick test on my way down the block to dinner tonite. If was windy and freezing, otherwise I would have stayed out longer.

-Still need to adjust the focus to infinity a bit better
-using the 75mm handheld run and gun is no bueno. Will be happy to be locked down on a tripod with this lens.
-Unsqueezed in FCP using aspect ratio @ -100, is this right for 2x anamorphics?

BTW I just bought that Sony CLM-V55 Monitor (since it was relatively cheap) and with a 2x lens the 90% safe zone for 4:3 is just a tiny bit more of a crop than you would need when blowing 3:56 up to 2:40 FYI. Seems easier to use that, than tape off the monitor each time I wanna shoot anamorphic.

Anyone have any experience with shooting anamorphic telephoto, and cutting that with wide spherical primes that are matted? I'm toying with the idea of shooting my upcoming short anamorphically....but I'd be stuck with a 75mm and 50mm. It would be great if I can matte my 18mm prime to intercut with the anamorphic 50 & 75, but will it be noticeable?

I LOVE THIS LENS!!! I own 9 of them! :) I also have the Helios 44 58mm F2.0...looks GREAT with this (I own 8 of these)....I have some footy...but it doesn't look great....I was actually testing some color correction (looks awful BTW...)....and Noise reduction....(over done BTW). I have a VERY effective system for lens support and focus. I've even shot hand-held with it. :) I'm so glad that you're enjoying this lens....the flares are the best I've seen...bar NONE! Looking forward to more footy from you!

ps....I'll be selling some Hypergonar with support over the next 2-3 months. :)

I would be interested in one. PM me!

I ordered a 2x Bausch and Lomb Cinescope a while ago. Its pretty neat but I still would love to have a compact like the sankor 16d. Anyone had any experience with this one. I have not seen alot in regards to this brand or type. It was super cheap and i could not pass it up. Havent used it yet because im waiting on the clamp. It has a weird 70.6mm end Dia. Feedback if any, or suggestions. Thanks

Check out this Nescafe commercial: http://vimeo.com/5726584

It was shot mainly with Lomo roundfront anamorphics, but the kitchen shot with the actor is done with 18mm spherical. The details are here: http://www.lomo235.com/Fredrik_Callinggard.htm

You can tell that the kitchen shot isn't anamorphic, but I think it cuts well. The commercial looks great, and I would probably have never noticed if I hadn't read the description first.

Thats actually a great example, I've seen that commercial before but never gave a thought about that one kitchen shot not being anamorphic...cuts very well. Kind of amazing they shot wide open all of the time, thats crazy.

I'm slowly selling myself on shooting a short in a month in anamorphic. I've got a 75mm roundfront, 50mm square front frankensteined rig which I think I can work with...but it would be nice to know I can cut in an 18mm spherical lomo if needed. Jury is still out, until I convince myself to just go for it.

Quick test of the Vidoscope 32/2x lens which is up for sale in the marketplace of the forum:

I did a short, non scientific, comparison between different anamorphic lenses (most with 1.5x ratio).
No pixel peeping, which would have been pointless anyway, but it yields interesting results because the Iscorama appears to have serious contenders for crop sensor cameras...

Hah sorry bout that! Snatched it up real quick...now I have a small set 35, 50, 75 and can stop spending money I don't really have!

No worries :) (as our Aussie friends say!).

I have a set of Squarefronts (35/50/80) but they're 70's versions - so I was just pondering grabbing this one to see how a 60's version differed in lens coatings & overall look :)

Agree on spending cash - my other half sort of understands lens 'frenzy'... I wonder how long I can keep hiding the bills from her? LOL.

I'll let you know once I get it, which will hopefully be tomorrow, or monday since its not shipping very far. I'd imagine they are more or less the same though probably will flare more thanks to the coating...which I guess can be a plus since everyone is going crazy over how these flare.

I'm trying to convince two of the directors I'm shooting shorts for next month to do it in anamorphic so I can justify their cost!

I'm really torn with selling my 7D to pay off some of these lenses, and just shoot with my GH-2...but I know the second I do that I will regret it!

I'm kind of a newb to this and most likely renting HHL's set to shoot tests, but am also curious about the Lomo Squarefronts. Will these mount to a T2i/550D without overhauling the camera? They are OCT19 mount and can be converted to PL mount, is that right? I remember seeing someone, I think in Australia, who sold OCT19 replacement mounts for the T2i, and I think he said the square mount Lomos work with it.

the squarefronts rear mount is too big so they wont mount on a Canon unless the mirror is removed. Round front's will fit though.

I ended up getting a GH2 and OCT19 adapter so I'll be able to use the squarefronts.

Hmmm... kind of makes me think of just switching over to the GH2 just for all the easier mounting options. Canon's are a p.i.t.a for this stuff. I'm not too familiar with the GH2's, but I did read that GH2 hack April Fool's thread... thought it was true for a moment.

Then there's this Century Adaptor that's apparently hd some work done to it for HDSLR's at ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Anamorphic-lens-all-HDSLR-similar-AG-LA7200-Mint-/170636531454?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item27babad6fe#ht_1188wt_916

Can see a decent anamorphic bokeh in the sample videos, but they're not filmed very well and jump all over the place. Very difficult to tell. Same is true of his other videos too, though. Sigh... decisions, decisions.
