Anamorphic Shootout

I just order a T2i and had it 2 day shipped. This means that I should get some Iscorama footage (mine is an EOS mount) on a T2i by this weekend! :) We'll see what that looks like! (The arrival date is this Friday, Feb 26, 2010)

:)

I assume that the 1.5 x anamorph lenses are much better for use with 16/9 cameras.

Since they (1.5x) will have a 2,66 aspect while a 2x lense will have about 3,55...

(I am just taking the width (1920) x 1.5 / height (1080) or 1920 x 2 / 1080)

Or am i missing something vital? Or does it crop? so it stays close to the 2,66 format?

sorry if this is an obvious question...
Yea and by the way this is my first post at this great forum!

Thanks for a quick reply. So everybody who has a 2x anamorphic like the kowa lenses need to crop alot? Or get a really wide picture...

hahaha funny to see the anamorphic gang invade the 7D board. Normally I wouldn't even look into here. just by pure accident.

It'd be useful if there was a bit of an 'idiot's guide' to anamorphic dslr stuff. I'm getting my 550d on Tuesday, and finding all this stuff about anamorphic lenses/adapters has got me all excited about trying to get something like that working for the canon.

So... would any of these three lenses be useful at all? And if so, how would I get them attached to the 550d? Step-down ring/specialised anamorphic adapter/elastic bands and pvc glue?!

This is a solid lens. I have one just like it. Kowa 16A...I don't have stepup rings for it yet...so no help there for you.

This one you will need the 52-42mm step down ring. It won't fit the threads because the pitch is too small on the lens. It will need to be superglued. Easy to do, solid fit, not too hard to remove, (3 hits with a hammer did it for mine) :) This is the Sankor lens that you see footage posted on everywhere.

This one doesn't SPECIFY that it's anamorphic. Ask the seller. They don't know much about it so ask them if when they look through the lens it looks "elliptical", even though it's round in reality. I hope this helps! Good luck.

I purchased the Prima Anamorphic 16mm but the lense is Tiny.

THAT SUCKS!!!!!!!! I have seen a few anamorphic lenses that are TINY too. RRRRrrrrrr.....what REALLY SUCKS is that if you see the dimensions, without a comparison, it looks EXACTLY THE SAME. THAT'S TERRIBLE!! Will you please post pics and the same/model so that this doesn't happen to someone else? I'll do the same this weekend with mine so that people will know to avoid these models. This should also mean that everyone should start asking for the LENS DIMENSIONS before purchasing one. I'm so sorry speedjunkie. I wish I would have thought to warn you about that. It looks just like my Sankor 16c.....I'm sure that it doesn't when put in perspective with some other object (human hand, a coin such as a quarter...etc)

I will tell you why I haven't gotten rid of the two that I have. I plan on using mine with a compact camera....I have tested it on an Exilim camera that I have, (crappy video from 4 years ago)....I will be using it on a newer version that I plan on purchasing.

Again: WARNING TO EVERYONE! There are a group of anamorphic lenses that are likely unusable on DSLRs because they are sooo tiny. ASK FOR SIZE DIMENSIONS BEFORE you purchase!

Sorry Speedjunkie.

Thanks Speedjunkie. Could you please post some size dimensions? I'm still kinda having a problem with your dimensions. (I can't really tell how small it is.) I'm glad you got it to work with your Nikkor glass. Which one? I'm also glad that you feel that it's sharp. Cool! I'll post some pics of the small lenses that I have.

hey I can't see the link anymore but is that the 16c? did the 40.5mm not work for you?

the Prima Lense without the Adapter that Come with it has a Thread size of about 38mm, with the adapter on it the thread size on that is about 67mm
