anamorphic lens focal length advice

yes in theory the taking lens you set a manual f stop, set infinity and focus with Iscorama with 85mm 1.2.jpg
the large Isco front ring. You CAN focus with the taking lens but images so much sharper if you use the Isco.
Iscorama with 85 1.2 and a +1 close diopter. Its easy to use as is as it was designed for still shooters. Kowa's, a projector lens like any of the other anamorphic adaptors Sun, bell and howell can be clamped on to a taking lens with similar effects.

Where does one get a new or a set of cine Lomo anamorphic lenses !?
Not used ! Been Googling bet it's not to clear to me if they still make new one.

Thanks ,
Everts

pretty much just Ebay. It's all old Russian lenses from the 70's and 80's. Seen a few sets on Reduser posted by Ruskies.

I've tried emailing that sergey guy on Reduser about his lomos and he only responed to one of my questions. If he would have been more communicative I would of had me a set of square fronts by now.. but oh wells, this isco solution sounds better though.

As biginvegas said, Ebay is your best chance. Also lens/rental houses sometimes get rid of stock. Authentic Lomos (Squares and Rounds) ceased production when the USSR ended. So the old versions are always second hand and cheaper - Squares approx $1500 per lens and Rounds at $3000-$4000 per lens in their original Oct-19 mount (they'll be more expensive if converted to PL, as the lenses are normally serviced at the same time - or you buy and get them converted/collimated so that can add $500-$800 per lens).

If you want new Anas look for Hawk - http://www.hawkanamorphic.com/en/index.php or the company that has carried on the Lomo lens tech - Elite - http://www.optica-elite.com/ - these are new Cine primes so expect to pay high $.

I've dealt with Sergey before and found him OK. English is not his first language and sometimes things get lost in translation, so I adopted shorter emails (that were much more direct) and found that was fine.

But, the Isco route seems like it may suit what you're doing. It really depends on your style and the nature of the shoot :)

Interesting, have you bought anything from him? I've never seen anything sell from him on reduser. I'd still be open to his items if I know my money wont disapear into outer space. The rafcamera guy us pretty good, answered all my questions so far.

Yes, I've bought from Sergey.

He's been selling for some time - I'd presume he wouldn't be allowed on there to sell if there were issues?

Looking on Ebay there are others around ATM... some are a bit overpriced IMO.

Personally, I went Oct-19 BAS (Anamorphic shooting unit) rather than Oct-18 NAS (Anamorphic shooting attachment) as the BAS Squares are single unit designs and the NAS ones are attachment lenses to specific Lomos (and have fixed lens support under the Squarefront). I know that these NAS units have been modified to take other lenses... but, going down the Isco (et al) route would probably be better than the lens surgery I've seen!

cool, so which focal lengths did you get? What do you find being your standard/normal lens.. a 50 or 35. My usual is 28-35mm but I'm assuming anamorphics it would be different.

I went for the normal set of BAS Squares (35/50/80).

On standard/normal lens choice - my preference (non anamorphic) would normally be 35-50. But anamorphic composition is different (as you say) and makes for some interesting options. Obviously the nature of Ana is the horizontal is approx half the height of the vertical - so a 35 becomes 35mmX17.5mm or 50 is 50mmX25mm, this makes framing/shot choice different to sphericals.

Against my better judgement I've been leaving the 35 on for more testing than I expected... I say this as it's the slowest of the set (T2.8) and is easily the most prone to barrel distortion. However, if you carefully frame I do like the look. It also has the closest min focus distance at 1m. Sourcing a diopter for the 35 is difficult (I don't know if one was made) but the 35 works well and the nature of the ana framing means you'll be getting that great widescreen feeling. 35 is also the lightest of the set, so OK for Steadicam & handheld - although you must keep an eye on vertical alignment (ie the lens stays upright) as the nature of the two lens system means you get distortion if you make the camera pan/tilt/spin - try & keep things in one axis of movement - so no dutch shots on the squarefront. Steadicam is fine as this dampens radical X/Y changes.

The 50 is really nice - at T2.4 just that bit faster (although as I said before - tight focus is an issue at wider stops and you do get edge softness towards the corners of frames). Certainly it has nice bokeh and really should be the lens used most. It doesn't distort as much (but you still have to watch the X/Y changes) and is actually quite wide in it's horizontal. Min focus is about 1.5m - you can get special squarefront dipopters or clamp on larger diopters to the sqaurefront itself (as the front on the 50/80 is much smaller than the one on the 35).

The 80 is basically your bokeh maker - for the shots with your talent against soft backgrounds. Really for the times when you'd pull out a cine lens of a similar focal lengh (80-100). Whilst it's not first choice a lot of the time, it is useful to have.

So, I can see why the set is needed. If pushed, I'd drop the 80. Don't forget these are cine primes so (without opening the debate about full frame vs 35mm still vs 35mm cine etc) these lenses will give your compositions/shots/framings a different feel.

Hope that helps - all just my thoughts really. Folks like Hunter & Ryan may be able to input their thoughts too.

lol I added that to the watch list a couple days ago.. was waiting to see when the cat would get out.

MadMonk, you have a PM.

I have already talk about it before but it did not get a lot of attention http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?226510-Anamorphic-lens-adaptor-the-missing-link&highlight= . Why don' t people here lobby Panasonic to give a successor to the ag-la7200 anamorphic adapter. The adapter which was produce for SD definition is already quite good on the 4/3 format. It sell for about $ 700, it would just need an update from Panasonic for a little better quality for HD and longer focal length and sell it for $ 1000.

The 2.35 look is the last element missing to get the real cinematic look. They brought the large sensor look to affordable level now with the af-100 and this camera is clearly targeted at the filmmaker (indie), just update this adapter. It is not as if they will have to start from scratch and they did respond to a need for the DVX-100 before, they could do the same for the Af-100 (same target market). The Ag-la7200 was devise to make 16.9 video out of 4.3 ratio. Now we need the anamorphic 2.35 from the 16.9 chip. Look at all the thread on this subject. People have been doing all sort of test and experiment to get this look. Lens that cost a couple hundred dollars on ebay are now being sold at least ten time the price. There is a real need for the anamorphic look and Panasonic will sell a lot of these. Now we have someone like Jan to talk to directly, I don't understand why people don't lobby Panasonic about such an adapter.
