Alzo 300 LED light

I'll be sure to update as the project comes along. The first thing I have on the roster is a fashion style piece with no sync sound so I will wait till after before I start to mod them. At least get one shoot out so their paid off. lol

By the posts in this thread, it looks like people are going with the 3200 over the new 3300. Is it because of the requirement for a ballast in the 3300 (which also needs to be fan cooled; i.e. more potential for fan noise)?

For me it came down to money and how much I wanted to risk on something that wasn't proven tech and could be loud. The 3200 style seemed like decent price to performance.

I didn't end up doing the mod at all. The shoot I had ordered the light to use on fell through and I haven't really pulled it out of the closet as I've been busy on other things. I still like the light and it gives off a ton of cool light but the fan is loud. When I get some downtime I will try swapping out the fan.

I emailed Drew at Alzo Video with a question about whether the green spike was improved in the 3300 and got this response:

We are currently working on a 100 watt high CRI silent LED and then we will add a 200 watt after that, some time in 2015. There are no 300 watt high CRI COB LEDs available today or in the near future.

He suggested that these lights would be available at "near double" the cost of the current lights. Sounds interesting.

I read through this thread a while ago and forgot if anyone mentioned if there was a difference in fan noise between 3000 and 3200?

I've decided to sell my leko's and tota light. I just bought the skylux to use as a key light (quit and high CRI so I can bring it in close) and bought the alzo 3300 as general bright room fill. I intend on eventually selling my 6 lowel pro lights and replacing them with Fiilex P360ex lights. Can't wait to be entierley LED...

I'll try to post results on the 3300 for those interested.

@egproductions I'm also very interested in your thoughts on this light.

I ordered a pair of 3200s with barndoors that arrived yesterday, as well as some 1/8 minus green to take down the green spike. I removed the built-in diffusor and was able to confirm with my meter that I am indeed getting an extra stop of lighting over my 1000w tungsten Rifa 88. The diffusor knocks the luminance down by about two stops though. I am not sure if leaving the bare LED exposed like this is a good idea -- I haven't worked with an LED like this one before but I assume that it is pretty fragile. I'd be interested to hear what other users are doing.

Where I see me using this light is as BG splash to add a mixed colour BG to my tungsten key light (intv) or outside where the fan noise won't be an issue as outdoors is never quite. like a baby HMI except at this point I don't know if I would key with it. Too loud to be that close to camera.

My hope is to use my new 3200s as poor man's HMIs.

Here's a test shot taken at night with one coming through the window (it's a below-ground garage so half of it is blocked by a corrugated iron well), and another behind a 6x8 diffusor as a fill that is about six feet from the talent:

I don't have a spectrometer so I balanced to 5300k, which is what the website says.

Thanks, DvxHerb.

Today I did a quick test this afternoon to see how my pair of Alzo 3200s (with 1/8 minus green gel) look in a composition with actual daylight. I shot these with ML raw so I can bring back a lot of the detail in the blown out areas, but I left everything untouched and ungraded for demonstration purposes:

This weekend I shot a short film for a competition similar to the 48H Film Festival. Since the stakes were low, it seemed like a good opportunity to experiment so I brought along my brand new 3200s. My gaffer and I lit the whole thing with the pair of them. It was his first time working with them and he told me that he liked them. We had a tungsten kit there too, but those lights never came out. When we needed tungsten light to match the practicals for the evening shots, we gelled them and they still provided plenty of punch. No complaints from the audio guy either about the fan noise (though, he was not a pro soundie, so I would take that with a grain of salt).

Just got my 3300 and a 28" beauty dish. As expected Bright and Loud. The PSU and head both have fans of about equal noise. The PSU can be muffled but the head is impossible to muffle (and I wouldn't recommend it as the head gets as warm/hot as a gaming laptop) Both fans together equal about the noise that comes from my desktop computer.

Haven't tested with a light meter but I would eyeball the output at about 2.5K-3K tungsten equivalent.

Still waiting on my skylux for comparison shots and to test color shift.
