FS7: Almost cannot believe it but... FM 3.0 is here.

The description seems like they have fixed a good chunk of the original issues and added some great features here.

One FW question. I didn't update the last FW as it didn't fix anything I had issue with and my camera was already stable heading into a larger project. Do I need to update to previous vrs then to FW3.0 or can I just go to FW3.0?

I went from 2.0 - 3.0. No issues other than wonder what the hell that noise was when the fans spun up.

There's a lot of nice touches that will be really useful and it feels a lot nicer to navigate the menus and I'm sure it boots quicker.

It definitely boots quicker and the menu seems snappier. Focus magnification is great. Centre scan is great. Interval recording is a passable. 0% zebra is great. Noise suppression in Cine EI, should be good, will fully test, but probably leave off 99% of the time. Waveform with LUT, would prefer the WFM to reflect the underlying SLog, so a wasted opportunity for me. And having to switch SDI2 on and off to switch between LUT on/off and retain the WFM is just plain dumb. Now for the RAW...

Glad the 2.0 direct to 3.0 worked. I honestly didn't have the answer and can't get Juan this AM.

I do not have any Super16 or B4 glass here so really looking forward to seeing some tests.

I should have a piece about it on Redshark outlining the changes-- it went in the moment I heard Japan released.

Concur that faster boot up MOST welcome, and menu navigation is definitely snappier - almost on par with every other camera - wahey! Also the new focus mag is actually USEFUL *gasp* - you can see detail instead of a some sort of CCTV frame-grab - whoop.

I downloaded the Japanese version so can't read the manual - can anyone tell me where in the menu the center-crop function is located?

[EDIT] - Just found it - under base settings [EDIT]

Cheers, jason

Doing the upgrade as we speak! WFM with luts was something I was looking forward to but not now since I started to adjusting the image so that the big chunk of the data on the WFM is in the middle or a bit above the middle. That works great this far!

NR in Cine EI is awesome and just another reason to never go to custom. If you want variable ISO just burn in the Type A LUT of any other and use the NR if needed. I think that the NR will allow me to shoot SLOG3 at a concert or in a club where the image might have dark parts and so on without having to apply heavy Neat video in post. The centre crop just gives me another reason to never take of the Sigma 18-35, that lens just got way more interesting =).

Just an interesting detail I noticed, I right clicked on the update file to see when it was created, Dec. 15th, so this update has been completed quite some time but I guess that they had to test it out pretty hard before release.

Update: Just noticed that the image crop function can not be set to an assignable button, shame!!

Thanks for props, but it was not me :) That was a person on FS7 facebook group that have found it first.

Very nice to have most of the annoying quirks fixed now!

Metabones Speedbooster Ultra with Sigma Art 24-105 is now blazing fast on the iris dial. Great!

very reassuring from Sony. Hope this will shut the naysayers up for a little bit.
Has anyone tested The quality of center crop yet?

I farted bout with the centre crop in S&Q mode but with not enough light but even so there was less aliasing. On Thu. I should be shooting and I'll fire off some test shots to compare in good light.

I'm very pleased with the update, I'm glad the menus no longer feel like on a work to rule and the boot speed is a pleasant surprise. It really does look like the shutter bug is gone too so no more paranoid checking of the top left of the VF!

I hope Sony will continue to update the FS7 and maybe increase codec bitrates.

I share same feeling Nirv, could you explain little more the differences beetween the two center crop and what is the best of the two please ?

The centre crop uses a smaller area of the sensor and no longer exhibits the ugly aliasing except for a bit of highlight haloing. Obviously the smaller area of sensor means a narrower field of view but I don't see that as a huge issue.

The Full Scan is what we're used to with the aliasing but wider FOV.

There are similar options in the Base Setting menu of the camera.

I like having both options so I can decide how I want to record S&Q as opposed to the C300II which is only crop forcing a lens or location change to record S&Q.

Much, much more pleasing experience now. Faster menu and faster boot up time makes it much better run n gun camera. That was constantly slowing me down - I often left settings as they were because changing for more suitable would require to much time.

Note.
Recording indicator in clean display option still not present :|
