  • Kinda funny how everyone who has purchased a scarlet so far has given me the same excuse, they are working on a feature film that will wind up in theaters??? yea right! Seems funny to me that everyone I have spoken to that has bought or is buying a scarlet has a feature coming out on the big screen so overnight everyone became a director and a dp that owns a scarlet lol internet, and small screen is what most of u will only do. be humble and admit it. I don't understand this behavior ??? I have been getting lots of negative responses for using a fs100 saying I'm not a pro because I shoot fs100 and not Scarlet, at first was considering scarlet but loved the fs100 for look, price, sensor, lightweight, etc. as soon as I made my choice and let my RED ppl know what direction I was going in they said I would never be taken seriously with the fs100??? So confused about this behavior since when does what camera u shoot with define what and who u are and not the material itself??

A camera will not make up for a bad script, art direction, direction and acting. That is my response and I have owned a RED ONE since the beginning.

That's called ambition. It's what makes creatives tick.

Obviously the real world will step in for most, but for others perhaps, just perhaps they're good enough to break through.

If you're suggesting that by buying a scarlet they will automatically make it then yeah, obviously. But like the great desktop publishing revolution - which produced 99% utter crap but 1% pure talent that otherwise would never have made it into design - it's a good thing. Unless you're a festival screener and have to sit through these new films :)

cheers

Why cant u all admit you bought it for indie work that will never see the darkness of a real movie theater. So, essentially you're trying to insult ALL Scarlet owners with this post?
(who've likely had their camera for under a month?)

Is there any intent here other than to instigate an argument?

My advice- Be happy with your purchase and stop talking to Red users or about Red products.
Go make a bunch of movies with your FS100 and rent what you choose not to buy, be it ARRI, Red,
Sony F65, etc...

If you think Spielberg and Jackson and Lucas never made a stinker of a movie or a project that never went anywhere
on a LESSER camera than you currently own, think again. Look to your ultimate destination and work on your craft
instead of looking to others for arguments.

A better post would be- "here's my latest short filmed on FS100- Hey, I'd like some feedback
on color correction, or editing, or sound, or foley etc"

Why not make your next post about you're currently working on so you can get constructive feedback?

Haters gunna hate.

But seriously, I'm troubled by this comment. On one hand, the type of camera someone uses is irrelevant and does not reflect their skill.

On the other hand, you make it seem like indie films are worthless. An indies like the red scarlet because it gives them something that they couldn't have before. Of you plan on making a feature for the screen, use a camera that holds up well. And I'm not saying that hd looks bad, but 4k is better. Hd for small screen, and now that 4k is affordable, use that for big screen. It's called distribution plans.

Wow, HD is for small screen? I beg to differ. The hottest digital cinema camera is the Arri Alexa, which is "HD" resolution, not 4K. There are tons of theatrical big releases using this camera. The reason? It's reliable, produces great images with great latitude, and professional DPs know how to use it. Starting with Star Wars attack of the clones, digital cinema became a reality, and that was done on what is "HDV" resolution, 1440 x1080, how much did that film gross worldwide, how many theaters did it project in?

The FS100 has the same resolution as the Alexa, though many more limitations with the codec and workflow as well as less latitude. A 4K workflow is great for 'future proofing' as well as the ability to reframe a bit in post, however it's at a huge cost in workflow, such as storage, processing, etc. It's a big commitment that can drive up the cost of production. Not to mention the fact that Red in general are still forever in 'beta' mode, where even pros that use Red often have to have backup cameras in case theirs crashes. I have heard a lot of horror stories about using Reds on set. I don't expect the Scarlet to be immune from this.

Fact is, most big screens people see, unless it's a special screening room, is pretty horrible, with dimming bulbs that need to be replaced, dirty and scratched prints, and is often out of focus. 2k or 4K, most people don't' see the best of either resolution. Even if I had the resources, I'm not sure I'd get a RED, but I'm pretty sure I'd get an Alexa or F3 or maybe even the Canon C300.

Right now I'm pretty happy with the FS100, we're just scratching the surface of what I see as a 'mini-mini' Alexa.

Seriously don't worry about it. Go make a film.

Sounds like your talking to some camera snobs... nothing new here think of all the hours of film sitting in storage somewhere for student and indie movies, that never made it to a real theatre. They said the same thing as these particular scarlet users are saying. Btw, the haters are in a minority of even the scarlet users, besides there are many other reasons to get a scarlet over a fs100 even if it is just for the "small screen".

Thank u for ur opinions some of the ppl that I have talked are red because at first I was considering Scarlet but felt my needs and cost where better suited with the beatiful fs100 and as soon as they knew that I was attacked with messages of qoute "nobody is gonna take u seriously with that camera" and "1080p is dead" and so on . I was very disturbed thats all, if 4k is coming and gonna take over than why pay so much now, why not wait till a better 4k cheaper raw format is available! But don't diminish my work because of the camera I choose to shoot with, and don't lie to me and say just because u have a scarlet u are gonna hit the big screen...

the thread title you chose and your initial post make you sound bitter that you don't own a scarlet - even if this is not the case

No, and as such I have edited my post to reflect my situation more clearly and have posted a new one at the bottom to more clearly stae my hurt feelings of ppl who choose to judge you upon what camera u use why does a stigma have to come along with what camera u use? It's like these ppl are pre judging me on the camera and not the work.....

Your camera is great. Sounds like you're smart in purchasing the gear you need, not necessarily the gear you want. If you have paying gigs that need the RED, Alexa, or whatever camera, then you buy that camera then. But until then, make the best of what you have, because it's much more than many could ever dream to have.

Yeah, 4k is coming. so is 8k and whatever resolution beyond that. Your 1080p will be fine and relevant for years to come. Forget about 4k, forget about what people are saying that you need to "futureproof" your camera. By the time 4k is really relevant, they'll be a whole new slew of 4k cameras out that do far more, more efficiently, with better features. for less money. Go make money now with what you have. What you've got is nothing to be ashamed about. If all your friends care about is the camera you have, you've got the wrong friends. (Same thing if they care about the car you drive). Worry about yourself, your abilities and go kick some @$$!

To tell you the truth, it would be beneficial to have a thicker skin. Trash talking between different brand camera owner happens all the time. You don't need to get your feeling hurt over it.

Scarlet is clearly a superior camera, period. However, it doesn't mean it's a better camera for you. I have put in an order for Scarlet but I'll also be keeping my FS100. In fact FS100 has a few advantages over Scarlet (low light, 1080/60p, media/battery requirement).

I just finished an industrial job shooting an ex1r for the main stuff and I used a gopro hero 2 mounted ON TOP of the EX for about half the shots, plus a handful of POV shots. After the first edit, the client said he wanted all the gopro stuff and only the EX shots for the beginning of the interview segments. So here we have a 300-dollar consumer camera that carried the weight of 80% of the visuals. I got paid handsomely.

Regarding Red, I understand the OP's angst. I hate to paint a broad brush, but the online Red user community is populated with more than a few technophile koolaid-drinking snobs. It's a cultural thing. Check it out for yourselves. READ the posts. Post something skeptical, like, "I'm starting to have buyer's remorse because in the lag time between my December Scarlet order and the 4 jobs I've since completed renting an F3, I'm starting to re-evaluate my choice of purchase." I doubt you'll get a wrist-slapping for posting that. You'll probably just get banned outright. Those guys are such a fanboy, brand-loyal clique that it's almost kind of creepy.

The reduser forum doesn't LOOK like a normal "forum" because in reality it is an ingrown gadget-worship club. Other than that, great bunch of guys.

Exactly, I had an order on a Scarlett, but after thinking about it, it was definitely not the camera for me, battery was the biggest problem.

Creative people always dream big. Anybody with any sort of ambition wants their movies to get into Sundance and shown on a big 4K screen (with a true 4K DCP). It's how we're wired. It's why most of us are doing this. The reality is quite different, but the mundane isn't what motivates us. I love the starry-eyed directors. The first timers. The innocent. I'm in awe of them. Their energy is amazing. They want the very best, but often have the least.

People who bash cameras are pretty useless in the real world! If they have nothing better than to do it on a set, they should be put on driving errands. But you can show them up by showing them what you can do with an FS100 - or a RED - or a 5D - or an Alexa - or an Arri SB.
