As this GH5 Firmware Up-Grade is scheduled for release in a few days, what do we need to know about SD Cards that will support it and Edit Systems that are comfortable working with it?

The CRFTSHO YouTube guys who have been shooting with the beta version of the GH5 2.0 firmware for the past month have stated that only SDXC V90 cards worked with the 400 Mbps recording formats, but it's possible that things may change with the finished firmware. I plan on buying some SanDisk SDXC V90 cards to shoot at 400 Mbps. ( assuming that SanDisk cards are released in the next few weeks )

We don't know how the formats could change in the future or what the GH6 may have down the road and it makes sense to get the v90 now and not worry about it later. Is the price difference between v60 and v90 really worth the risk?

One thing I found a bit annoying was that after making my first GH5 tests with 10bit files Quicktime in my Quad Core MackBook Pro wouldn’t play them back. Hopefully All Intra 422 10 bit will solve that problem.

That has held me off from adding the GH5 to my kit. Also hope this is solves the playback.

It's a software issue. I had the same problem with MAGIX Vegas Pro 14 on Windows, where I had to use the free Sony Catalyst Browser app ( available for Macs too ) to transcode my GH5 10-bit footage to Sony XAVC ALL-I which worked just fine with Vegas Pro 14. The new Vegas Pro 15 added GH5 10-bit compatibility so I can now work with the native 10-bit files directly. So until Apple adds GH5 10-bit compatibility, I think you are going to have to transcode your footage.

LOL, the problem is not with the GH5, it's the MacBook that fails to play back the files.

Actually it's not the MacBook. QuickTime doesn't support 10-bit files. Perhaps the High Sierra release will address this, but if not Apple really needs to get it's act together.

For anyone working on a Mac and FCP X with 10-bit footage, preview is available via VLC, albeit not necessarily with accurate color rendition, but transcoding to ProRes within FCP X and then outputting H264 solves any issue.

As far as I'm concerned, the extra effort is well worth it.

Although I’m pleased that Panasonic is giving us an All Intra 422 10bit 4K option @ 400MB/s I cant help but wonder why they didn’t go with Pro Res. The Apple ProRes format comes in five versions: Apple ProRes 4444, Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), Apple ProRes 422, Apple ProRes 422 (LT), and Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy). Perhaps there’s a good explanation for this?

Does not matter if it is GH5 or Mac, it is a tool that adds time and I do not think it is worth it at this time. If I come back from a shoot with 800-900 clips, I do not want to spend additional time transcoding. Maybe you do, but time is money in my business.

ProRes is an Apple format and would require Apple to first agree to license and then at what cost to Panasonic.

If Black Magic could afford it I'm sure Panasonic could or maybe it’s because they want to sell over priced Panasonic Micro P2 Cards. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...api=3679,bing,81707472409450,4585307085379096

The GH5 uses SD cards if you hadn't noticed. The ProRes codecs require fast cards too and then one is into CF or SSD to record for the higher data rates. Neither of those options are that low a cost either https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...fsp_064g_a46d_extremepro_cfast_64gb_515r.html. If you also read my post again I said that Apple have to agree to license. I am sure Panasonic would agree to pay a reasonable fee.

If you don't want to have GH5 or a Mac or both, that's fine. Nobody is twisting your arm. If on the other hand you want the benefits of the GH5 10-bit image quality or the Mac work environment, preview can be done with VLC, and transcoding can be done while you start editing. Surely you wouldn't want to use all 900 clips, so this is a great way to filter out unwanted footage and take care of media management. There is no time penalty.

But I'm not here to convince you, just want to make sure people aren't misled by FUD.

This is not meant to be a reply, it's a question.........Will the new GH5 in camera 4K 10bit All-Intra 400Mbps recordings be as good as 4K 10bit Pro Res HQ recordings made from the same GH5 on a PIX-E5 or other top of the line off camera recorder?

It is my understanding that that internal recording from the GH5 quality is just as good as recording external. Where you will benefit with external recording is the easability with regard to editing.

The things that hold most camera manufactures back from being able to deliver the best images they can are limitations imposed by actually recording in the camera.

Personally I doubt that in camera recording will equal or surpass recordings made to a separate recorder………..If your buying a new camera and want to get the best possible images, it probably makes sense to also buy one the best separate recorders. It will add years to your cameras ability to compete from an image quality point of view, not to mention having an edit friendly format to work with.

It should be, otherwise what's the point of this upgrade?
