AJA introduces Cion 4K camera $8,995!

At least with raw footage you can certainly place scene values and color anywhere you want them within a very broad range, including color and value gamut ranges that REC709 HD and sRGB video can't reproduce. I like what I've seen of the Cion so far. Like the general size and form factor too.

I want to like it, but I have three reservations: proprietary storage media, no built-in ND filters, and (most importantly) a problematic sensor.

12 vs. 14 stops is a big difference.
Yup, that's part of what I meant by "problematic sensor." Mediocre low-light performance and fixed-pattern noise are other issues plaguing the CMV12000. Reports on the BMPC 4K seem to indicate that usable ISO tops out at around 800 and that the FPN, though significantly reduced by firmware 1.9.3, hasn't been entirely eliminated.

That looks fantastic. Just freakin' smokin'. It's like an F55 with a heart. I'm glad to see some more video coming out. It's rich and crisp and the skin tones are flattering, honest and very smooth. It's pretty amazing for right out of the camera. I just spent a day wrangling RAW from a Scarlet. It's like shooting with your eyes closed. Push it to the right, hold your nose and jump! I have no idea what they'll do with in in post. I can only hope they'll treat it well. I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to shoot ProRes 4444 like this. I'm also looking forward to this workflow. Keep it comin'

I'm getting curious about the internal settings and how you deploy them... 'skin tone' huh? Something's working. This looks great to me.

You think that has heart? It look like they just crank saturation, sharpness and crushed blacks. For me looks almost like DSLR footage. Higher quality but same look. I think F55 can do better. This first AJA footage look very videoish.

That's pretty much exactly what I thought too. Everyone has their own opinions and requirements though of course.

I do. Look at her skin in the final shot. It's quite smooth and still has the layered look of skin with the right amount of rose. It looks like this footage has less strident edge detail than what I often see on F55 footage. The F55 is a phenomenal piece of engineering. I attended the DIT seminar at Sony and I realize how deep that camera is. I like the look of the F55. I find this aesthetic, closer to an F55 than say a RED, appealing. Many do not.

I also find the skin detail to be softer on this than un-diffused F55. I agree on the crushing of the blacks and the saturation. It ain't flat. I would like to see how it would look if you lifted it a little and pulled down the highlights. In any case it's right out of the camera. We will see how you can push it around soon. It's ProRes 444 so it should prove pretty elastic.

It looks to me like film looked in the 90s - high contrast, no orange and teal wash out.
