AG-HMC40 Pricing Announced

With all the professional features and capability available to HPX300, it is still a crippled product for the most demanding folks due to the CMOS rolling shutter. Anyway, if Panasonic does provide an update to solve the flash banding, HMC40 is going to be a hit, if it also has similar low-light sensivity as the HMC150.

It all depends on what you plan on using it for. I would be very hesitant to use it for news/ENG work because of the small chips and low light, some types of sports because of the rolling shutter (though David is having success with it), or wedding/event work because of the size. The HPX500 would be far better suited for the first two, and the HMC40 the latter. But if my bread and butter was doc work, music videos, low budget films, or commercials, I would much rather take an HPX300 over a 500 or 40, simply because of the full raster chips + AVC-Intra. The idea of sticking a relay adapter and an SGBlade on one makes me feel all warm and fuzzy... :love4:

They're all tools, it just depends on what you need to use the tool for. I would assume most folks buying an HPX300 would be buying it for reasons that the others aren't as well suited for.

I do think you're going to be right though... The HMC40 is probably going to be a huge hit, simply because it'll make a nice compliment/2nd cam to the HMC150
for wedding/event work and the like (assuming the low light abilities are at least half-way decent).

Panasonic just informed us that these are now set to ship end of this month (August). I hope to receive our first 10 first week of Sept (and I also hope they don't change this eta again)

Well, DV Expo is coming up September 22 - 24 (Exhibits 23 - 24). I plan on bring an 8GB SDHC card with me and recording some video from the HMC-40. (Assuming the Panasonic is willing to let me do that.)

It should be fun to play with both cameras side by side.

Amazon's ETA is September 1st.

I shot a couple of lame shots with the HMC40 at NAB. Looked good to me.

I drove 200 miles last year to the DV Expo in L.A. to test the camera to see if I wanted to buy it and they wouldn't let me do that at the Panny booth. Why? I don't know, but that was really lame....of course I do love my 150 :-)

Sorry to hear that, last year I walked over to EVS (Express Video Supply) and tried out their HMC-150. (There were less people hovering around the camera.)

This year, I'll try to slip am 8GB card into the HMC-40, but who knows if I'll ge to do it or not....

We just received our first order, and have 8 left available from that order. Please email me if interested.

2 more left as of 5 pm cst. Anxious to see what people think once these start getting some real-world use.

Just received one from Shawn at Full Compass. Looking forward to running tests and doing some shooting with it tomorrow!

Does anyone know the approximate release dates for Panasonic devices? B&H doesn't have this camera yet. Also, people have said there will likely be an upgrade for the HMC150 forthcoming. Is this something to wait for? The HMC150 was released in 2008, and we're in late 2009. Does Panasonic release new cameras about once a year or is it worse?

There is no set schedule for when something gets released. The HVX200 was basically unmodified for three years before it became the HVX200A. The HMC150 could change tomorrow, or it could stay as-is for a couple of years. Nobody knows.
