AG-DVX200 4K Large-Sensor Handheld Camcorder

Only if you believe that any publicity is good publicity.

Look this thread, and our community, is divided among two groups. One says I want an interchangeable lens MFT camera, and another that says I don't want interchangeable lenses. The more people scream about the lack of interchangeable lenses the more they will make "don't want interchangeable lens, i need a fixed lens ENG camera" community members aware that an alternative exists.

It's really not divided.

The ILC folks don't mind that the ENG fellas got something new to play with. The ENG folks, for the most part, feel some empathy for the ILC fellas. No one is casting any aspersions against the camera itself.

The sole gripe - which is legitimate, in my eyes - is that it appears that Panasonic will not be releasing a similarly specc'ed camera with an MFT IL, thus putting in doubt its intentions in this segment for those with a slew of the MFT lenses. And, if so, the IFC folks have to begin looking elsewhere.

PS. And it's not that MFT is going away, it's that a $5,000 camera may have to include a larger (namely s35) sensor to remain competitive with the rest of the market. That is something that Panasonic isn't exactly going to announce a year or two beforehand, even if it were true (and it may or may not be but there's been tremors on the webs that, with the small sensor cameras being replaced by smartphones, MFT and APC-S become the entry level product and s35, FF and MF is where the Big Boys are moving to seek fatter profit margins).

Well..folks were comparing to GH4, new Canon fixed lens etc. Seen some pretty favorable footage of GH4 vs FX1000...and some are getting good results with it and Shogun etc. So..absurd perhaps..but it wil lbe interesting to see..as I said..comparison of finished footage between them. But hey..carry on.

Even comparing the DVX200 to the GH4, based on price, is out of line.

You can look at the price for a GH4 body only, but you need to spend a lot more than that to get from the body to a comparable machine. You need a lens, you need a YAGH, and you're still not fully there.

The $5K MSRP will not be the street price. It'll probably be more like $3800, if you follow prior releases.

B&H lists the GH4 body only for $1497. They list the YAGH for $1997. They list the Lumix 14-140 for $549. That's over $4000 just to get a sorta-comparable cam to the DVX200, and that's without any extra lenses, and that's still giving up some of the DVX200 features.

True, they do run bundle deals now and then; you can currently get the body and the YAGH together for $2200, but that's not always. In any case, the "massive" price gap disappears.

Interesting. For an instant, I thought you were a grand off. $2,200 for both is a decent deal. Even if the combo price bounces back up a little, it must be reflective of the DVX200 introduction. (add Shogun and it'll be around $4,000 for everything, which may be another clue for the DVX200 street price).

And, if GH5 comes out in 2016 with markedly improved specs ...

LOL and we are back several years now. 5K (US) to produce. But there is chaos in the marketing departments now . After the D90 they didn't know what to do (the 5-7K offers -by then- went out of the window because they were just horrible compared to the D90). And if you ask me then yes they did overdue with the restriction of IQ. Too much, come on guys... too much. I understand that their real target was the broadcast industry (the only ones besides us who buy cameras) but come on.. too much is too much! OK what's missing now to a GH4 ? a real servo zoom in 1 lens . and that's the only reason why it can't be taken seriously for the paid jobs beside the movies and advertising (but they don't buy cameras.. they rent them LOL) . 5D? no 4K and 29minutes and that's it. Works for the marketing departments. Anyway NOW there is chaos abut the prices. they literally don't know how to price. Even BM will try to sell at that 5K thing. What the heck... welcome, take advantage of the pricing chaos. 5K is good money for them. It has been good money for all of them until yesterday. And good luck to Sony desperately trying to lock the customers with new "proprietary containers" that either don't work or work only with their (future) stuff. Marketing and software restrictions now? That's how they see it at Sony's. Us? hmmm we had a good fun with the DSLR little cheap and beautiful things: but it's not gonna happen (one by one there are ALWAYS things missing LOL). we're back to the 5K thing. See? Sony were a little too greedy with the fs7. This Panny here will establish the level (of money) for the segment. As it was before, no?

P.S. I sincerely wish the best to the BM guys.. but remember that movies will work with rented arris ... you wanna try the trust fund babies having fun with the "movie" machine? go ahead... good luck. 5K a piece is good money, absolutely.

Have something against Sony do we? Most people I know don't think
Sony is charging too much for the FS7. This DVX200 may be cheaper
than the FS7 but has nowhere near the same features....there is a reason
it is cheaper. That's like saying the DVX200 is an example of Panasonic
being greedy because it costs more than a Canon 70D. Different cameras
cost different amounts.

I really like what this new DVX appears to be. I'll probably get one.
that said....the FS7 is one damn fine camera.

well Sony is the teacher in that regard, but now we should really leave it to the marketing people (they do need help right now, but we should concentrate on our stuff, it's their job, not ours)
why they need help?

2 slaps they had to face (in the face)

1 (first slap, still hurts): The Nikon D90 .. in a day all they sold to us became absolute garbage (in 1 night)

2 (second slap, now getting comical) the iphone (BIG sensor and BIG lens)

let's don't talk about the 4K cell phones (let's have mercy)

though to sell after that stuff up there. So lemme put it this way : can we agree that HD and UHD is NOT that difficult now? since.. ya know... the galaxy note ..

When comparing GH4 to DVX200 (which I wasn't exactly doing), the YAGH is not necessarily..err..necessary. If you are talking about XLR in, there are far less expensive ways to do that without triggering the expense, powering/mounting issues of the YAGH addition.

What do you have in mind, to get internal recording from XLR inputs?

or
Tascam DR60

I've used the GH4 by itself vs within a YAGH/Anton bauer rig. The YAGH just makes the support situation ridiculous and expensive for very little benefit. Designing the YAGH to require its own unprovided power source was a big mistake to my mind. And it adds a complex mult-pin connector that doesn't bode well for field removal when you don't need all that. Just needless for the most part, given the alternatives. Very curious how many they've sold...and how many wound up unused.

Yeah, but then you're talking about kludgy, cable-connected pains in the butt that you drag along WITH the camera rather than being PART of the camera. If you want to be comparable to the DVX200, it needs to be as close to all-in-one unit as possible.

It's just not a comparable solution.

Less kludgier than the YAGH scenario. And you don't have to use it when shooting b-roll. Whatever. You have to weigh all the pros and cons together..it's not clear cut...especially when comparing to a camera that doesn't exist yet ;)
