AG-DVX200 4K Large-Sensor Handheld Camcorder

I didn't see if anyone posted this. B&H has a preorder up for the cam at a price of $4695.

Nothing on the B&H webpages for this camera on what CODECs are supported. You'd think Panasonic would know by now what they have in production. Maybe they haven't told B&H? Makes me worry, this does.

Here's hoping they learned from the AJ-PX270 debacle and this time will ship a completed camera. We'll see. But after what they did to their customers with the PX270, I'm sure as heck not going to pre-order anything.

Panasonic has already published complete specifications on exactly what all the recording formats are (and yes, they are all present in the camera right now, and all were present even in the version 0.29 firmware).

B&H is an independent entity and they can put anything they want on their website, and they can choose to omit anything they want too, but B&H is not the manufacturer and should not be relied on as the final word of manufacturer's specifications. If B&H left something out, you can't blame the manufacturer for that.

Have in mind that the good looking stuff from the GH4 ist mostly shot with Cinelike-D, while the footage of the DVX200 seems to be straight out of the camera, without any grading.
When I watched the "Fireman" video, I noticed that outdoors were full overexposed, pretty obvious they didn't use V-log, but I wonder if this setting it's the only way that doesn't overexpose the camera.

Barry wrote, that without V-Log you loose more or less one stop of DR. The firemen-video looks quite like it has 11 stops of DR. But this is all still speculation, as nobody yet, AFAIK, has squeezed the max of DR out of the camera.

Barry, can you already tell us something about the characteristics of the lens aperture?

I've been waiting to get my hands on a PL sample before commenting on that. I know that there are changes in the lens between what I've got, and what will be the final produced version. I don't know whether the aperture characteristics will change or not, so I haven't said anything about it yet. It probably won't change, but I'd like to know for sure before saying.

You can overexpose any camera. There are limits on all cameras. The DVX200 has 12 stops of dynamic range; VLOG-L preserves the most range the camera can deliver but requires the most post-processing to make the footage look good. There are other gammas in the camera that require less post-processing, but they don't retain quite as much dynamic range. HD NORM holds about 10 stops, FILMLIKE-3 holds about 11 stops. VLOG-L holds 12.

But even in VLOG-L, you can get overexposed footage. Put the camera on ISO 3200, turn off the ND filters, and shoot in VLOG-L, and you'll come back with nothing but pure white footage. You still have to watch your exposure carefully even when using VLOG-L to keep anything from blowing out and becoming lost detail; that's the same with any camera (but less of a concern the more dynamic range the camera holds).

We have a call into our rep regarding prices.....that price may be just list price, not the MAP price....and according to our rep, there has been no marketing bulletin issued on the camera as of this morning. That bulletin will tell us all the pricing info we need as a dealer....and we'll post the info as soon as we get it.

Agreed. But knowing B&H they're not into huge profit margins and at times they are so close to cost they only care about the sales margins. This is why they're so popular globally. Blues Brothers style :P

The price sounds about right. Perhaps some other dealers on Amazon will for sure match or go lower as usual. At any rate I respect the price. I still think it should've came with the AVC-Intra 10bit 4:2:2

Judge not this camera by this footage. Seriously...

Someone has a lot to still learn about exposure. DVX is NOT at fault here!

Most all of the camera manufacturers have locked down B & H with MAP pricing....meaning in most cases you will pay the same price from B & H as you do from me. It has been that way for the last couple of years....

There are exposure issues all over the place in that footage, but it's good to see the camera used handheld in a true "run'n'gun" situation, using the zoom, in a way that's similar to a lot of the work that I do. The shot of the water rushing by the side of the boat at 2:37 looks pretty bad, but that may be the Vimeo compression as much as what's coming out of the camera.

Only problem: I don't think I can afford the camera anymore, because now I want a boat like that to play with!
