Afghan Indie Rig

I put this rig together just before I left for Afghanistan a few months ago. I put alot of thought into this (being the second rig I've put together from scratch) and I'm quite proud of it. Not pictured are a Canon FD 24mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.2 that are fantastic low light lenses I use with an adapter made by RJ Camera. The only missing element is a wide angle low light lens- none are affordable at this point.
This image quality produced is decent for what I'm trying to do. I've taken some measures to reduce the destructive potential of the Afghan moon dust that covers everything. First, to black gaff tape everything possible. This also helps with little bangs and nicks that are inevitable when you're riding in a steel beast like the RG-31 over the unforgiving Afghan terrain. Next, after each mission I air dust as well as use a makeup brush to physically dust off the equipment. I can't say that this is fool proof, but hopefully it'll prolong the lifespan. I hope you enjoy the pictures and be sure to check out the website I built for the deployment. www.thehoundawgpost.com

wow! what a rig! I went to your website, where can I find the video you have been taking? safe journey.

There is a Vimeo link on the right is where I host videos made in house. (The video category in the drop down menu is full of relevant linked videos I find as news stories) HOWEVER, having just gotten my gear from transport I've only just now gone outside the wire. In the next several weeks I will be putting out videos more frequently. Thanks for checking it out!

Neat rig. So you get to spec your own gear? I'm curious how much of a PITA it is dealing with those earbuds under your MICH, seems like it would be annoying... I wonder if it would be possible (or permissible) to rig audio into a more standard comms setup like Comtacs or something.

The ear buds work great. They're easy to get up in there around the ACH harness. None of it is gov't spec- its all personally owned gear. Unfortunately, after 6 months of trying to get the new kit I gave up and bought my own stuff. Fortunately, I'm in the business on the civilian side so I'll be using it for years to come- specially the hardware stuff (not GH1 for long). I have no experience with Comtacs so I couldn't tell you if it'd be easier. I can say that once I got the kinks worked out with the H4n I really like it. This is the way field audio recording should be.
