finally. i have never had a client ask me to shoot a chart. only a job. and so far, all indications are we have a winner.

I agree with you on the client side. I also like the image a lot. However, both my opinion and the client's opinion are quite subjective. I also understand that charts do not make a camera.

The only point is that something should not be published, such as 800 TVL, without it being true. I am not saying that it is untrue. I don't shoot charts. I would just like to find out why there are some people who disagree with Panasonic on this issue.

Let's see, Japan is facing:

Tens of thousands of dead people.
Entire towns literally washed away.
People starving and having no water.
After shocks.
The threat of more tsunamis.
Rolling black outs.
Nuclear reactors melting down.

Japan is trying to get a hold of the differences between millisieverts and microsieverts of radiation. In light of all this, I think demanding an explanation of 800 TV lines is macabre. Seriously, there is a time and a place for everything.

The disaster is most certainly an awful situation. I keep checking the news. I hope that the nuclear plants don't keep getting worse. An earthquake and tsunami are terrible enough.

I will not be buying an AF101 based on the BBC report in the same way I did not buy any HPX371's as I felt that panasonic were also not telling me the full story about it's new sensor and spec!

I've had my AF since the first week of January. Every client that I have shot video for with the AF loves the the material. So Far: green screen for an ad agency, a third camera on a shoot with 2 varicam 3700's, a 30 minute short film, political commercial, public health campaign spot.... among others. Its March and I've made back my initial investment and haven't shot 1 zone plate yet. I realize that this post won't make pixel pickers any happier, I'm just saying that my clients are digging the images from the AF.

It seems that those working the camera and making money with it are the happy ones, and the clients are too, and those who haven't even bought it and read reports of zone plates, etc. are the disappointed ones. Sort of a disconnect.

Closing why?
DVI is run by a moderator I would like to have as a neigbour, just to say "hello" to him every day.
By the way, do you own a AF100 or not?

I did read your post...sorry I used the word expert instead of professional. The statements "lost puppy in the corner" , "being beaten by DLSRs", "ugliest noise I have ever seen" "footage was very disappointing" do not sound like those of someone who's happy with the product..... So O.K.
I do agree some of the complaints get met with disdain, but that was not my point. I just don't understand why anyone would keep a product that hasn't met their expectations, and then go on and continue to be upset about it. It's in no way productive or rational IMO....but to each his own I guess.

Then again you should work on your reading skills. I wrote in this thread that I will either just sell it and take the whole thing as a lesson, or I will wait for a solution. I don't mind having the camera in the corner as a lost puppy just as long as it doesn't pee and poo all over the place... it isn't in the way. As for your attempts to understand the me.... don't bother, I don't even want to understand the you. I thought this forum was about Panasonic camera's and not about the people who use them.

Well said, Gary!

Well said, Gary!

Well DVI have now closed the AF100 section altogether and it now links to this site.

No I don't own the camera but I do own and hire a lot of panasonic kit inc two HPX301's and we hire in HPX2700 and 3700 camera's, I also have a RED ONE M-X camera available.
As I said in my previous post I respect Alan's reports on all camera's and make purchase judgements based on those reports not discussion's on how great the camera is or looks on an internet forum, I did have a look at it during BVE but it is not the camera for me at the moment as it falls way short of my own technical benchmarks for HD shooting, I also do not own any DSLR's for video shooting.

All sharpening algorithms are not created equal, period. I own an AF100 and I shoot with the detail NEVER above -5 on both settings. EVER. I do not like what the sharpening algorithm does to the image, ESPECIALLY in the noise. It is NOT like other cameras I have used and does in fact add some strange effects that I do not like. I've shot charts from +7 to -7 detail so that I could observe the changes that the detail algorithm was having on the image. So I absolutely agree that shooting at detail 0 is DEFINITELY never going to represent a test of using the camera where I'd use it. EVER.

From day one of owning the camera I've said that the default scene from Panasonic just does not do this camera justice. I think they should have used a detail range of 0 to 14 instead because 0 to me represents way too much. Most people's settings I have seen used also pull the detail down for the most part for those who have shared their scene files. The only reason I use -5 instead of -7 is that I want a tiny bit of the noise to be sharpened to help reduce the banding effect, and it does a really good job to me. It allows the image to be more dithered in those areas which is what other cameras look like when you look closely at gradients, who have the same bit depth.

This statement sums up everything about this forum that has gone downhill in the past 24 months.

DVXuser. It's always been about the people.

Bless you, William Robinette.

DVXUser is about sharing information to help users get the best from their chosen products. It is not a forum for bitching, whining, complaing, demanding lawsuits, or other horsecrap. It is about users who make video or film for a living, whether that is in the field of narrative filmmaking, or commercials and drama, or weddings and events. It is about the people who use the products, which is why we spend so much time organizing and pushing DVXFests, to get people out there SHOOTING instead of COMPLAINING. It is why we organize these festivals and charge no entry fee, and give away thousands and tens of thousands of dollars of prizes. It is why guys like David and I produce lighting, sound recording, and camera operation tutorials. It is why we have scriptfests and CGIfests. It is why I personally have bankrolled feature films for three of our members so far, and have extended offers to two others and am preparing to extend an offer to yet another, because these are folks who are going somewhere and we do what we can to assist them.

The forum that William Robinette refers to was great, truly great, back when the DVX was the only camera discussed, because nobody had anything to fight about and they instead got down to the work. We had 90 entries in ZombieFest, because back then, people were FILMMAKERS instead of camera-fighters.

Today, we have probably 10x as many members, there are dozens and dozens of suitable cameras to choose from, and Marlon Ladd is making an awesome feature-length film on a T2i, a product that can be bought for $599 brand new. And yet the participation of actual filmmaking is at an all-time low. We had 18 entrants in FictionFest. We took off the shackles, didn't even have anyone conform to any specific genre, and with 10x as many members, we got 1/5 as much participation. But oh boy, we've got a whole bunch of folks who are in here bitching about a hundred lines of resolution -- even though I've shown a chart that clearly shows a valid 800 TVL.

The bitching has gotten so bad that Chris Hurd of DVInfo apparently (and without any knowledge on our part) just closed down his whole AF100 forum and kicked everyone over here, because he's tired of it.

Well, guess what, so are we.

Who does this complaining serve? Who does this help? Nobody. It's not what we're about, and we don't want it here either.

If you're here to complain, get the hell out. Period. This place is for people who want to USE the products, either in their current business or who are aspiring to get into the business.

Okay, you asked for it, you got it.

And anybody who protests -- please, just go away. We don't want whiners. We want those who are here to actively seek knowledge, or share knowledge. Anything else is just noise.
