AF100 Viewfinder plus HPG20 question.

I've heard some mixed reviews of the EVF on the AF100,

A colleague of mine said that he really missed the zoom in focus assist function that was present on 171/200.

Do we know if this is going to be present on the final production camera or not?

also do you think it would be possible to use a 3rd party EVF from say redrock or Zacuto using the HDMI out?

final question - the HPG20 - could you use the mounting bracket to mount it to the back of the camera? or would this make the camera tricky to use handheld?

to your first question, the answer is no. Jan has made it very clear that he engineers will not be adding this to the camera, and yeah, that stirred up some emotion. We have a focus aid bar, i believe there is peaking, and if you have an external monitor there is always the 1:1 crop. Shouldn't be an issue. Just requires a little different workflow that I know everyone will learn how to adapt to.

don't know about your second question though.

1. The version we had did not have it. The focusing tools it did have worked very well though, and when all else fails there's the tape hook ;)

2. the Redrock should work, HDMI, and HDSDI are live at all times.

3. IMHO, so long as you have a good baseplate with rods, you should be able to mount most anything you need to the camera. Don't forget, the top handle is riddled with holes to attach all sorts of stuff.

Hope that helps.

The focus in red is awesome. It's like "Super Red Peaking".

Yes of course you can attach any monitoring device you wish to the HDMI out (and HD-SDI out, and Composite [SD] out).

Weight distribution depends a huge amount on the lenses you use. All the connectors are at the back of the camera (except the XLRs which are at the far back on the right side). But with a little gap, it shoudl be able to balance really well with a recorder on the back. Or in place of the grip. Or on top.

I've seen an AF 100 in person and I own an HPG 20. Believe me you won't want to be mounting the HPG to the AF...

Easy for me to say but just because I think its the wrong idea won't stop people from doing it . Take a look at some of the Kludgey DSLR setups ...

Shame about mounting the HPG20 to the AF100 - was hoping this would be possible as I need to record to p2 and also need a firewire out for doing lives using streambox / bgan.

would a 3rd party evf be a good option or not really worth it considering the peaking sounds pretty good with the AF100.

I'm looking at using this camera pretty much just for news - at the moment am using Panasonic AJ-HPX2100 (shooting DVCPROHD) All our feed / ingest points are geared around p2 so would be very handy to have this option.

apart from lack of zoom rocker / servo - are there any other issues you guys would see for using this camera for news?

I'd would like to do all my shooting on AF100 and 5D mk2, I guess the first purchase for news would be the lumix 14-140, i own a few L series canon lenses as well - and would have to get the 7-14mm f4.

any advice on this would be great!

There's no reason why you couldn't use the HPG20 with the AF100. If you were shooting news with the AF100 (Just curious: Why?), you'd probably want a shoulder mount. That would be a natural place to to mount a HPG20.

You can certainly use the HPG20 with the AF100, but you're not going to mount it on the AF100. It's more a case of you'd be mounting the AF100 onto the HPG20! The HPG20 is bigger than the camera is. It's not just a little recorder, it's a whole playback deck/monitoring/offloading station. It's more of a half rackmount type of unit. If you want a portable recorder, the HPG20 is a great choice, of course, but -- if you want a portable recorder to mount on the AF100, then the Nano is a total featherweight that can easily sit on top of the AF100's handle with a little shoe mount or 1/4-20 to 1/4-20 mount.

I think it would be great for news, sure an ENG camera would have it's benefits but I travel alot. I'm tired of lugging round the 2100, I think as a craft camera the af100 would be great and I'm therefore will to compromise on not having a fast big range zoom for portability and shallow dof.

I think I can get away the af100 with a 14-140 for run and gun / breaking news
