AF100 owners, what do you think?

I was a machinist/engineer/welder for just over 10 years before I entered the film world. I have plans for what I think is an awesome accessory for the AF100. I originally started designing this way before I received my AF100 and it's been through many revisions. I'm about to make the prototype. Honestly I don't necessarily need to make a lot of money from it, I just want to solve some problems that either others haven't or at least haven't in one unit. I no longer have access to a CNC machine or a TIG welder so I will have to pay someone to do this, or at least rent time on them. This is where most of my cost will go.

This product will do several things that I want and I believe most AF100 owners want. First it will mount under the hand grip on the right side of the camera, much like olof's design for his Nanoflash mount. It will also mount at both the front and rear mic holder mounting points towards the top of the camera. It will have a way to mount a short 15mm rod at a 12.5 degree angle down and a 12.5 degree angle away from the lens at the bottom right corner of the hand grip. This will allow one to mount a short handle off the right side for shoulder mounting the camera without a heavy rail system under the camera. This short handle will easily be able to come off when not needed. Next, it will have an integrated record button that can easily be accessed by your thumb when holding onto the top handle, and maybe a port so you could connect a second record button (for example if your added side handle had a record button). Next, it will have a way to mount another 15mm rod, this time facing the front. That way you can configure a mount with Zacuto or Redrock parts for the Cineroid or similar product off the left side of the camera. I choose facing front so you could adjust the EVF forward or backward depending on your rig. It will also have a mounting point for the nanoflash which will mount at roughly a 45 degree angle above the stock hand grip without interfering with the hand grip or top handle. I will also add 1/4 20 and 3/8 threaded holes where I can as well as maybe a cold shoe mount since I'll be stealing the AF100s mic mounts. Ideally it will be a nice compact design without much more added weight than the AF100 and Nanoflash by itself. I take the inspiration from older 16mm cameras for the design. I always liked the nice one hand on the handle/one hand on the lens, compact shoulder design of 16mm cameras over the huge heavy rigs that originated from the 35mm adapter days.

Ok the reason why I'm posting this now before I make the prototype is to get feedback from other AF100 owners. Thoughts? What would you be willing to pay for a product like this? Am I adding too much to it? Or is there anything you would add?

Forgive my photoshop skills but this is roughly where things will go.

Do you have some sort of image you could share for those of us who can't picture it from the description? Thanks!

Brian,

It's sound very interesting indeed. I'm very much a visual type so I'm wondering if sharing an image of the design would be possible. Also, there is a precision parts maker just five minutes up the road from me (Firearms manufacturer). Perhaps I can get you a number for them as I have seen their work and have toured the factory. They do make other components and it's all done inhouse.

I have several sketches on paper I've done by hand, but nothing in a file form. My scanner crashed on me a few months back and I haven't replaced it yet. I'll come up with a simple sketch in photoshop and post it soon.

Brian, dont waste time finding a machine shop. Use www.emachineshop.com. Im currently building a low cost (sub 1K) motion control head I want to open source as a kit for folks interested in doing moco. The pieces Ive received from emachineshop are awesome, and they can do everything from CNC lathe, milling, to plate bending etc. If you need any help DM me and Ill send you some of my thoughts and drawings.

I already have a machine shop, but thanks for that. I might just use there software just so people can see what I'm talking about. I'll make a super simple Photoshop image of existing photo's of the AF100, Nanoflash, and Cineroid just so people know theoretically where things will be placed.

Keep me posted on that mocap stuff, do you have a site or thread related to this I can follow?

Thanks

ya, I want to make sure that I can ACTUALLY build this thing before I start showing people parts and progress. I should have some updates soon.

Every man should have his own machine shop!

The software from e is super simple, and it will render a 3D image. If you send some dimensions or a sketch I could mock it up quickly in Max or E and post.

I guess I should clarify. I have a machine shop I'm in good with. I don't own it, but I have friends that do, and I can get the prototype done fairly cheap.

I think I may either not given enough time for feedback or have over estimated the need for this product. Since today and tomorrow I was scheduled to start the prototype I'll make it without feedback and post something when done to see if anyone might be interested in me making them one per order. As of right now I'm estimating the cost roughly between $300 and $400.
