AF100 Manual?

Thanks Jan.

The manual has listed in optional accessories the Panasonic AG-MC200G. In a mic thread it was thought that the MC200G would be "too hot" to use without a mic pad.

Thoughts?

It is too hot. People have been able to use it and they seem to be successful but I would not advise it, at least not without a 10dB pad. And no using a pad is not the same as just turning the anttenuator down. All systems are designed to have a certain frequency response and and a 1/4 throttle that Frequency response curve does not look like the frequency response curve that it is designed to have. If you run a mic that is too hot and you have a soft spoken actor/actress and you have to turn up the gain, and then something loud happens in the scene, that mic will end up in the distortion range, because it responds quickly. If you have a pad on it it will respond appropriately to the input level expected by the second half of the system. You can have this discussion all day long with video guys that have used mics that are too hot for their systems and they will sure it will work, and then one day they will finally figure out what their microphone really sounds like.

Imagine trying to judge a stereo system at 1/4 volume. You don't hear the nuances of the speakers, you may not hear the some of the high frequencies or some of the mid range and the the lows will just be muddy. This is in essence what you are doing when operating a mic on an input at 1/4 volume on it input. Use a pad so that you can run the volume at a halfway point. If you talk to an audio guy, he will tell you the same thing I am.

I have been discussing this with the factory ever since I found out that the AG-MC200 was a -40dB mic. This was three weeks ago, up until then I thought it was a -50dB mic. So they are in the position of learning something new as they are approaching it from the same perspective as you, "isn't that what the volume control is for." The correct answer is no, that isn't what the volume control is for, it is not meant to control a microphone that is too hot, it is meant to get the best performance out of a mic so that your recording resides in that optimum space of -20 to 0. You should be able to run your mic in that range and not be afraid of something louder than your actor overloading the mic. The problem is that you can get your -40 mic in that rage with 1/4 turn on the volume control but if something unexpected happens which is louder than the actor, it will put that mic into distortion.

If you are going to use a -40dB or -36dB or anything more sensitive than -50 on a -50dB input, put a pad in between the mic and the input on the camera.

Best,

Jan

Thank you for being so on top of it.

Are there any plans for a -50dB mic from Panasonic? Have you used the MC200 with a mic pad? Does it all fit onto the camera? Mic pads are typically 4" long. Add that on the back of a mic and well... will it work?

>Look under Interval Rec.

Yes, but would expect some short step by step.

Jan: The website, 'YouSendIt' states the download limit has been exceeded for the first pdf, AG-AF100P(VQT3M18)_vol1_E.pdf. any chance you can extend the limit? I could only download Vol 2.
Thanks,
Scott

If Jan OK's it I can put these manuals up on my FTP site. My email is below.

But I will only do it if Jan says it is OK.

Then anyone can download manuals, no limit, unless Jan asks me to take them down at a certain date.

Thanks Jan
I very much appreciate your responsiveness to questions and help with this camera.
Giving access to the manual is fantastic.
Thanks

I took the liberty of posting them - should the YouSend It link get used up. The server might not be the quickest on the planet, but has unlimited bandwidth. I'll remove the manuals as soon as Panasonic puts them up for download through the official channel.

I've read them cover to cover once already. Thanks a million Jan for getting them into our hands.

Thanks Petros!
