AF100 internal codec vs Samurai

Hmm, just noticed that the PIX 240 has SDI record detection for Arri, Canon and Sony, but not Panasonic. Wonder why that is, and how the $1600 Samurai is doing things the $2800 PIX isn't? That's disappointing for the SD...

Thank you!!!!!!! I've tried several times to install it without success: I've renamed it and now it works!!!!

Thank you again and Happy New Year

Gary

Apologies. Renaming the file to ATOMSAM.FW is the correct solution. The website is being updated as I type.

Thanks,

I thought I was getting the Pix 240 to roll when I hit record on the AF as it was set up at Abel Cine.... But that was before I had a couple oaf weeks of vacation so my memory might not be accurate.

Perhaps by recognizing timecode? But apparently it doesn't yet recognize the SDI flag... sure hope I'm wrong, I'm basing it off of the firmware update features list here.

According to this page http://www.sounddevices.com/download/pix-firmware.htm it was added in 1.02.

1.02
  • New: added option "SDI Flag - Panasonic" to menu item "System->Rec Start/Stop" - for Panasonic cameras
Brilliant! Thanks Mike@AF, I hadn't seen that page, I had only seen the 1.03 firmware (which, as it turns out, isn't even the most recent, they're already on 1.05).

So now the question becomes -- is either of these units planning on supporting pixel-to-pixel at any point?

Hi Ivan, I've read some rumors that a firmware upgrade for Samurai with expanded focus assist will be available in the next months. Is this true?

Thanks

Gary

Could you verify that it uses the SDI start/stop record bit/flag and not the timecode run with the new firmware?

Yes, with 2.61 firmware you can use free run timecode and SDI start and stop: I've tried both on HDD and SSD and it works

Regards

Gary

What are your top 3 likes and dislikes about the unit. It seemed like there was a lot to like but I only saw it in the showroom and as I know things are always different in the field.I would buy one but I keep thinking Panasonic will have a grown up version of the AF with higher bit rate recording soon and thatis holding me back from jumping on the 240 presently.

Hi Gary,

There are plans to add more focus assist features. The exact feature set has not yet been decided but one of the them is expanded focus assist.

These are good news, I hope that plans will be actuated soon. Expanded focus assist could be very useful for AF100's owners, considering that the camera has not this feature onboard

Thank you

Hi Ivan

My hopes for the Atomos Samurai is VFR.

Through correspondence with Atomos...I have had indications (not promises) that this is being considered and even in the development pipeline.

Can you keep my dreams alive?

FWIW: I would pay whatever extra for the 'Super Samurai' to get VFR (100fps plus in 1080).

Meantime...I love my Samurai. Great work Atomos.

Hi Shooter,

Just to be clear on the terminology, VFR is Variable Frame Rate?

You would like the Samurai to convert over-/under-cranked video on the fly to the correct frame rate, e.g. camera is 60fps overcranked and the file recorded by the Samurai is 24fps. Net result is slow motion.

Or are you talking about changing the frame rate while shooting?

Any news on if we will get VFR on the Samurai?
Not sure what you're really asking for here. How would the Samurai be able to record variable frame rates? It can only record what it's given, and SDI doesn't really support variable frame rates. For example, it is impossible to get HD-SDI to handle more than 1080/30p. If you want 1080/60P, it cannot cannot cannot be transported on HD-SDI. You'd have to go to dual-link or 3GSDI to be able to get that. And the Samurai doesn't have those.

Barry,

I am wondering if I were to switch my AF100 to shoot 48FPS over 24FPS in the VFR setting... if the Samurai would record an over cranked clip.

No, because SDI doesn't support VFR as Barry stated.

However, as someone (I think Shooter) pointed out, if you record in-camera to the SD card, on playback within camera it triggers the Samurai so you can at least get slo-mo transcoded to ProRes like all your other clips.
