AF100 external recorder - Ninja 2 or Samurai?

I would say all external recorders that can record ProRes will most likely record up to HQ (220mbps). Of course the higher the better, but lets look at the source, Af100 which spits out 8 bit 4:2:0 and it's being recorded into 4:2:2 10bit space. This buys you some elbow room in color correction to push image around more with less degradation. If I was recording RED footage I would most likely go HQ level because you're begining with a much more detailed image with more fidelity. BTW, expect a little more grain (even noise) when recording off the SDI/HDMI because you are bypassing the AVCHD compression. Not a bad thing, its just a more honest representation of the image.

Hey bgundu and all, just an update, did some further tests with my af100 and samurai and starting to get even more concerned now! Panicking quite a lot! I've attached some videos to display some of the problems. First please ignore the shoddy footage in terms of exposure etc, was just a quick test.

I've noticed that there is a lot of "Shudder" with movement in the clips especially the first link, which does not come up on the sd cards. Another big problem is when ever the camera moves or pans the top of the frame seems to band or drag horribly! Any ideas? I'm using the mini sdi to main sdi cables that came with the samurai, so I don't understand how they may be the issue (they look fine). Is there any standard sdi cables anyone can recommend if so?

I'm using a Scorpio Black WD 750 gb drive (product code WD7500BPKT). I appreciate hard drives have moving parts and are not as sturdy as SSD's , but surely it should be able to take a bit of panning etc!? SSD's are expensive and while I may have to opt for a good Intel 250gb ssd for £150, that is no where near enough space for a feature when recording at high pro res.

Another potential thing is when editing in adobe cs5.5, i noticed I'm using the timeline project settings for AVCD HD, will that effect it as it's pro res? (As i can't see a pro res option). Would be interested to hear what Barry has to say too, as I'm about to have a nervous breakdown with filming a month away! (All the sd card footage looks fine with no issues).

Hey XSV, I'm finally looking into getting that Shuttle v2 now and was wondering if you ever got or found a solution to mounting it to the side of the af 100? I'm looking into getting some type of external battery for it to keep it going like the liliput one you recommended before but would like to avoid a rail system. Does anyone ever just connect the Shuttle and battery to the af100 via cold shoe or an articulating arm? Thanks!
