AF100 / AF101 - initial report

while DSLRs have an open/close mechanism, it isn't actually the shutter, the shutter is electronic and there is no noise because nothing is moving, but in any case, the af100 won't have any moving parts either

Nothing that could make a noise in this camera my friends, unless you leave the "press record" beeeeeeep on. :)

Does the AF100 have a mechanical shutter like a DSLR? I know that it doesn't record with one...

...I'm asking because I have to shoot some huntin' videos, and it won't do well if the camera has a shutter that could open and close - make a noise...yada yada.
There is no physical curtain shutter in the AF100 for video usage. The AF100 isn't a stills camera so it doesn't have a mechanical shutter. It can capture single 1920x1080 frames, but that's not the same thing.

In other words, don't worry, the AF100 will always be silent.

There is actually a physical shutter in there, but it's used only for performing a black balance.

With a DSLR, the physical shutter is used when taking stills. There is no actual physical shutter used when taking video, and therefore they are silent too.

Nothing on the camera that can make noise, unless you do a black balance. The beep doesn't happen when pressing record; if you turn the beep on it only beeps when your memory card is full.

If you're using a noisy still camera lens, that might make noise, of course. If using a silent focusing lens like the 7-14 or 14-140, then there won't be any noise at all from any source.

My all over impression about the AF100

My all over impression about the AF100

Guy's guy's guy's...

For a few weeks now I have been sniffing around into all technical details about the AF100 listened to reviews and so on and in what way it would be the best option for me, and now I am sure it is the best option for me.

First of all I want to say that we are discussing here the extreme details about the newest cameras what is good! but let us be honest , bottomline for the regular audience it's just a beautiful image. So honestly without criticizing any brand of camera I was really stunned by the footage I saw on this webpage http://camerarentalz.com/panasonic-af100-footage/
It was again here that I realized that the AF100 in combination with Nano flash or Atomos
' Samurai ' wil be able to compete with all other proffesional camera on the market today.
And I mean ALL! Of course this might only be my opinion. So I setted all my advantages on a row who pulled me over the edge;

- Huge CMOS sensor ideal in low light conditions and super D.O.F
- No Moire or alliases
- SDI output with 4.2.2 collor sample for recording to the ' Samurai ' Apple Pro res 422
- easy workflow
- exchangeable lensses of any kind
- all the features and options from a real filmcam
- recording off uncompressed audio
- long recording time on compact flash cards if desired
- possible of having 3 year warranty and support

And all of this for the price of approximately 6000 $ Atomos ' Samurai ' included

I don't think anyone can make me a better deal price & quality
So my decision is made ! AF100 will be my new camera within the next month
, for the ' Samurai ' I will have to wait untill summer I gues.

Hoi Katty,
I also like the AF101 but since you are in the Netherlands you should read about the 25p jerky playback issue as discussed in some threads. Some claim it doesn't exist while others see it and it's better to know about it before buying the camera I suppose. I work around it by shooting in 24p which plays back fine. Apart from all this the camera is great.
Groetjes.

Hi Rieni,

Wow , thanks for the tip, din't hear about this before and I wil sure dug in to that, and what Panasonic will do about that! Hope it is a firmware issue that can be solved.
However I want to shoot mainly film production. If I need to shoot for commercial or television I can go interlaced. But it would be a shame not able to shoot propperly at 25p (ggrrr)
all check it out wright now. thx

Hi,

I have a piece of footage that was shot at 25P posted at 25P and used at the IBC. It looks just fine. I think the issue is more what monitor they were using.

Best,

Jan

I never see to much jerk on my monitors but I had a JVC CRT 17" monitor that looked bad. It was only hooked to the monitor for a brief moment so I didn't think much about it at the time. But on my three monitors at home and on board monitors no particular jerk with 25p.

It keeps coming up but many people including those above have knocked this myth on the head. I shoot 25p and monitor on a Panasonic broadcast monitor amongst others and there is no problem. Some of my 25p material is transferred to HDCAM and the engineers say there is no problem - all looks good.

Hi guy's and Jan, thanks for the confirm ! it makes me happy. I am a HVX200 owner and Panasonic klient for years and I could not imagine Panasonic would release cams with such a problem.
So all ok now :-) thanks a lot.

It was on a broadcast Panasonic broadcast monitor I first came across the issue. I´m pleased to hear you have no problems with 25p material. We had on both our cameras. Maybe it´s just perception, but everyone on the production saw it. We tried to change our shooting style to be even more carefull than before, but we never got the results we wanted. We had very little time to test the cameras prior to the shoot as they were delivered just days before shooting start.
In comparison we have shot plenty of broadcast television with EX and HVX200 cameras in 25P and never had an issue.
I hope I can find a solution I´m happy with, and after reading your (and others) post it looks possible.
Could you share your camera settings please?
I´m getting my camera back tomorrow and can finally start testing it out again

Can someone who has "the issue" please shoot footage that shows it, and then post the original raw untouched card image? In other words, format a card, film something that has "the issue", and then zip up the entire PRIVATE directory of the card and upload it so we can see exactly what you're talking about?

Hey Yoak,

Did you still have the artifacts in the Final Cut timeline or just on the monitors? was the footage effected?

I don't use Final Cut so I wouldn't be able to speak to that.

I tested by connecting the camera directly to a broadcast video monitor -- that's the only way to eliminate computer playback issues from the chain of events. And when used as a live camera head or recording 25p and playing back from the camera on a monitor, it absolutely appeared to me to be working exactly like it should.

I'll try to find the time for pinpointing the problem this week and will try to upload some of the problematic footage. I want to go through the jerky footage frame by frame to see if the problem is inside the frames or not. The strange thing is that the audio isn't affected, the clip where I noticed the jerky playback has a music track dubbed on it and the music plays back fine. That was another reason for me to believe the problem isn't in the software that's used for playing back the file, if it was the audio would stutter as well, right?

Nope, that is not true. I've written my own video mixing software based on Max/MSP and I can tell you, when the system becomes overloaded on my system two laptops ago, the video would stutter but the audio would NEVER drop out. In fact, I put in some code to SERIOUSLY overload my system to drop the FPS down between 6 and 12 and the audio still continues without a problem. Not that certain software won't do this, I am sure some will, but I've never witnessed an audio drop out unless it was an issue of just getting the data to begin with, like streaming.
