Redrock Micro Sees Bright Future in Upgrade for M2 Cinema Lens Adapter

cinescreen II with cineLux™ dramatically improves light performance for award-winning M2 cinema lens adapter

September 25, 2008 Dallas, TX – Redrock Micro, the leading provider of cinema accessories for digital filmmakers, today introduced the cinescreen II upgrade with cineLux for the M2 cinema lens adapter. This upgrade delivers significant improvements in light transmission, contrast, and sharpness for the hugely popular Redrock M2.

The cinescreen II delivers twice the light transmission of the current M2 cinescreen. Screens are also referred to as “ground glass” or “imaging element” and are one of the central components of 35mm lens adapters. cineLux™ technology is at the heart of this improved screen, and has been in development for 2 years at Redrock. cineLux is a proprietary process designed to deliver superior light transmission, sharpness, and contrast, while maintaining the legendary Redrock “film look” bokeh.

“With the cinescreen II, we feel we have the best screen (ground glass) of any 35mm adapter in the market today,” said James Hurd, Chief Revolutionary for Redrock Micro. “As you look at all the performance factors including light loss, falloff, linear response, and bokeh rendition, the cinescreen II stands alone.”

In addition to greatly improved light transmission, the cinescreen II also delivers outstanding performance in the important aspects of light falloff, bokeh rendition, and stable performance when stopping down. Unlike other solutions whose light transmission and falloff deteriorates as you stop down, the cinescreen II performance continues to be top notch.

“This is a no-compromise screen that gives the M2 best-in-class capabilities,” added Mr. Hurd. “The cinescreen II is the first in a number of planned enhancements to the M2 platform that gives Redrock customers a cost-effective path to continuing advancements.”

The cineScreen II upgrade will be available in quantity starting October 1st. Upgrade price is $125, a 50% savings off the list price of $250. The upgrade kit is designed to be user installable. Third party installation services are also available for customers who prefer a turnkey service.

Wow, this was unexpected. I thought that RR would just come out with a new adapter. Pretty cool, would be interesting to see some M2 owners post some before and afters with this new GG.

I will (hopefully) be one of the first in line to get this new cinescreen, and I'll be more than happy to post some before/after results.

The new Cinescreen II is awesome, guys. I haven't had a chance to play with the production model yet but the value of the M2 is back in the boat from my earlier run n'gun testing. Light loss is up to snuff with the current adapters, image sharpness with the MicroX is fantastic as well. And, if it's still the same grain pattern, it looks wicked when turned off. lol.

I'll grab some footages asap for the kiddies, if permitted, but I'm actually really excited about acquiring an M2 Rig again for Rentals and Usage.

Glad that the folks over at Redrock decided to take this route and get back in the game earlier.

Now, I am confused..

I thought M2 don't need conderser becouse it have very diffused screen..

Buy that logic; if they release new brighter GG without condenser, they would have problems with vignetting..

Or am I wrong??

Yes please post what you've got as soon as you've got it. How much brighter have you found the ultimate to be in comparison so far? If it's on par with the extreme with the ability to stop down as much as you want that'd be pretty cool.

The strange thing, with all three, is that they don't behave the same throughout the aperture range, anyway.

It's really hard to tell which one is technically faster, I've resigned myself to thinking that they're all as fast as we've hoped them to be and lightloss just isn't a real factor in deciding which one you want to choose.

I haven't had a chance to play with a production screen, hopefully very very soon. The footage that I did get from the pre-production model was pretty nice!

I'm gonna have to get, and already planning to get, another M2 setup with the new screen and MicroX. The second I shot the test footages with it I already knew. Can't post that stuff up but, again, when I get a chance with one of the Production models on the HPX170 I'll ask permission to show some stuff.

Its funny how changing out the element takes it from bottom of the heap to competing with the Ultimate. Its funny because its true.

Competing with the Utlimate in... Light loss? You can't really get any lower than .5 stops.

Other than that, they're not in the same class still. The M2 is now where the Letus Extreme is. Not where the Blade and Ultimate area would be.

The cinescreen II delivers twice the light transmission

Wow! Bold statements.

Let´s see how the gear holds up to that.

From a German point of view, it´s always funny that in anglo-saxian countrys, companys offen say that:

they are the #1,
the leader,
the industries best blah.... andwhatnot.

But you can read those statements on almost every website.

But Kholi, Wouldn't the Upgraded M2 Allow for Any aperture and any Shutter Speed while still losing a very small amount of light? That seemed to be the big sell about the Ultimate and it seems to put it a step ahead of the extreme, if the light loss is comparable. I know it's still just and M2 and looks like a lunch box sitting in front of the camera, but if it gets the results...

it might still get the results, but how does this help the fact that it is very difficult to seut. I have read horror stories about adjusting for backfocus etc... Some people have sold it for just that reason.

How does changing just the GG recreate a better edge to edge sharpness? This was another major issue of the M2.

Thats true, the edge to edge was muchaca! I also had problems with a bent motor shaft because the disk is basically just strapped right on. Made for terrible wobbles. I would hope Redrock would take a serious look at updating their whole adapter.

The big sell about the Ultimate is not non-linear light performance by any means.

The big sell about the ultimate is: High shutter speeds without swirling grain, accurate color reproduction, image sharpness (still nothing as sharp as the ultimate, but it costs more as well) and a few other things.

The Light loss is comparable indeed, no denying that.

A thinner groundglass (I believe someone from one of the production camps said it) allows for a sharper image. In conjunction with that I had a MicroX on my test Rig and it was, at first glance, sharp across the field with wide lenses. More testing to come with that. And, we all have learned flip-units make the image sharper from edge to edge to begin with.

The M2's backfocus troubles are honestly no different than the rest. Collimation pretty much has to be added for all but the Ultimate, nay? =P M2 isn't singled out.
