AF-100 vs (non-MX) RED.

Matt Gottshalk

Resident Preditor
Was on a RED shoot in the studio. We shot over a white cyc bkg as well as green screen.

On the 2nd day I brought the AF-100 to the shoot and on a few shots rolled off on it as well.

I was especially keen to see how well the 4:2:0 keyed.

NON-MX RED with a Zeiss ZF.2 50mm prime (Nikon mount)
4k Redcode 36

AF-100 with Nikon mounted Tokina 28-79mm f/2.6-2.8 (Great glass, BTW as it is based on an Angenieux design)
1080P24 PH mode

So here you go.

Thank you, for delivering an absolutely beautifully shot segment with the af. The footage looks delicious, regardless of the comparison between it and the RED. It looks great alone.

Now is the part where you share your in camera settings. :D

Man... those skin tones.... dayummm.

Well done Matt. Excellent result.

I am surprised and delighted how well the AF stood up to the RED in every respect.

Thanx for posting this.

Thanks Matt. So, was there any issue pulling a key from the AF-100 footage? These "Real world" side by side comparisons are not pure "Technical" comparisons, but they do reinforce our understanding that, while yes camera choice matters, what is more important is the work of talented cinematographers, and what they do with the cameras they have. Great footage.

OKay - here's the thing...

It looks good. Both look good - good work.

On the white cyc though, I can notice quite a bit of banding in the AF-100 footage... not that it matters too much, but look at the screen on an off axis and it easily becomes very noticeable, now apply this thought to something that you have to grade and you will see how quickly it falls apart...

I think a visit to the optician is in order.

I believe that I dialed in the WB manually as well.

Some of the tungsten fixtures were trending warmer than usual.

The Red footage looks a little brighter. The AF100 seems to be a little warmer in the skin tones. I like the look of the AF100 over the Red.

The banding seems to be monitor and / or compression related. All the footage is banding on my DELL, while the ACER extended desktop is much less noticeable. The stock Radeon HD card might also be the culprit. These observations from the downloaded version of the scenes.

As a straight out-of-the-camera reaction, I also prefer the way the AF100 looks. Granted, that RED footy can be pushed all the way to Cleveland to get what you want out of it!

I am re-grading the RED green screen footage to get closer to what I saw.

I will re-upload when it is ready.

Thanks for all of the comments.

Nice work Matt. I have a question about your lighting setup. I noticed the large key light is pretty straight from screen right. This is just a personal taste, but I like to have a little shadow under the chin so I tend to have the lights a little higher. Gives the talent a little more definition on the face a appear a little thinner. Women especially don't look great when the camera is low and bottom lit. This lighting can work if the camera was higher. Just my two cents. Great work though and thanks for sharing.

Really, you like the Red's color more than the AF's? I have to say that the Red has the clear advantage in terms of resolution. Look at the detail on the sweater.
