AF-100 vs (non-MX) RED.

To my eye the Red does much better with skin tones, the AF100 looks a bit cartoonish, flat and pasty, by comparison. There is much more subtlety to the skin texture with the Red and better handling of highlight areas.

It takes a pair of minutes or so to apply a decent look to RED footage in REDCineX.

Even just changing it to RC2 and RG2, then applying a basic curve takes no time before exporting...

No offense, why don't people take the time to just adjust the R3D before exporting? Then go on to compare the footage when it hasn't been treated as it should...

Really, you like the Red's color more than the AF's? I have to say that the Red has the clear advantage in terms of resolution. Look at the detail on the sweater.

Definitely, when I did a 100% blow up on the RED footage, you can see the stitching on his sweater.

Bet then again, @ 4k, you better!

IMO the RED is better. Look at the detail on the sweater. You can see the stitching in the neck line of the sweater on Red. The hair on his left arm is visible. Not on the AF100. The texture in his face/neck is visible on RED. On the AF100 it's smoothed. Look how RED resolves the folds of the fabric on his right arm. RED looks more photographic, where as the AF100 looks like more videoish in this test. It doesn't surprise me. The RED is in a different market and price range. I shot with the AF100 last night, and I like the camera for what it is, and didn't expect it to be RED. I enjoyed the AF100..

I agree w/ EVERYTHING you've said. The only thing that I want to point out is that the Red skin tone looks rather sickly. Look at his hand and forearm, that's yucky.

I know new images will be posted and that this type of stuff can be corrected in post. But while I find the AF's color a little too saturated, I don't like the Red's color at all. Again, I understand this can be corrected.

I really hope no one is surprised by this :) Given the red is 4K, it will NO QUESTION have more detail that the AF100. If not, something would be SERIOUSLY wrong. I still think the footage looks nice from the AF100, and I think it did a good job. The one thing I see Red Footage absolutely excel at is the desaturated contrasty look, think Book of Eli. All that extra detail really pops and on the films I've worked on that had red footage, this was one thing that I always enjoyed so much. I would maybe turn the chroma down a bit on the AF100. It looks too saturated to me.

don't worry, it's just as natural and flat as possible, that the main factor. look a lot more filmic and open to millions of options.

Skin tones are an equal product of camera and operator. MX does handle skin better (to me) but RED's original Mysterium's no slouch, either. It depends on who's shooting and who's grading.

Here's a range of skin tones and skin textures and a 1st light. Tungsten based lighting, daylight ambience.

Yeah the AF100 looks a bit over exposed and may be clipping the reds a bit.
