Advice on P2 import - Gray Screen Mac Crash

Today I shot some footage with my new HVX and filled up the two 8GB P2 cards I have with it. Each card ended up with about 20-30 files or so.

I use P2 Genie on My Powerbook G4 to transfer the P2 data to a Lacie external 500GB FW800 HD, with the setting to erase the P2 cards once it is finished copying. This has worked sucessfully without problems for about 20 transfers over the last month.

So I transferred the data from the two cards sucessfully, and then connected the Lacie to my G5 Quad running FCP 5.1.1. Within FCP, I import the P2 data to a FCP project that is located on an internal 500 GB HD within my G5.

When importing the P2 data from the second of the two folders (of MXF files), my Mac froze and crashed with the "Grey Screen of Death".

After a lot of troubleshooting and crashing, I determined that the crash was happening when three of the 20 or so MXF files were part of the selected import list Two of those three files that imported sucessfully (without crashing the Mac) contained "colored blocky snow" when played in quicktime. One of them had the blocky corruption only at the beginning of the file (and then played fine). The other file was corrupt all the way through. The last of the three files would be the one that would always crash the Mac during importing.

I was reading some other posts on this forum regarding corrupt data. I decided to transfer the data back to the P2 card to see if the corrupt files would play in the camera. Before moving the Lacie back to my Powerbook, I attempted to copy the "CONTENTS" folder to my Macintosh HD on the G5 (just using the finder). During the copy process, it crashed the Mac with the gray frozen screen (without FCP even open). I found that a particular problem MXF file was about half written when the crash happened. When I restarted my computer, I tried to copy that file alone across to the desktop, and it copied fine. When I then tried to copy the whole "CONTENTS" folder again, the Mac crashed during the copying of the same file.

I then decided to go ahead and move the Lacie back over to the Powerbook and attempt to copy the "CONTENTS" folder back to the P2 card (inserted into the Powerbook slot". The copy process worked sucessfully without a Powerbook crash.

So then powering up the HVX, I tried to play the bad files. They all play with the corrupt blocky colored snow in the camera viewfinder. The other files that seemed to be unaffected play fine.

So to any of you experts out there, do you have any thoughts as to what has happened here? Was this just an unlucky hiccup in a process that has worked well so far over other shooting projects?

There are two problems here that I can see. One is the corrupt files...the other is the Mac G5 Quad crashing during the copying process of these files, either into FCP or just to another Hard Drive. A have about six other Lacie external HD's connected to the G5 that work just fine with it.

Thanks in advance for any help. I did do a "repair disk permissions", and I "repair drive" for the Lacie disk within the Disk Utility. I cannot determine if the Lacie disk is formatted in NTFS or FAT32. It just says "Mac OS Extended" under the Format heading.

Sounds weird.

"Mac Os Extended" means HFS+, or the standard Macintosh Filesystem for Mac OS X.

To me it would indicate a problem with the camera.....

If there was an error in the P2 Genie Copy operation you would get a shorter/Smaller (and non playable) clip.

Datacorruption in the Macroblock scale (like you describe) would point to either an error when writing to the card or while streaming from the Card.
Similar errors have been seen when importing into FCP directly from the PCMCIA slot, but I have never heard anyone experiencing it when doing a simple copy operation (like P2 Genie does)

Well I shot some more footage this afternoon, filling up the two 8GB P2 cards again.

This time everything went smooth during my transfer process.

So I don't know what happened. Hopefully it was a one time problem.

I still can't figure out why the one .mxf file was crashing my Mac when I was simply copying the "CONTENTS" folder from the Lacie to the internal HD.
