Additional Atomos Shogun Update

Out of interest does anyone know how large the 4K Raw Cinema DNG files will be? I can't seem to find this info anywhere online.

Each frame i about 13.5MB so multiply by frame rate. You need lots of storage...

And again, you contribute nothing but snark. What a waste.
That's not even remotely snark. When you game return policies and send new products into the used bin/landfill, you damage customers who legitimately research and respectfully buy products they mean to keep (barring actual manufacturing defects). Do I need to remind you of this like a child?

Mitch, thank you for your thorough response. Honestly it's a breathe of fresh air to hear a technician talk about the details. It's important. Having had a nano and working with your tech support I can say companies like yours and sound devices are second to none. I wish I could purchase a 7Q, but unfortunately I plan to use a 4k recorder with my A7s. Ive had a shogun on preorder since July, but the responses from Atomos tech support are frightening when asking SPECIFIC details about how their tech works. I can't seem to get straight answers and its frustrating. It's taken several months to get responses
to the easiest questions like 4k to HD downscaling. I have yet to hear back about Timecode! Just read through the Atomos fourm
and look how their technician response to some of the questios. It's almost childish. Anyway I'm done. Well see
what happens. I'll have all my answers within 24 hours after having the Shogun in my hands. At least BH has a decent return policy if the Shogun turns out to be a toy.

Atomos had to introduce a small physical change into the design of the Shogun a couple of months back, because it was getting too hot and they needed even bigger heatsinks. AFAIK, it works with an FPGA (the GH4 uses an ASIC), because this is what makes sense for a small-volume product. Don't expect something like the Ninja Star (or maybe even a Ninja Blade) to record 4K until either they get more modern FPGAs (no idea which one they use right now) or somebody releases an ASIC that's capable of this kind of work.

Maybe with a slow moving fan? These companies are going all in at each other's throat, so soon enough we'll know what's possible and what is not.
I think from both the cost and the marketing perspective, it makes little sense right now to have an external recorder with only a marginal improvement over the currently available internal recording. This is why you're seeing Q7 and Shogun at this juncture. They really do offer a lot more functionality over the cameras themselves.

The next step is likely to be an improved internal recording, as you're seeing already on NX-1, which will put pricing pressure on Atomos and CD. The step after that is a "mini-URSA" type camcorder that can record internally in a compressed but sufficiently useful bit rate - say, up to 200 Mbps in HEVC 4K - with several smaller flip-out screens/EVF's and a large fast SSD. And that will leave the external recording (probably ProRes 4444) for the high end projects only

Speaking of Cinema DNG - is there any workflow to get these files into AVID? Perhaps the new 4K capable Avid software will offer an AMA flow as they have for DPX files, but I haven't heard any talk of it. Right now, Cinema DNG doesn't do much for me since I can't ingest or transcode it (on PC) without Resolve and a long round trip.
Also - any talk of connecting the 7Q to the F55 HDMI out?

Mitch, is part of the Odyssey roadmap to develop the ability to record material from the Sony A7s and the like? On the previous page of this thread you allude (my interpretation) to this being possible but I am unclear if the Odyssey 7Q can record UHD from the Sony A7s

It is correct that the Odyssey7Q currently does not record 4K or UHD over HDMI. However we have stated that we are committed to offering a path for Odyssey7Q owners to be able to do so in the near future. Our engineers have been working hard at this and we will offer our solution soon.

Please note that Odyssey7Q record options are only in support of RAW signals from specific cameras. Such RAW signals are unique to each camera, and Convergent Design must program support for these signals on a custom basis. For instance on the FS700 we not only record the camera's 4K RAW up to 60p and 2K RAW up to 240p, but we also communicate with the camera to support recording a very camera-specific 4K RAW burst of 440 frames of 120p. We also do not just record the RAW outputs, but additionally take the 4K RAW, deBayer it into high quality video, and then record it in UHD or supersampled HD in ProRes 422(HQ). This is a processing-intensive functionality that is quite advanced and not offered by any other recorder system, not Codex, not Atomos, not Sound Devices, not even Sony's own recorder solution. For this advanced functionality that only applies to the FS700 and the new FS7 we do charge an extra fee. Should you not be using either of those cameras then you do not need it so you don't pay. Otherwise we would have to amortize the cost into the price of all Odyssey7Q units sold.

The Sony a7S outputs UHD and HD video, not RAW. As standard video signals, we support recording them in ProRes 422(HQ) on the base unit of the Odyssey7Q. There is no additional record option to capture 4K or UHD video. We currently have clients who are using the Odyssey7Q o record 4K video in ProRes 422(HQ) from the Sony F55 and the Panasonic GH4 (with the YAGH base), and they are doing so without purchase of an additional record option.

So....Am I right in thinking, from this information that 'potentially' the 7q could record a raw signal (say from an fs700) and a UHD signal simultaneously? I know this might be pushing it, both for those of us using the fs700 with the A7s as a 'B-cam' (and there seems to be a lot in that boat) that would be incredible! I realise I may have to purchase a 'multi record' option, but if I was only recording two inputs could I potentially purchase a 'dual record'?
I know this is all blue sky dreaming at the moment, but for a single 'run n gun' operator this would be amazing, and a 'pan n scan' dream :)
would even be happy with a ProRes 422 in HD from the FS700 and a ProRes UHD from the A&S for my panin and scanin a7S....whadya reckon mitch?

Sorry I've been away from the forum for a few days.

Yes, we will soon have a solution for capturing 4K over HDMI.

Alas, no. Our Multi-Stream recording will only be for HD signals. Too much data to handle multiple 4K feeds.

Not even UHD & HD?
ahhhhh well...would have been sweet-thanks anyway mitch, continue to appreciate your engagement on these forums...

Atomos Shogun *update~
Firmare delays release until sometime before Christmas..
I personally am glad they have decided to hold off until the product is complete without quirks or failure.
