Add "coloring / grading" section to POST-PRODUCTION TOOLS section of DVX?

hi guys,

What's everyone's thought on maybe adding a "coloring / grading" section to the POST-PRODUCTION TOOLS section of DVX?

A place for discussion on Davinci Resolve (like I have somewhat gotten into here), Speedgrade, Colorista, etc.. as well in general just discussions on LUTs, film emulation LUTs, coloring in various software... and well everything in-between?

What do you guys think?

Cheers

Sam I was waiting for you to pipe up! Almost even mentioned your name!

I know Sam and I like discussing grading in sub-sections of the forum but they get lost in there and it would be nice to put them in a common place - after all colouring is not entirely relevant to the specific camera used. (well I guess that can be argued).

Shall we build an index of topics we can discuss in our wonderful new sub-forum?

Potential Topics
- To LUT or not to LUT, that is the question
- De-logging footages
- Primaries & grading
- Secondaries & grading
- Qualifiers. ie. how to isolate specific aspects of an image through use of power windows, qualifiers, and the methods
- Getting a "film look"
- This software versus that software
- Round trip workflow

others?

Round Tripping and deliverables

Ok I've added round tripping. Can you elaborate on "deliverables"?

In the meantime I wrote a great guide on the subject of round tripping if you're interested, just ignore that it's specific to the Sony F55.. it's quite irrelevant.

Good idea. It's surprising there isn't one yet. But film look topics are pointless. Nobody can agree. Everybody just thinks their cameras are filmic and if you say otherwise you are an a-h. Look at that Varicam LT thread and when I said it looked like video and it does.

Great potential topics list Dennis! I'd really like to have a dedicated board as well.

Regarding film looks, this is a special topic, with many variables, but maybe we can break it down a bit. I think in grading you have two stages. A correction part, where you fix exposure, WB and a creative part, where you build your look. I'm struggling with the creative part a bit, especially what it takes to make a picture go from "real" to "filmic". Things like cooling shadows, bending hues etc.

Lot's of stuff to talk about and learn ;)

BMCuser has a dedicated section for Resolve, but I think mostly because practically any BMD camera sold comes with free dongle. Either way DVXuser ( a forum for filmmaking as the DVX tagline would suggest ) is long over due for a dedicated section. Also with the advent of Log based gamma curves, shooting flat profiles, etc.. color & grading like never before has become an important if not vital aspect of the overall production workflow.

Regarding film looks - they need to be discussed, and will be discussed because there are very specific post techniques that can go into making an overall look in post (spatial frequency separation, sharpening, strip processes, and more etc.). These only come in post, not in-camera despite arguments about set direction, color palettes, lighting, etc..

Color and looks have also become been part of actual production since ARRI first started making digital cinema cameras - how long has that been? The development or creation of LUTs for on-set use and processing dailies, etc.. are more vital today than ever. Look at all the camera's that can shoot in some log based gamma mode.

I think when nay-sayers get argumentative about film look, etc.. it's usually because someone has suggested that a particular camera lacks "film look" out of the box aiming it at some part in their house as a test. We can all agree film look is a combination of elements, but that includes post & grading so that's where we will stay focused.

Thanks Michael. I absolutely agree to how you have broken it down.

Thank you for that link.

No problem. Most in depth topics I write on DVX I copy to my blog website because too easily they get buried and lost. I can't even find them myself half the time anymore, hence why I decided to publish my posts on my personal website. Which by the way has absolutely no 3rd party ads or camera reviews trying to lure readers to clicking on links to BHPhotoVideo, Amazon, etc.. I do have one ad popup for the Camera Exposure Guide series I am author and publisher of but that is it and small annoyance price for admission.

You're entitled to your opinion, but if others agree or disagree doesn't infer anyone is calling you an a-h as you put it. Just differing opinions.

dennis-

+1 on a good idea

let's not get sidetracked.

can the mods please start making this subsection happen?

for me, dvxuser continues to be on of my go-to forums and has been been for years.

the idea that dvxuser can continue to grow as it's users ask for more opportunity to share is a glorious opportunity.

be well.

Excellent idea. In about a month I will get a new camera; a Canon XC10 which can shoot in 4k C-Log. Learning color correcting/grading and LUTs is near the top of my list. So while I cannot contribute anything but newbie questions, I wholeheartedly support the creation of this subsection.

what is the context you are using that shot in?

hard to say without knowing if it's a comedy, drama, horror, happy, sad, mad, glad.... ya know...

not a fan of 2 & 4 personaly, but if that works in context, then we lurve it
