Adapters

Well I have been looking into adapters lately and I believe the safest and almost cheapest route with adapters appears to be going with the DMW-MA1 (http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/gh1/optional_accessories.html#acc03) and then going on ebay and picking up the necessary adapter to the lens of your choice.

However, I was wondering if someone knew if by buying the panasonic adapter and an adapter like this (http://cgi.ebay.com/AF-Confirm-Nikon-to-Olympus-4-3-Adapter-e400-e410-e420_W0QQitemZ120424620503QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLens_Accessories?hash=item1c09dde1d7&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A15%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50) if I would be able to maintain AF functionality and be able to control the aperture?

thanks

I've been looking into getting a gh-1 and have looked at adapters over ebay is there a difference in quality, would they affect the end photo/video in a bad way?

I was planning on getting one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-lens-to-P...66:2|39:1|72:1205|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50

and then some fast Nikon primes with a physical aperture ring. I'm a filmmaker so auto-focus isn't really necessary.

well i was looking into that adapter... but i am doubtful as to the build quality. so by getting the panasonic one which is like $90 and then one of those ebay ones is like $10-40 for each adapter. making it cheaper to get more adapters than just nikon

and i am not worried about the auto focus functionality it is more that with the AF lenses you do not get a ring to adjust the aperture... thus i am wondering if the setup i posted would provide the ability to adjust the aperture via the camera

I say this lightly because in the extremes there will be an effect, however if your to buy the plastic adapters for sale on ebay you will not depreciate the quality of your footage. Assuming your not attaching poor lenses to the adapter. However, the thing that is important to watch out for is to not put too much stress (weight) on the camera body or the adapter as you can damage the lens, adapter and body. And since i imagine these adapters are not going to have the greatest build quality... use them with caution

1.) The adapters are only used to allow the physical mounting of lenses to the camera body. Therefore, they cannot affect image quality, unless some optics are involved (which shouldn't be the case for any adapter to Four Thirds or Micro Four Thirds). However, poorly made adapters might affect the focus calibration of the lenses. A lens must be mounted precise distance away from the image plane. Even if it's just a little bit off, the focus will be off.

2.) With cheap stuff, there's always the question of quality control and durability. That said, I would not hesitate to buy the cheap stuff. These are such simple devices that I can't imagine any price premiums to be very well justified.

3.) AF confirm chips only give the camera a fixed number for aperture. This is only data; you can still change the aperture to anything that you want, if your lens has as manual aperture ring. AF confirm chips don't do anything else.

I got a Nikon adapter from China on ebay that was posted here and am super happy since it takes all old and new nikon lenses.

I also got a c-mount 25mm to 4/3 adapter and have a couple of cinema lenses that work fine after setting the GH1 to 2x digital zoom.

I might get a canon adapter later on but am already very happy with what I got.
The adapters are all working well, it all depends on the lenses!!!

I wish I could find some Nikon or Canon 12 or 14 mm lenses to get some wide-angle glass. Since the range doubles with 35mm glass, I got extreme tele stuff now but wide angle is my problem.

i just got my Canon FD adapter in today.
i dont have the GH1 yet (next week), but the build quality is very solid.
metal, nice and hefty, and my FD lenses lock in very firmly without any play.

Heres a listing for the same one. $75 off ebay...

I'd love to know how you get on with that one.

This guy has a couple of problems with it. (It's actually a different mount from the same seller).

The biggest worry is the bit about red paint coming off. I'd had to ruin my sensor with a fleck of loose paint.

I wonder how it compares to the slightly more expensive jinfinance one.

interesting. ill let you know once iv gotten to use it.
the jinfinance one puts the red dot in the same place though...

also, the one i picked up from him is the "new" version. it has a flange on
the FD mount end to cover all lens mount gaps (that a camera body would
cover), and he now guarantees infinity focus. so we'll see...

what exactly is the point of that aperture button on jinfinance one?
they say it opens and closes the aperture, but thats what the ring is for.
why would one use the button over twisting the aperture ring?

edit: just got home and took another look at the adapter. the red dot that
was causing trouble in the previous model has been relocated. its out of the
way and wont smear or chip now

by getting the panasonic one which is like $90

Where are you finding the DMW-MA1 for $90? I'm seeing $140-$170

however if your to buy the plastic adapters for sale on ebay

All the adapters I've bought are metal. No plastic adapters I've seen.

the jinfinance one puts the red dot in the same place though...

Not true. I have the FD adapter from Jinfinance and the dot is not in the same place as the Ciecio7 adapter pictured in that blog. If you look at the picture, the problem is with the dot being put on the wings/blades of the m4/3s end of the mount which is why it's wiping off inside his camera. Additionally, both the front and rear red dots on my jinfinance adapter are recessed.

Mine from jinfinance has a ring with a green dot but no button. Maybe it's a button on the new version? I haven't seen it. Link?

ohh ok, they seemed to be from the pictures.
but again, i have the new version and the dot is out of the way

yea i think i was wrong about that one too.
i just went back to the listing, and it looks like they were just referring
to the aperture ring itself. the button was just the Auto release on the
lens, not the adapter.

I have this adapter on my GH1 now, the new version. One single bit of solid metal that's very nicely machined and with good finish. My FD lenses sits neat and snug with it. One of them is a tad harder to twist on but as the adapter have a ribbed flange to hold it's not a problem. Ordered it on Monday, picked it up from the mail office today. Recommended.

thats the same one i have. how does infinity focus work?

update on my FD adapter. works perfect!
locks onto the camera exactly like the stock lens...smooth and clean.
infinity focus is perfect, and the all the red dots are recessed and out of the way.

ciecio7 adapter for FD is good, we were justtalking about them on another thread, I posted this

I ordered and received a ciecio7 adapter. Using it with a bunch of FD's no problem with aperture ring.

I also tested the placement of this mount. I did this by taking a pic using the kit zoomed to 50mm then mounting ciecio7+Canon FD f1.4 50mm and took same pic. Framing was identical which means the ciecio7 mount is positioning the FD lens at the correct distance from the sensor. ciecio7 is all metal too. Works well.

i'd probably get an official Canon to Micro 4/3 adapter if one existed. since not, cheap one on ebay!

Novoflex is as official as you will ever get, it was even recommended by Panasonic reps but I didn't find any place that sells it so I bought the ciecio7 one on eBay

Well for employees you get a discount at Panasonic direct and it was listed as $90, but for some reason they said its not available for online purchase and so i called them and they were clueless as to why it was even posted in their store and would not place an order for me... so oh well

I instead just bought some adapters from ebay, i think it was JR electronics and they are holding up pretty well

I still have not got my GH1. Currently on waiting list and will get it later this summer. But I do have all other goodies :)

Yesterday I got a Nikon E-2 which allows aperture control even on G-lenses or as in my case the Sigmas. And the m4/3->Nikon adapter arrived a month ago. It will be interesting to try the whole rig with adapters and follow focus.

I think the Novoflex has aperture control and is a complete solution instead of my separate adapters.
