Brand New HVX for $2k... I must be dreaming

And you've only been here since January. :)

I know! And what a great place with experienced, professional and nice people ;) I guess I just don't understand why there is so many of these posts all the time, even in the short time i've been here seems there is one every week and we even have stickies for where to buy the HVX along with numerous threads like this one. I understand that anyone wants to be optimistic in obtaining this camera for a cheaper dollar amount, I can't blame them, I've only had mine a short time and it took me months of saving to get it, I'm not sure if it's like that for other HVX users or not, but it took me quite some time of saving. So I can relate to the "dream" of wanting to be able to pick this camera up for a cheaper amount but the reality is that it's just not going to happen. It's been said over and over again. I guess it's just how it is though.

Its "bait and switch" and 4000 is too low to be legit. IF you get it, you'll most likely be getting a grey market, unwarranteed camera. I think 4500 is a possibility (but not necesarily going to happen either) in the future as new models come around but I dont see the RED or the Sony as the ones to drive the price down. Consumer cams do drop fast, but pro cams really dont. They hold their value and arent replaced in a product line every 6 months. Just the nature of the beast.
New cameras come out all the time, and prices do fall quickly depending on the level of competition on the market. DVX price have held stable for a while because of a lack of serious competitors (XL2 was the only other one that really offered 24p in SD and it didn't sell well). But now we have a crowded 1/3'' HD cam market place, with the HVX, A1, HD110, V1U. Look at all the people who say that A1 prices won't ever fall below $3500. Now we're at $3250 with a rebate.

The nature of the beast is that a product needs to remain competitive, whether by feature or by price. The DVX cornered the market on 24p, but now the A1 came did the same thing with HD, so DVX prices have to fall. The HVX's main claim to fame are variable frame rates, solid state recording and an intraframe codec. As soon as a camera comes out with those features at a comparable price point (who knows, the new Sony cam might do it), HVX price is going to fall like a rock.

Since Sony is sticking with the HDV format they won't be a contender in this market. Even with SS technology, HDV is what it is...a lossy compression format.

Well, so is DVCPRO HD. And don't dismiss the pull of HDV, after all, the A1 has been selling extremely well and so is the HV20. The XDCAM EX is really something to look forward to if all the features it listed lives up the hype. Codec isn't everything.

nobody is going to offer a legit HVX for under $4500 in the reasonable near future (if EVER). it just aint gonna happen.

Unless their Red One reservation is ready and they're a few grand short, outa time and desperate!!

I had my brother buy mine from a Brooklyn shop. When they asked him what he did for a living and he told them he was a cop, somehow he didn't get hassled with any accessories except the worldwide repair warranty. Actually, it came the next day (overnight) and everything was great. I wouldn't do it, again, because it's kind of risky. I recently checked for them on ebay and they are gone. No profile and no more items for sale. Scary sh*t, huh?

There's a very B-movie petty gangster feel to doing business with these guys but it's hard to justify paying so much more for the camera if you're budget is too tight. I'd love to know if anyone can get an hvx200 for the $2k or $1500 pricetag. If you have, please let us/me know. I'd love to hear what you had to go through.

If that is your camera budget for a movie then you are far better off renting. Buying a package to make a movie wiil cost you more in the realm of 10-15k by the time you get all the needed accessories. However on a rental you could get decent package for about $2,000 for 3 weeks.
