C200: About to do a c200 vs ursa mini 4.6 test

I got a 280 watt Intellytech battery for my Amira. Lasts 4-5 hours on one battery. Will probably buy a couple more large capacity batteries. My Anton Bauer Digital 90's last about 1 hr 20 minutes on the Amira. Just got home from a 20 hour shoot with the Amira, during which I left the camera on most of the day.

When I first used a rented Amira the package came with several 45-60 watt batteries, and they went so fast it was ridiculous. Just use larger capacity batteries and it's not such a big deal.

I think I saw somewhere that the Amira is supposed to have a 50 watt power draw, but 60-70 watts seems more accurate.

How are you liking the Amira? Do your Canons still get used or ignored? ;-)

I just got it last week. Filmed a horror film with it over the weekend, and doing a pickup shoot for that tomorrow. I'm liking it so far.

Canons still get used and will continue to be. I don't foresee ever (or at least in the near future) getting booked so often with the Amira that I'd turn down C300 jobs. Maybe I'll market the C100 a bit less, but even those jobs can pay pretty well relatively speaking when hired with lighting and audio. So, it just depends on what camera which clients are willing to pay for, as I'm giving them options at this point. For personal projects and company client jobs (where I'm producing), Amira will be A-cam in most cases. I also double book jobs on occasion, and crew out jobs maybe a couple times a month, so having multiple cameras is more profitable; about 60% of my shoots are multi-cam shoots.

I'd talked of splitting the camera with a co-worker, but we decided to buy our own, so I bought the Amira and he bought an Alexa Mini, both new, which is cool as now we'll have two Arris for our shoots together. I wanted to get a used one to save some money, but the used market dried up when I was ready to buy (they were selling at a mere 10% less than buying new), and Arri was about to increase their prices at the beginning of October, so I bought it just before Arri increased their prices by 10%. I do say, a camera company increasing their prices is always a good sign to me that a camera is a good investment; my Amira is already worth $4k more now than when I bought it new.

A couple photos of my collection I took for marketing purposes.

ha, that collection is insane...and here I am debating if I want to spend $300 on an extra lens.

P.S. That 30-105 looks really nice on the Amira.

Eric, do you rent these cameras out or only own them for your personal/company use?
I rent my cameras out without me on the shoot maybe a few times a year, so not a whole lot. Mostly to people I work with a lot. When I got my first C300 Mark II I told people I'd only rent out the camera if I was on the shoot, but I've loosened up a bit and now rent it out to some people I work with regularly and trust. As I get more cameras I'll probably be more open to renting out gear; I've thought of starting a rental company/website but not so sure of that path. The cameras keep pretty busy on my own shoots. Here are the hour meters of each camera now...

Camera - Purchase Date - Hours
C100 Mark I (May 14, 2013): 1048
C100 Mark I (May 22, 2014): 917
C100 Mark II (Dec 31, 2014): 1277
C300 Mark II (Nov 9, 2015): 534
C300 Mark II (Jun 3, 2016): 335
Arri Amira (Oct 11, 2017): 32

What I really like is that the EF locking mount feels plenty sturdy to me to use with the Canon compact cine zooms without lens support. On the C300 the lens mount will sag a bit without support, and would probably loosen and get damaged over time, but the Amira's locking EF mount feels nice and rigid. Which means, lens changes are quicker, as well as less rigging needed. I can therefore mount the camera to Steadicam without using a rail based baseplate system which can add a couple or few pounds to the rig as well as increase the height of the sensor from the gimbal of the Steadicam, which is not preferred. If I'm using a wireless follow focus, I can rig it from the top handle.

I'm using the Zacuto VCT Pro with the Amira, along with Zacuto VCT Pro Quick Release on the Steadicam, so going from shoulder mount or tripod to Steadicam is really quick. I find the padding on the Zacuto VCT Pro to be better than Arri's shoulder mount offerings, though I really wish the Zacuto had a rosette on both sides.

First shoot with it and I'm in the ocean with it.

you can only take two of these on most airlines as carry on. thats ok if you can share them along with other crew traveling I guess.

Dropbox, Box or Google Drive would be the easiest. How much data are we talking? I might be able to help out...

Thanks, that would be cool the c200 files are smallish, but the 4.6k raw is huge. but they are small clips- ill choose some that are close to the same exposure. i didn't do this perfectly as i only had the screens to go off - i couldn't find the histogram on the c200!

but i could we-transfer them to you if you want?

Thanks for sharing. I would say from an overall perspective, the C200 is the winner for me, then the EVA. Both nice though and a little larger than expected for handheld after seeing them on screen.

With all of this flat shooting and grading, I often see this mid gray look which is ugly imho. I do not work with LOG footage but it looks to be like getting green out of an image. Best to take a few stabs at it to make its all gone!

In the comparison above........When only adjusting "Contrast and Saturation", the Ursa Mini Pro looks really nice! Wish he would have added the Ursa Mini Pro to the Over Exposure Test (that test only compared FS7II, C200 and EVA1).........

For the overexposure test, I'd love to see it done completely in the RAW workflow, not converted into ProRes.

Blackmagic's CinemaDNG is almost impossible to overexpose & lose any information.

It would have to be done deliberately (like shoot outside at f/1.2 @ 180° with no NDs), ha.

A ProRes comparison could have been nice though.

Don't cheap out Bro! Buy that 30-105 and I will send you a crate of virtual beer. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
