Abel Cine Tech put a Pl mount on the 7D

I saw this video and just had to share it. Abel Cine Tech put a PL mount on the 7D and made a kit. What are your thoughts on this 4800$ version of the canon 7D. It will come as a kit with Canon 7D Camera Modified with PL Mount and Hot Rod Central Support . http://vimeo.com/10530565

Actually Illya Friedman from Hot Rod Cameras is the developer of that mod.

Abel is just selling it.

Cool stuff nonetheless.

... but AFAIK the true pioneer was Pawel Achtel and a 50D with a PL mount

And ... who would have ever thought ... now it seems you can use Red Pro Primes (RPP's) on a 5D2 and 7D? See:

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=42058&page=2

According to OptiTek, the PL mount on the RPP has to be modified and then used with his adapter. Supposedly his PL adapter doesn't permanently modify the camera like the Hot Rod mod. He also claims that Cooke zooms and Angenieux lenses will also work. (Personally, I will believe it when I see it ... but who knows?)

I hope that this will finally silence the skeptics who insist that the mirror box MUST be removed.

Can you elaborate on this?

The mirror box must be machined or drilled out/hollowed to accomodate all lenses. This is not speculation, it's fact. If you're happy just to use Optimo Zooms or a very limited set of primes then this kind of mount is fine.

Regarding the Optitek Mod:

it Will accomodate Optimos, some other Zooms, maybe the Clairmont TS set, and Red Pro Primes but only after they've had the custom shorter rear flanges applied.

Hope that makes sense to someone. To acommodate ALL PL mounted lenses the mirror box must be modified, as the HotRod Cameras / Abel Cine PL7D is, or as the Denz Deniz / FGV rentals 7DPL which has a custom Mirror box replacement as well.

I would be happy as hell to be able to use a set of RPP's and an Optimo zoom or two ... but there are just a couple of little problems ... a set of RPP's cost $19,000 (an absolute bargain) and let's see ... an Optimo 28-76/T2.6 is what ... about $53,000! Yup ... I guess I could get by with that piece of kit (maybe in my next life).

I wonder how many rental houses will putz around with their RPP's and Optimos so they can rent them to EOS users?

I'll stick to my ZF and C/Y Zeisses and my Nikon zooms for the time being.

Oops, my bad. I'm embarrassed beyond belief. :crybaby:

But I still insist that the mirror box does not need to be removed. I realize that it's normally an obstacle for most PL lenses, but when live view is enabled, the mirror is moved out of the way, so there should be clearance for any PL lens. Unless I'm misremembering something...

You'd be surprised - PL mounted lenses are rentable these days for very fair prices, and here in Hollywood where these little DSLR's are being used on more and more projects it only makes sense to use lenses that already have professional focus throws, precise distance scales, integrated arri pitch gearing that won't slip or get misaligned during a shot.

No Knock on C/Y, ZF and Nikkors - I LOVE MY C/Y SET!

@Mr.Ydgmglu guy: No need to be embarassed. A lot of research and development went into allowing ALL 35mm PL mount lenses to attach to the HotRod PL7D. There's a lot of Plastic and Metal in the way of allowing that to happen - but it's no match for the laser wielding robots that methodically make every PL7D a reality! (jokes, sort of)

Hot Rod vs. OptiTek = different strokes for different folks. Whatever works for you.

Just the fact that we now have these sorts of choices (and don't forget the new Zeiss Compact Primes) is a good thing. Says a lot about the cameras.

I'm actually embarrassed because I neglected to check the video that the OP linked. I'm familiar with the general clearance issues.

What other plastic and metal things are in the way, besides the mirror?
