A7s sample footage

Hi Guys,

i got my a7s three days ago and bought a canon 24-105 with it. Put everything together with my speedbooster i had for my fs700 and filmed some car to car stuff yesterday.
A selfmade brushlessgimbal was used. Also a ND8 filter and everything was filmed in slog2 standart settings (pp7). I'm superhappy with the quality of this small camera.
And for this i also forgot to switch back to 25p. So all is filmed with 50p, after seeing some testcharts, 25p should be even better. If you see the original file, it's awesome.
I just put a LUT on the footage but did not match the exposure for all the shots. But enough to judge the camera :) And sorry, i didn't notice the small dirt particles covering the ND while filming, so at the endshots i got some not so good flares because of that :/

cheers
Marcus

That canon 24 to 105 seems to make the a7s shoe in all the footage i'm seeing. this seems to be the perfect combo.

Some a7S footage from Hawaii...used Kholi's PicPro settings for some of it, also regular sLog2 with Film Convert. You can notice the in camera files break up with lots of fast motion (rain scene), I don't know how external ProRes would have handled that. Great little camera!

Looks beautiful!
What happened with the rain then?

Apart from that, really, really nice

(also, I didn't notice anything wrong when I watched it the first time, with my normal TV-watching distance and not having read your comments yet)

FS700 for handheld shots, and A7s for Steadicam/wide shots on the interview. Gamma curve matched perfectly, but colors were different between the two and required some finessing in post to get to match.

Our family is doing a haunted house this Halloween, so I thought it would be a perfect time to put the A7S to the test... alot of this was shot at 80,000 ISO! Love this little gem...

Here is a compilation of handheld clips I captured. Slog2 with standard settings, ND7 filter, and post-workflow entirely in Matlab and ffmpeg.

I start by linearizing the slog2 gamma + sRGB color space conversions, then apply a global S-curve to tonemap the clips for my Macbook display. Haven't explored filmic LUTs yet, but will at some point.

Feedback most welcome.

fusuke, I would suggest to get a lense with OSS (or record with a tripod/video stabilizer). That micro shaking is very annoying to watch. I also own Sony FE 35mm without OSS, it produces amazing footage to my eyes but I have to carry a tripod or stabilize the footage in post. I stick with Sony FE 24-70 with OSS most of the time now.

I have to say the a7s is particularly difficult to handhold without shake. I bought a 40mm pancake as my nearly-pocketable setup with no rig of any kind, and footage is coming out too shaky too often. I'll have to concentrate a bit more...

Nice work you've done here. High ISO shooting on this camera is where it really shines.

This thread is bad for my wallet, you convinced me to give the a7s a shot.

What follows is the first in a series of tests which will probably only be helpful to the way I think about shooting, but if someone can take anything away, or recommend a BETTER workflow please share.
I don't feel like I've come close to mastering this little machine so any help is appreciated, especially when it comes to post workflows, and color space recommendations.

PW: wedge

I shot a bunch of wedge tests under difficult circumstances for any camera. After all, we know it’s more than capable in good light.

Grading was done in DaVinci Resolve 11.1 and when possible, used Sony’s latest LUT for S-Log 3, while not specifically designed for the A7s and Slog 2 I figured enough people could derive what the sensor is capable of and how they might dial back the contrast to make this kind of test usable.

In many instances where the image looked perfectly acceptable I dropped something on from the VisionColor – OSIRIS LUT package to see how that would effect the 8 bit XAVC S codec.
And in a few other cases I just added a really ugly grade just to see if I could go in the opposite direction of where I thought the camera’s colorimetry wanted to go, again just to see the codec’s breaking point.

Thanks to DVXUsers Kholi Hicks and Macgregor for making LUTs for use with the a7s and SONY cameras. I threw those in the mix to see if they fit my style of shooting. When I adjusted Kholi’s profile I noted so on in the lower third (I lowered BLACK level a couple points to his “baked in profile” but left his S-Log profile alone).
BTW, the Slog clips were used with Color Mode: Pro

There’s no banding in the original file, but some was introduced in QT conversion and upload. Any tips on how to avoid this would be much appreciated.
Each clip is only 10 seconds but the running time is still a little over 10 minutes so grab a coffee and put on some headphones. I included the soundtrack to Stephen Soderbergh’s “The Knick” by Cliff Martinez to make viewing less painful..
