A7s sample footage

Yeah - if A7s could post their impressions on the A7s now that more projects have probably been completed, that'd be great.
Some sort of "beyond the wow!" reports :-)

I've moved beyond the wow onto "yeah whatever". The A7s highlight aliasing is just unacceptable to me and I didn't like going backwards to 8bit from 14bit raw. Apart from the extra low light ability (which I'm holding onto it for) there's nothing the A7s does better than the 5D.

I don't have a 5D3 to compare against, and the a7s vs BlackMagic tests will be shot next week, but so far I'm still on the "this is one very nice camera" camp. Not the best camera ever, but I like the image and I like the price and I like the form factor, so, pretty happy.

In terms of image quality maybe, but can you put Leica M or zeiss ZM on the canon? no, the lenses will therefore be rather heavy/large for the canon, that can be a consideration too, as well as the EVF.
Ideally one would have both, like you do :)

I've now shot two music videos with the a7s. I've been pleasantly surprised. It works a treat for those situations where 5d raw is overkill (most of them). Codec falls apart a bit in 60p mode (quick exposure changes break everything up, something the 5d h264 never did). APS-C mode is awesome, can use one lens as two.

I don't really have much to complain. These differences about raw this and that and highlight aliasings (haven't even spotted them yet) are quite moot to me. I had a couple of 5d h264 shots in the newest music video too but you can't spot them from the a7s in the finished video eventhough they were very soft 720p.

Lowlight is great but it's heavily noise reductioned, leaving trails behind. 25,600 looked awesome though and we did a scene in a dark forest with it, end result was astonishing. I wouldn't very easily go over 25,600 though. That's two stops more than iso 6400 I would use for the 5d. I've read the complaints about this and that but it seems people complaining about certain "dealbreaking" issues don't actually shoot that much with the camera anyways. For those people, 5d raw is quite unmatchable and will be forawhile. I will still continue using 5d raw in my own projects but everything shot for someone else will probably feature the a7s. Will post video when ready. I also love how you can zoom into the image very clearly and still keep recording. Saved a couple of our rack focuses.

I believe that a shogun attached to this thing will be a monster machine.

Yeah, the hacked 5D3 is still my favourite image... even more so than fs700 4k raw. Whatever canon does with this whole color science thing really stands out.

But for regular projects... the a7s trumps the internal 5d codec. I haven't even shot with the 5d (non-hacked) in over a year now. can never go back.

This is how I'm using my A7s for an up coming 4K project.

I'll have two GH4's for two camera interview setup and the A7's as a third if needed. The A7's will be used for portrait style interviews for shallow DOF and low light situations for broll.

Since I now have a EF to MFT speed Booster all my EF Canon lenses can be used with all three cameras and my native Lumix too. 12-35 and 35-100.

The Shogun will be paired with the A7s for 4K.

I think this is going to work really well since the GH4 isn't a low light camera. I love the image and usability of the GH4. Internal 4K is pretty dang good. We live in some awesome times to be able to shoot 4K at these prices. Mirrorless also makes it so much easier to shoot video. My C100 EVF is not very good at all. Both the A7s and GH4 are great. I have no need for an EVF but maybe only a small monitor for them.

It's telling that people are choosing the 5D raw for personal projects. Like just about every other camera release (except the BM) Sony are holding back on important features like raw and global shutter. The only thing stopping the A7s shooting raw is the firmware. It's a great camera in 2013.

We just used an a7S as a B cam on a feature and couldn't be happier with the footage. And I had a choice of hacked, non-hacked 5D and C100 to external recorder. I decided the F3, a7S and BM 4k was the right combination for this project. The DP agreed and he owns the hacked 5D.

Just about done wrapping on shooting for a music video and am fairly satisfied and glad I wenr this set up over stock 5d. I have not run into any highlight aliasing issues to my knowledge. I love the image from this cam.

Thanks for all these precious feedbacks!
How do you find yourselves changing your lighting habits with the A7s?
Is it really possible to use natural light as your main light source and add artificial lights to sculpt your subject in most situations?
How about the internal EVF/screen: good enough for guerilla?

I have no interest in defending Sony whatsoever, but how can you be that sure? I mean, how much of this is your guessing vs known facts?

Very quickly, I don't want to go off subject, but I've not really seen anyone discussing bumping the black level up in the PP in order to see more details in the shadows. Who else is performing this adjustment? I'm really talking about when shooting in non slog, such as CINE4 for example.
