A7s sample footage

Alot of footage I've shot has been daylight landscape stuff. Ideally I'd like to try it on interior shots with mixed lighting. Also professionally lit scenes such as interviews/performance.

Most importantly i would like to ensure the LUT handles all scenes suitably well.

Send me a message with your contact (or contact me via www.llirik.com), i'll dropbox some stuff over to ya.

Cyork, Those stills look fantastic! If you dont mind me asking, what were your in camera settings / post work flow. Looks like Impulz/filmconvert?

I think I used PP6 modified to Cin4/movie color/+1 color phase/+1 saturation and Kholi's slog profile for the horse and prada shot. All others were the cin4 profle. Post was R11 using Filmconvert f55 slog2 sgamut and finished with an Osiris' KDX rec709 Lut. Big part of the look is using the LOG and LGG controls to get the contrast curve I wanted and I mixed the LUTS down to taste. Probably only 30% or so with the Orisirus LUT . Thanks!

Hey everyone,

I've been sitting on the fence between the A7s and the BMCC. Obviously the A7s has the FF look, is smaller and requires less outboard gear. But the noise and 8bit color give me some concern. Have any of you had similar feelings?

Nope. The A7s has a fantastic image, even for a compressed codec. Remember its not AVCHD we're talking about here.

The BMCC has too many other drawbacks for me to have considered purchasing it, and I'm glad I haven't (speaking to people that have, they kinda hate it).

Having used both extensively I say choose on whether you want RAW or not. The BMCC cams take a lot more to get up and running computer and media wise. They addressed some nagging issues in the latest update but audio is still not quite right. The image is wonderful but so is the image on the a7s, one gives you stills, full frame, great lowlight (which the Blackmagic while decent with a fast lents and booster will not touch the a7s in that regard) and slo-mo. The BMPC is now just $2,495 so right inline price wise with the a7s, however after you buy SSD's, HD, a battery solution and audio solution you are paying around the same amount of an a7s with the upcoming Shogun. So again it depends on what image you like the best and how hard are you willing to work to get the image you want.

+1 for a7s over BMCC. I sold my BMCC for a7s since it was too many pieces and everything was too heavy. Heavier camera + bigger batteries and rig and accessories = sturdier (heavier) tripod.

The noise isn't bad as long as you ETTR a stop or two and bring it down in post, the 8-bit can do it. It holds up very well. Extremely well, this isn't anything like stock Canon.

Again I love em both but if you want pro res def get the ninja star for the a7s I used this combo earlier this week and loved it. I can't wait for the Shogun...

Yeah, I'm curious about that too, didn't even consider it. And it's so tiny that it's pretty negligible to throw that onto The Ronin while shitting with the A7s.

Can you guys link me to what you think is the best examples of what the A7s can do?

I think Roman got some good skin color here: https://vimeo.com/100763283

J.R. Saint's shots are really nice: https://vimeo.com/104549696

But there is something about the BMCC that really draws me in, this being the latest that pulls me in: https://vimeo.com/104550045

Maybe I'm out of line here, but I would say look at anything from the FS100/FS700 and assume you can get close to that look- and according to some people here, throw the F35 in there.

If you are going to shoot a lot of high production narrative stuff that you need the raw for (post effects/more flex for grading/etc), I would go with the BMCC- but ONLY in that case.

Again this is probably over simplifying, but I'm trying to help provide some direction. I can only speak for my style of shooting, so this doesn't apply to me, which is why I don't like/use my BMCC, so my advice could be off.

Otherwise in every other case, if the money isn't a huge difference I would go with the A7S or MKIII raw (if you are really a pixel peeper/color grading/post kinda guy)- above that, Scarlet Dragon :)

With the new firmware of the BMPC 4k having much more manageable data formats as well as audio and histogram features, will that change your opinion in the A7s vs BMPC 4k decision? I would also like to hear the opinion of kholi or anyone else who has extensive experience with both platforms.

I'm in a similar situation, deciding between BMPC 4K and Sony A7s. I know there's quite a difference between 14-bit RAW color and 8-bit color, but being new to all this I'm not really sure what that actually affects. I'm mostly looking at shooting scenery videos.

Is it a smoother roll off on highlights, and less banding of colors?

White balance can be adjusted afterwards with RAW, but how different is that to making the image more orange or blue for example?

Sorry to ask newbie questions, but it's hard to know exactly how much of a real life difference the seemingly large difference in specs mean.

It's a shame Sony didn't open up the HDMI to do RAW, the Shogun is capable of storing it, Sony just disabled it from camera (apparently, according to Atoms)

You can adjust everything in post, including WB, even if you don't shoot RAW. But if you shoot RAW the end result is just as good with an in-camera setting or with a post adjustment. If you shoot with a lossy codec, you are degrading the image every time you push it somehow.

I've been doing small WB adjustments in post for years, with non-RAW cameras. Like everybody else, I guess.

Here's a screen of the a7s in slog2 (in s-gamut color space) with a LUT from Alister Chapman (Sky should be a bit better, i think i nocked the circular ND slightly)

I find the image to actually be sharper than when shooting on my fs700 internally.

Sorry, I saw this question a few days ago but didn't have the guts to answer it, and still do not have the guts to answer it.

If you can rent either, spend some time with them, shoot a lot of random stuff, that would be the best way to choose... I think?
