A7s sample footage

I shot this video part as a favor to the dancers, and part as an exercise for myself: I made a shot-by-shot copy of the original dance video.

This is the original video (probably shot on an EPIC, given the budget these Korean idols have):

This is our cover (shot on an a7S with Sigma 19mm f/2.8 and 30mm f/2.8, on a Nebula 4000 for most of the time, and a Flycam Nano for the shifted-horizon shot and a couple of close-up shots):

And this is a side-by-side comparison (you'll see that I went for a grade with slightly greener shadows; totally intentional):

I didn't nail the camera position (it's usually lower in the original video than in mine), and I didn't have coverage for some of the shots (so the edit is not completely identical shot-by-shot), but I'm pretty happy with the exercise (it looks great, and I learned a lot about how they made and edited the original video).

Nice video sam! I'm looking into getting a budget wide angle lens. Do you recommend the sigma 19mm? Also could you share your settings (aperture, shutterspeed, iso, picture profilem, grading prog/utils) for the "Chibi Japan Weekend" video? I really like the look to it. Thanks!

Keep in mind that the sigma 19mm is an APS-C-only lens. It's really nice (sharp, light, and cheap), but if you want to stick to the FF mode, it's not for you. I'm keeping an eye on the new 28mm f/2.0 FE, since the N4000 is a bit underpowered to work with my usual vintage Leica-R lenses (though I shot a big thing last week with my lovely Elmarit-R 35mm f/2.8 on the N4000 and for the first time I got it working; battery lasts half as much as with the Sigma, though).

I always use my Flaat settings, with ISO at 3200 to 12800 for FF mode and 3200 to 6400 for APS-C mode. Shutter speed is usually 1/50 for 24p and 1/100 for 60p (I'm on 50Hz land), but for the dance video I used 1/100 for 24p, it's a crispier look that music videos often use.

The video from the Chibi has A LOT of color work in post. I'm using Colorista III for color correction and for isolating subjects from background (that keyer is GOLD), and Looks for the final color grade. This before/after is from a previous video but the color work is pretty similar:

(nailing the WB in the first place would have helped a lot, but I still would have had to separate this beautiful lady from the background in post) (very proud of how my color correcting and color grading skills have improved in the last 6 months, since I bought Colorista and started playing with it instead of just applying presets)

Thanks :)

I shoot APS-C relatively often, becaue of two reasons:
* On the a7S, 60p looks better at APS-C than at FF
* Lens availability: the sigma 19mm f/2.8 is my best light-weight lens for working with the N4000, and it is APS-C only. I bought the Sony 35mm f/2.8 FE and returned it. It's very nice, but not cheap, and I wasn't crazy about it, so I dediced to return it and wait for the new 28mm f/2.0 instead (a bit wider, a bit faster, a bit cheaper).

On the a7S, going to APS-C mode has a very small penalty: you get your max effective ISO cut down by one stop, and you get one stop deeper DoF. For many projects, none of these is an issue, so, since it's available and it's just as sharp as the APS-C mode, why not use it if needed. Next Friday I'll be shooting my biggest project of 2015, and all the N4000 footage will be with the sigma 19mm f/2.8, because I'm going to be short on time and the AF mode (press before shooting, to lock focus) will allow me to move a bit faster than with my (nicer) vintage glass.

That is awesome dance Samuel! Was that shooting using nature light? I got A7s and 28mm FE ordered to pair with Pilotfly. And you do use ND filter or vari ND for daytime?

My latest video for your consideration ;)
3/4 of it were shot with the Shogun in 4K (Prores422), the rest in 1080p/ 60p.
Almost everything in classic Cine 1, lenses were the sigma 24-105 and Contax 50mm. Hope you like it ;)

For those events it's always available light. I try to go close to the big windows, but many shots are shot farther inside, with whatever lights the venue has in a particular area (they have several kinds of fixtures).

I use Hoya ProND filters, and these videos probably have the 6-stops one if close to the big windows, and the 3-stops one when farther inside.

SOOOOOOOOO beautiful... Breathtaking...

(not liking the subject: yoga, though)

I did use Samuel's Flaat (thankyou Sam) and Kohli's PicPro (cheers Kohli). Also sgamut worked well so long as you delogged it properly, problem was most folk didn't. I just found the 3200 iso for Slog2 a pain in the ass particularly having to mess around with nd even indoors a lot.
I guess my point was some of the best bits of work I've seen from the A7s - yours and the fella who did the Ganges film didnt need slog

personally I sold my a7s as I preferred how people looked on my old c100, but it is nice to see examples like yours where people do look good

To me eyes, one stop. ISO 12800 FF looks like ISO 6400 APS-C in terms of noise. I didn't look into it too much, though, and I may be biased because that's that theory would suggest.

On my last fan film I went in a completely different direction visually, with a high DR look (but not fake-looking HDR, hopefully) and a super saturated color grade inspired by BBC's Utopia.
It's supposed to happen inside a computer game, so, that's the why. Regarding the how, I used Colorista and Looks, trying to see how far I could go without going too far. Let's see if you think I succeeded at this, or if it makes your eyes cry in pain XDD
