a7s Picture Profile Compilation 2015

^ It's the one I liked the least, because of the nasty highlight. So great that you'd pick that one XD

@Patrick: what gamma curve are you using with Kholi's PP? If it's not slog2, then yes, it will clip the highlights sooner (but it may dig deeper into the shadows, if it's based on CINE4).

I'm using S-log gamma on Kholi's setting as well, that's why I'm so curious finding out what may be causing the difference in the highlight protection between the two profiles, since both of them use S-log as gamma (except for his Cine4-profile)

What were your zebras at? And your knee?

Zebras was set to 100+ in both cases.

Knee settings:
Kholi's PicPro S-Log2
Knee > Mode: Auto, Auto Set > Max Point: 95, Sensitivity: Mid, Manual Set > Default (I don't have the actual values atm, I'll get back with those later)

Samuels Flaat
Knee > Mode: Auto, Auto Set > Max Point: 100, Sensitivity: Mid, Manual Set > Point: 95%, Slope: +5

Cheers
//Pat

Why not just try adjusting the knee settings while you have zebras on? Pretty easy to test if it's messing with something.

One thing can also be sharpening. No matter what your gamma curve tops out at for white clip, sharpening and other edge artifacts always end up >100%. You'll notice even on gamma curves that don't go past 100% that when you switch your zebras from 100 to 100+, your zebras may disappear and reappear only at pixels adjacent to high detail or high contrast edges.

Great thread!

I'm familiar with the flat look (and settings) for grading afterwards.

But i'm wondering what are the best settings for a great look straight out of the camera? So that i have minimal grading to do afterwards? The reason i'm asking is that it would be great for low budget shoots.

Just use "PP off" / STD 0,0,0. If that's too contrasty/sharp, adjust constrast and sharpness to taste. IMHO you don't need to adjust saturation.

It depends on, what kind of look you like. But a good starting point is the cine2 profile of Kholi, perhaps with my modification (1st post) for little bit better yellow-tones. In my eyes these settings look very natural out-of-cam.

Thanks.

It's the usual thing that I spent a lot of time creating for my own use, and then thought "this rocks, I guess other people will like them too" :)

I applied the S-Log2 profile on Sony's new $230 HDR-CX240. is the XAVC-S codec consistent? initially it was recorded on the flat profile setting.

Here's my hat in the ring. You may find the color adjustments a bit extreme, but after extensive testing I find this gives me the best combination of accuracy, pleasing skin tones, DR, and gradability. Call it Steve's All-Around if you want to give it a name.

BLK LEV: 0
GAMMA: Cine 4
BLK GAMMA: Wide, +7
KNEE: Auto, 95%, Mid
COLOR MODE: Pro
SATURATION: +3
COLOR PHASE: -2
COLOR DEPTH: R: +5, G: +2, B: 0, C: +5, M: -3, Y: +7
DETAIL: -5

I still throw a very slight secondary on top to warm up foliage greens, otherwise I find this to be very accurate and pleasing. Saturation can be easily toned down. I was sold on Cinema color for some time, but I was not thrilled with skin tones using that setting. This seems more versatile and easier to grade. Use Cine 1 Gamma with a -3 adjustment to the Black Gamma for flat lighting, but oddly it seems to effect skin tones a bit, with a slight magenta shift.

Do you guys also feel like the A7s makes everything a little too green? Shot a multicam sequence today with two Canons and the A7s. Same whitebalance (kelvin) but the canons just look far more pleasing and real colorwise. Is there a picture profile that gets rid of that greenish cast?
