A7S PicPro Settings

Kholi, the sample frame of the boy in the restaurant, is that a reflection causing the splotch on the box/book that is out of focus, or over exposure and the colour correction from the 3-way gain/highlights influencing a colour where there is no detail? Excuse me if I am completely off track with what I think I am seeing.

IT's over exposed and that's what happens in the PicPro I'm using, but I'm about to pull a few values down to see if I can get it to go white in camera, and also balance a bit more yellow out of skin.

Then my time is up!

From Dave's a7S S-Log2 source file, applied a ridiculous amount of saturation in Premiere via Colorista II, saturation from default 0 value to 100 three times, in Primary, Secondary and Master sections, if a 100 represents a percentage, this would be 300%. Exported DPX from Premiere, dropped them into Photoshop. Mode is RGB, 16-bit, then sliced out a section to observe skin.

Left is source S-Log2 no adjustment other than what Premiere does upon import.
Centre has 300% or 300 unit value increase to saturation.
Right is the 300% saturation increase, followed by White Balance (Colorista - Auto Balance) taken from brightest edge of the collar. This is applied post - saturation processing, end of the chain or stack.

This exaggerates the 8-bit nature of the file and also highlights compression blocking. If this over the top example was applied to a less compressed and higher bit rate file, it would still look terrible if you apply enough saturation, save having more colour steps for gradients and would transition better, instead of jumping from a flesh like tone to a yellow/green blotchy whatever. :)

Here is the 16-bit PSD file if anyone wants to look at this without the JPG compression file created upon export from Photoshop and re-compression of the above image to this forum. I will remove the PSD file in a few weeks or thereafter.

Chris, I ay be wrong, but in this case I'm almost positive that the yellow you're seeing is from her make-up, especially around the eyes. It's likely got SPF in it and the freakin' camera's so sensitive to reflections that it's picking it up even in this situation. I'm okay if I'm wrong about that, but that looks like exactly what's going on here.

Here's a few more screen grabs using Kholi's PP settings a just a bit more contrast in post. This is the first time I'm seeing the 'noise' pattern on the a7s look more like filmgrain. Really liking it. (you can see more of the 'grain' in the out of focus shot)

(once again please try to disregard the compression)

Frame 4 is magnetic to me. Amazing mood in that one....ominous or revelatory depending on how you view it. Nice work! Would love to see the uncompressed but don't worry about it. I can imagine they look fantastic.

a7Sensitivity, indeed. I thought about make-up for moment, that's likely the main cause, especially around the eyes. The rest is an over the top example manipulating the saturation. Curious about WB selection and colour cast in various changing or mixed lighting conditions. Recording to an external recorder has benefits, based on Paul's examples recently. Very interested in this cam, appreciate all the exploration and discussion herein.

ssvet, great frames, the first shot with glasses having the mobile phone (texting) reflection in focus, great composition. Yes, the original files must be stunning.

thanks guys. Is it me or is there a better way of uploading these images? Looks like some of the uploads you guys do have a lesser compression *__*

I use Imgur, there's an embed code for forums.

Are you getting the highlight aliasing on the neon signs?

Been playing with the A7s all day. Lots of dramas. Managed to shoot the worst footage ever. I think I'm going to have to get a hold of Kholi's PP before I smash something

Of all the things I did run into highlight aliasing wasn't one.

Are you shooting APS-C mode?

@ssvet - Good frames. Camera has such a large feeling.

Strancali's got his cam back so I'm out of the testing loop for now, but I may have a suggestion for the settings. Will try to post later.

Thanks a lot Kholi. You managed to do a lot of very useful stuff in your short time with Strancali's a7s.

Na haven't tried APS-C yet. It was a manic shot, I really should have been using training wheels today.
This is your S-log PP with 2 Impulz LUTs and filmconvert, and no the camera didn't do something weird to her lips, she did  I just lit it with a 20w led camera light. That's the Pentax 35-105 'stack of primes'. I'm recording everything to prores4444, I don't have a 64Gb SD card.

The walls and the lounge are green. The LEDs I lit it with are a bit green too. I blew the highlights a bit on this one.

That's another good point about the A7s... For indie filmaker or documentary . You could light using small led in more ways than any other camera would. At least it's how i feel and one reason i bought it... Really like the image coming out from the sony, much better than the gh4 which i sold

It's pretty incredible for 8bit. The dynamic range is huge. I checked out some black and white profiles in filmconvert and they looked great.

Both look pretty good. And seem to hold better than most of the vanilla s-log2 stuff we've seen. Probably due to the modified curve + better codec (4:2:2) + proper exposure.

Here's a quick modification. I like the original color, this is just a small skin range hue adjustment + blacks pulled down (open in a new tab/window for full size).
