A7RIi vs A7SII - going crazy, cannot choose

For someone with F55, probably SII for the low light. As a stand-alone stills-video hybrid, RII is hard to beat ... unless you want to wait a month and see what the CES brings.

From the financial point of view, I'd think RII will hold a higher resale value over SII.

I also agree with this, but in any case the difference is very, very small: it will go either way depending on the specific needs of each user. Same as in the general market right now (GH4 vs 5D3 vs a7S II vs a7R II vs NX1 vs etc, different users will go for a different answer because they're all actually very good), but even more so because these two are identical in many ways.

For me, I think it would be an a7R II. But in fact I'm holding out: I don't need 4K unless it can go at 60 fps, and I don't want slog3 if it doesn't give me improved DR.

Soon, there should be four more "higher end" DSLR style cameras out - D5, 1D X MKII, A99II and the Panasonic version of Leica SL. I mean, if you're going crazy now ... ay, gevalt!

I am embarrassed, but are Nikon AIS manual lenses FF?

I have an old manual set, as well as DX zooms (which I believe are APC-S size), but I also have Zeiss CP.2 PL which are FF… so I think for me S or R would be ok, but I'm not a huge FF crazy fan either so not partial towards it. If I get a speed booster for Nikon lenses then I'm sort of ok with A7Sii me thinks.

Yes, AIS are FF (like most vintage stuff). And DX is APS-C.

Why would you want a speedbooster for the a7SII? If anything, it's the other way around: the a7S II is best when shooting FF (if you need 4K), the a7R II is best when shooting APS-C (just slightly better than its FF mode, less artifacts and less noise, but also much worse RS).

You just need Nikon F/G to E-mount adapters for A7SII.

PS. Some Chinese company just released medium format-to-E adapters.

If I only use my AIS primes or CP.2 PL then yeah the A7sii is ok, but I have a feeling my Nikon DX zooms will live on the camera (which are all APC-S lenses) and I need the ability to shoot 4K.

So I think for me the A7rii is better choice. Cheap adapter and away I go.

Is there any consensus on how many stops faster the A7sii is than the A7rii (at the same noise levels)? Obviously I'm not asking what the ISO range for each is. I've seen several tests, but I've never seen them converted to a number.

Some people reports it's only one stop, other ones two. Anyway it's really close and as people said rII seems like a much better all rounder. Now with new firmware fighting overheating I personally would defo go for R instead of S.

I tested A7SII and A7RII to match with my FS7 and ma choice is A7RII because AF is really better on A7RII perfect for my hélix gimbal with my batis 25mm @2.0 with this combo, i can do alone what two personnes can do with follow focus. To me A7RII have better color rendition and can do better photos but slowmo is 720P....

If you don't mind, I'm curious ...

You found the color rendition between the R and S to be noticeably different when using the exact same lens, exact same camera settings, exact same codec and frame rate, exact same lighting, and exact same subject matter?

Just trying to understand how methodical the test was.

Love to see samples if it's not too much trouble.

One of the main advantages of the a7S II over the a7S is the much improved color. Paulcurtis posted a lot of great tests around here. Big difference, specially in the shadows.
Whether the a7R II has the same colors of the a7S II or the colors of the a7S is a very important issue that won't appear on a spec sheet. I asked around several times and I never got a definitive answer from a knowledgeable user that had compared the a7S II and a7R II side-to-side.
Maybe what rudo_fr is talking about is related to this?

Hi Samuel H, i just refer about what i have read and saw on internet. My focus was on the AF performance between the two models.
For exemple in A7RII menu you have more control on AF than there isn't inside A7SII menu.
After looking YouTube links below, what i understood is that A7SII color rendition is more yellowish and color saturation decrease when iso increase.
Each time i saw side by side comparaison (with nomal light condition) on internet, i prefer A7RII color rendition but it is only my opinion and anyway, my choice is only focused on AF Nothing else.
I'm agree with you, it could be very intersting to have better face to face focused on colors rendition to see if i'm wrong.

Just picked up an A7RII to replace my A7S. Granted I plan on doing more stills than video with it, I'm thrilled so far. It's nice to have autofocus back on my Canon glass.

I use the A7SII .. I love it.. but to be honest, I don't see a huge change. I could have simply had 2 A7S and get more angles.
I find the Log3 grainy which kinda defeats the low light I wanted. Especially visible in 4K mode. the A7S is so affordable now too: http://amzn.to/1NesTgF

I feel pretty ready to order the a7RII, for photos and mostly Super 35 4K video. Only thing holding me back is that rolling shutter. Looks pretty extreme. Of course, i don't plan to shake the camera back and forth, but i do some gimbal work, maybe circling the talent or a change of direction here and there. Think i'd see rolling shutter in those cases?
