A7Rii In My Hand

In that video I see a bit more range in the highlights and maybe even less noise in the shadows (though its hard to tell even in the vimeo download, maybe the noise is just finer), and the A7S has visible high-contrast edge artifacts where the A7RII doesn't! Looks very promising especially considering ISO3200 isnt even base iso for the A7R SLOG2, right? It might be even cleaner at ISO800. ISO800 is the base ISO for SLOG2 in the A7RII, right?

In your video the A7S looks a lot more saturated and has weird clippy highlights compared to the A7RII, are you sure you have the standard PP7 SLOG2 settings on both? Matrix is SGAMUT, and everything else is at the default level?

Ooops! I had the A7S matrix set to CINEMA not SGAMUT... However, running the test again my feeling is:

1. Yes the A7Rii seems to hang on to highlight detail better than the A7S.
2. Noise levels are actually pretty similar, but look finer / more attractive on the A7Rii.
3. No edge artefacts! NO EDGE ARTEFACTS!
4. 800 ISO is less noisy and easier to deal with than 3200 base ISO.
5. There *is* a little moire and aliasing in full-frame 4k... But not a lot.

I'm off to compare it to my NX1 now.

Thank you for doing this Alex! Just wondering, was this in APS-C 4K mode or FF mode? Since the A7RII processes video differently in different modes, I am just wondering if that affects the DR.

It was indeed APS-C mode... Here are the shots - they're very similar. I've also added a comparison of DR between APS-C and FF 4K. It's night time, so all I have is a light :D I can't see any difference in DR. There is a slight difference in processing (if you look at the bands in the light shade they are yellow rather than grey in FF 4K) but that may be because I've zoomed it in FCPX so they're the same size.

Hello Alex. I've been speculating on another thread about the ways in which it might be reading the sensor, and if you read this - http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...ple!!!&p=1986557352&viewfull=1#post1986557352 - thread, then measuring crop factors for the different modes would prove or disprove a great deal.

To do this the camera ideally needs to be locked off, and the same scene shot in various modes (max res still image, 4K fullframe, HD fullframe, 4K s35, HD s35) with lens settings untouched between them to see how the crop ratio varies. Content of the scene isn't hugely important, but needs to contain an object with an easily definable width taking up quite a lot of frame?

Is there any chance you may be able to try this and post framegrabs........?

I posted before what I'm expecting:
But we need somebody to test this in practice. See what the crop figures are for the different modes. My prediction would be:

mode ------------------------ crop factor --- hor res

FF stills ------------------------1.0 -----------7952
FF video (HD & 4K) -----------1.035 --------7680
s35 HD ------------------------1.38 ----------5760 (NB crop factor 1.33 relative to FF video)
s35 4K -------------------------1.55 ----------5120 (approx. - assuming 14.7Mp, and crop factor then 1.5 relative to FF video)

The one I'm really interested in is any difference between the s35 4K and HD modes - with lens settings etc unchanged, does the angle of view change going between those modes.

Hey Alex,

Thanks for doing these tests.

I was wondering if you could summarize your findings as follows (whenever you have finished testing):

WITH IBIS OFF + MANUAL FOCUS:
FF + 4K = [Rolling Shutter Performance], [Sharpness], [Moire/Aliasing], [Low Light], [Overheating/Temperature], [Battery Life]
S35 + 4K =[Rolling Shutter Performance], [Sharpness], [Moire/Aliasing], [Low Light], [Overheating/Temperature], [Battery Life]

FF + 1080p = [Rolling Shutter Performance], [Sharpness], [Moire/Aliasing], [Low Light], [Overheating/Temperature], [Battery Life]
S35 + 1080p = [Rolling Shutter Performance], [Sharpness], [Moire/Aliasing], [Low Light], [Overheating/Temperature], [Battery Life]

If you could state the Codec and bitrate used that would be great too.

Thanks!

Thanks again Alex,

To me the most interesting thing about the comparison is the noise between the two.

If you download the 1080p original off vimeo and just look around 8 seconds and compare the chairs. The A7s is showing the classic purpley blobby noise and the A7rII is clean. Then even at 5.6 the A7s is showing more noise.

Doesn't this simply mean there's an issue with the processing of the A7s?

Alex, you did say that A7s was SGamut and A7rII was Movie, right? Do you feel that the blobby noise is totally gone on the A7rII in general?

The A7rII could also be using the IBIS to process the noise and denoise each frame, so if the degree of stabilisation is fed back to the processor then each frame can average over temporal back and forth frames.

Either way it looks much cleaner.

Damn and i was going to wait for the a7S II!!

How's the 4K Recording internal? And chance of any downloads of a source movie?

cheers
Paul

can you make the comparison video again , with FF 4K and 1080 internal recording VS A7s (FF always) and same colour space ?

Sorry guys, had some urgent work come in, so I haven't been able to do any more. But I'll follow up on some of the tests over the weekend :-)

Man... where do people come up with the stuff. Who could be expected to do all this? Why don't you just try renting one, or even BETTER realize that the IQ is probably way better than you need anyways and focus on actually shooting something interesting.

agreed. I would just ignore it.

@remsyarassi I totally agree with you! Some people really overdo it.
Nice to have very first impressions, but that's it.

Johnnie Behiri says -

Now, if you are in a rush and have no time/patience to read my full Sony A7rII review, let me summarise it for you in two sentences:

– Sell your A7s (or any other photo camera that shoots video you currently have)
– Buy the new Sony A7rII ….

I posted the link for his Cinema5D review on the News forum.

The tests are actually testing for these attributes, I simply asked for it to be summarized in a table for our reference. These attributes are very important in selecting camera settings for whatever you are shooting.

Allowing others to test is called delegation. We can progress further as a team. If we do everything ourselves we won't travel as far.
