A7Rii In My Hand

Just got mine in my hand from the postman! First impressions (compared to the A7S, which is what I've been using recently):

The size is nice. It’s a bit bigger / heavier than A7S. Has a sort of matt textured finish, not shiny metal.

Rolling shutter is practically non-existent at 1080p APS-C. Slightly visible (but still very good) in 1080p/4K full-frame. And hideous in in APS-C 4K!!! It seems to be at least slightly worse than my A7S’s in full-frame mode (test done by eyeballing the back screen whilst holding them both in one hand).

Photo AF with Canon lenses, specifically 24-105 f4 and 70-200 f4 (and a speed-booster... don't have a full-frame adapter yet), is mentally quick. Video AF with the same lens is just like the old days
😟. No AF-C and it shunts back-and-forth ponderously when you hold down the shutter button. Video AF with native lenses seems faster and more accurate than A7S. Face tracking was accurate, but slower than dual-pixel AF on C100, etc. I’d still prefer manual, but it might be good enough for some shallow gimbal work.

I’m off to find a memory card and see if I can get moire / aliasing to happen in 4K full-frame mode (even without a full-frame lens!)
😃. Back with some footage soon.

Postman not mailman, so UK based? Lucky you!

It would be super useful, if you have the time, to just upload some rolling shutter examples in each of those modes.

cheers
Paul

Thanks for the impressions! If you upload any tests of the AF, especially with native lenses, i'd love to see! Looking at gimbals, and AF sure would be nice.

Well spotted Paul - postman vs mailman :D

Here's a quick rough and ready test of the rolling shutter / moire / AF. Please don't judge the state of my office (it's just the way it gets when deadlines are piling up :D)

Everything is pretty good. I'm The only "bad" mode for rolling shutter is the Super35 4K... All other modes are very good for rolling shutter. I haven't seen any moire in any mode.

I don't have a native adapter (just a speedbooster) so there are "edges" in the full-frame shots. And I've posted it as 1080p (not 4k) just for speed of getting something up there.

AF speed on native lenses is pretty perky.

So far I love this camera!

Alex, that's not messy office, you have no idea!

Thanks, the full frame 4K isn't as bad as i thought. Did this have the IBIS on? I've found the worst thing with the A7s is the jello created by the small micro movements of your hand as you hold it still, IBIS would probably deal with that quite well, just leaving the more obvious rolling shutter to fix.

cheers
Paul

Full frame 4K is very well behaved! At the moment I can't quite see the advantage of the APS-C 4K mode.

I've just been out in the garden with the cats (nooo not cats!) with the Canon 25-105 f/4 IS... The IBIS (when set to the right focal length) seems to remove more of the micro-jitters than the IS in the lens... Not to shabby at all!

I'll post the files up in a sec as soon as FCP has finished rendering some *real* work :D

Can you test DR? :)

I'm leaning toward buying an A7RII to replace my A7S but I'm afraid of it having worse DR...

Why do you have a vignette on the camera with a full frame lens? Are you using a focal reducer or something?

Yes indeed (sorry!). It's all I have: two Canon full-frame lenses, but only a Metabones speed-booster adapter. And all my native lenses are APS-C sized.

I've ordered a commlite adapter, but that won't be here until Saturday.

Wow that was fast. Looks good to me! I think you sold me on the A7RII if I wasn't already. In that video I see a bit more range in the highlights and maybe even less noise in the shadows (though its hard to tell even in the vimeo download, maybe the noise is just finer), and the A7S has visible high-contrast edge artifacts where the A7RII doesn't! Looks very promising especially considering ISO3200 isnt even base iso for the A7R SLOG2, right? It might be even cleaner at ISO800. ISO800 is the base ISO for SLOG2 in the A7RII, right?

In your video the A7S looks a lot more saturated and has weird clippy highlights compared to the A7RII, are you sure you have the standard PP7 SLOG2 settings on both? Matrix is SGAMUT, and everything else is at the default level?

It's awesome how you can see the image circle moving around in FF mode, as the sensor is shifted to compensate vibrations.
