A working Scarlet!

Here is a 20 times 2/3 inch zoom f1.8-2 for $2000 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/231972-REG/Fujinon_A20X8_6BRM_A20x8_6BRM_2_3_20_1_ENG_EFP.html
I feel that the Scarlet does offer some interesting design features but I have a problem with a "Pro camera" with a single ring (one ring for all) fixed lens. I think Red way be having a problem deciding on what the market is for the fixed lens Scarlet, it started out as a Pocket Camera then a Pro camera. Since it was first announced the market has changed greatly as we see the price point for drop for flexible 2/3 to s35 provideo cameras. I am sure that Red and DSLR had a lot to do with this change. Will the Scarlet still be the affordable small Pro camera that is better that anything in its price range as it was once touted to be? We will have to wait and see, at least it looks like it may be here in 2011. What a year 2011 will be for new cameras Sony, Panasonic and Red all with new ground breaking cameras to choose from.

That FUJI lens is an SD lens, not HD. Nowhere near the resolving power of a good HD lens.

The Scarlet Redmote and side handle have 7 user assignable control buttons, a zoom rocker, and a thumb wheel in addition to the lens ring. I don't think convenient efficient manual control of this camera will be an issue at all. One of the goals of the design is to be able to precisely match and use two of these on a 3D rig with unified remote control.

Oh 3D now I get it. I for one do not need a 3D camera. Give me a great 2D camera and I will use it to record three dimensional subjects and stories.

Unprofessional video ...

Unprofessional video ...

Why would a company like RED leak such an unprofessional video of a product that could generate them millions of dollars over the years. That vimeo clip has bad wobbly camera mic audio and just shows some dude flipping the camera around like he doesn't know what he's doing. RED needs to effectively demonstrate the Scarlet so that we can understand what is going on with all of the features.

The codec is awesome, the concept is great ... but the "one ring fits all zoom/focus/iris" thing is just impractical. And the 1/4 inch audio jacks are like ... what?

An Panasonic AF100 with P2 cards and AVC-Intra 100 would smoke this camera.

Because Tonaci Tran has 5 Red's right now and ready to buy more. RED let's him do what ever he wants. Asia can be a big market for RED.

And would cost twice as much and not record raw.

Look, I have an AF-100 on order, but lets not get weird with the comparisons.

Also, I believe, being a modular system, you can add the pro XLR/SDI connections as a module.

I've only been doing this for a few years, I'm sure if YOU had an AF100 native you could smoke me if I had a RED EPIC. :) This is a fun thread.

Ehhh, maybe, maybe not. But I don't want an AF100. I want an Epic and a 2/3" Scarlet. Honestly, I'd really love an Alexa as well. But whatever. I'm doing more still work right now than anything else. Two Hooters Calendar shoots coming up... :)

I saw that one in my search but pretty sure it won't work, CMOS vs CCD, something to do with a prism splitting up the image to red, green blue
someone posted earlier (maybe this thread) that all three controls (iris, zoom, focus) are also controlled from other parts of the camera including side handle

I'm surprised no one mentioned this:

Scarlett now avaialble

wow !!

I'm there with you. I'm keeping the t2i for stills and as an s35 directors viewfinder. Only thing that would sway me is if canon brought out an eos aps-c camcorder for less than 5g's before the fixed and that ain't likely.

I haven't been to america in ten years, why didja have to remind me of hooters... sigh

yeah man i know what you mean. I want an ikonoskop, my post was a big up and the point that a person shoots, its always more than the camera etc etc...

i'm still at the stage of falling on my ass, it is tiring but fun... i'm still clumsy when i switch back to having to take stills every now and then.

Cheers man, erm... here's to two thirds...

Perhaps comparing a fixed lens Scarlet to an AF100 with interchangeable lenses, is a bit like comparing apples and oranges.

My point was that the Scarlet fixed lens camera is a little off beat with it's funky ergonomics, 1/4 inch Audio Jacks and the - Focus + Iris + Zoom - "Ring of Confusion."

With the Panasonic HMC 150 lowering in price (which means, it's probably going away), I am interested to see a possible new Panasonic Fixed Lens micro 4/3 camera to compete with Scarlet Fixed.

I know that RAW is a superior codec but DVC Pro 50 looks good and AVC-Intra looks freaking amazing. When Panasonic starts combining their micro 4/3 technology with the P2 codecs ... things will get interesting.

RAW is not a codec. And that's where all of these arguments start to fall down. REDRaw does happen to use a codec, but it's designed around the same structure as AVC-Intra at 3+ times the bandwidth. It's also downsampled to get 1080p out of which gives AMAZING flexibility in reframing without loss of image fidelity. Even prepping for 2K filmout it's downsampling.

For many professional workflows, what's coming out of the camera is the BEGINNING of the workflow, rather than the end-to-end many consumers are familiar with. The mere fact that you can debayer and OLPF in post (think moire and aliasing with the Canon DSLRs being removed 100% in post with a single click, but still shooting 5K stills) makes it a far more flexible tool for post.

I know offline workflows are a veritable unknown to many shooters here, but there is a REASON people are snatching up Epics as fast as they can get made, and there is a REASON that you see some of Hollywoods biggest films now being shot on a camera that is not even publicly available yet. Cinema pro's want this camera, this feature set, and this workflow.

I don't know if it is going away so soon. The DVX100B is still around after a price reduction a couple of years ago. Hell, the Canon GL-2 is still around, and retails for approx. 2500 bucks on B&H.

I think it would be foolish to discontinue the HMC150, as a lot of event videographers/ENG people might not want to have to deal with interchangeable lenses and the more extreme depth-of-field of the AF100 in super stressful run-and-gun situations.

Well, as to your first question, it's been done somewhat. Google cinetape or panatape.

But the real problem with autofocus isn't following "an actor". It's following the ACTORS in a scene. Because unless all you do is focus on one person per shot, the camera cannot read your mind and know that it needs to change focus between person A, person C, back to person A, then over to person C at the back of the room. All in the span of a couple lines of dialog. But the First AC knows that, knows the marks for all of them, and can hit them. While computers may have the speed to out-process a human, they lack the ability to predict. Perhaps at some point when the AF systems can be fed the dialog, and can be fed focus points along with each line of dialog, you might have something. But that's just not possible yet.

I couldn't have said it better. TOTALLY AGREE WITH THIS:thumbsup:

Who wants to program in detailed focus adjustments, if their were a device to do it. By the time you go through all that, you can have an actual AC, pull focus. And not to mention, there's something to be said for a real human pulling focus. It's a very precise skill, that I feel is more of an art form than job. It's one of the many things a computer will never be able to finesse like a person can. Im really tired of technology replacing humans especially when they do a half assed job.

+1 for a real living breathing AC!!!
