A warning about the LA-EA2 adapter with FS100

That is exactly what sony want it . At first sell La-ea2 and alpha lens as much as they can (people go to shop quickly buy our new modern la-ea2 + alpha lens -they say . After all of this they will give us sony e mount 18-55 2.8 with af and oss and maybe E-28-75, E-70-200 f2.8 money ,money ,money ,money ,money

Of coarse it is. They are a business. but they've made it clear they are going to actively expand their e mount glass line up, and until that comes to fruition, you have to use what you have available.
I did my research, bought 2 la-ea2s and 2 a mount zooms in the range I needed (and apeture) several months before it even became usable on my cams. Not my ideal setup but works for a lot of what I shoot.
If sony ever came out with a 18-200 constant F4 with af and oss as good as the kit lens, it would probably never come off the camera. (and I'd gladly pay alot for it.)

+1, but I would like to add that the lens be black, and also that the focus ring is linear. And if it's alpha mount to take advantage of the af speed, all the better.

Not only you . For many of us could be a great tool but this is almost impossible . I have never seen lens like 18-200 constant F4  . Any way my wish is get 17-55 f2.8 ,24-75 f2.8 ,70-200 f2.8 all of them with E MOUNT +oss (and I'd gladly pay a lot for it.)

At now I consider to get la-ea2 + sigma 17-50 f2.8 which has stabilization . So I think is better way that sony 16-50 f2.8 . I have to find out how sigma behave with la-ea2 now ????????

What I think some people are missing is the difference in the types of autofocus between the la-ae2 and the e mount system. At least from what I've read, the translucent mirror af is much much better than e mount af.

not on video it isnt. emount glass is video optomised. a mount is not.

I am also eager to see more fast zoom e-mount lenses, but the issue will still be the awful focus-by-wire. I just purchased the Tamron e-mount 18-200, which basically is the same as the kit lens but a bit smaller and better looking as its black. It's good for run and gun type work. But since I got the fs100 without the kit lens, and later realised I need a allround lens option, the Tamron is much chreaper than the Sony 18-200 if bought separately. Will post some pics of my setup and results soon.

How big would be 18-200mm F4? I suspect a lens like that for this big sensor (APSC) would be over 50 pounds.

There are plenty of PL zooms with a great zoom range that are faster than F4 like the Angenieux 24-290 T2.8 or the new Canon Cinema EOS zooms like the 30-300 T2.95-3.7. Nice items to rent for big, specialty jobs ;)

Dzien dobry

Does the Tamron talk to the FS100 data display? Does it have OIS?

Tamron 18-200 seems to work like sony 18-200 . Autofocus just behave little bit different .

Otherwise I do not understand why tamron give us lens like that . What poin of that is it ??? Why tamron did not make it with better light (F) . I would be glad to see this lens with better light or kind of 18-75 f3.5-4 . Any way that is a good sign . We will see more E mount lens soon . Sony wake up

Am I correct in thinking the new firmware will give normal iris control with alpha lenses. Not like the la-ea1 which jumped open and then went the chosen f-stop which would be useless to me. I keep thinking metabpnes but am worried about the odd report of it losing communication with the lenses every so often.

Thanks, Michael.

Sadly, no. With the LA-EA2 the iris (manual only) still opens wide first before each adjustment.

You're right, and it's awesome on my still camera, but I find the limitations impractical for video work, outside of very controlled conditions.

Sony road map for e mount lenses includes new la-ea3 in 2013 .I hope this one will be able to work perfectly .We will see .

I feel Tamron in this case have done what they and other third party lens companies do: give us basically the same products that the big companies do, but cheaper...;)

AF at apertures larger than 3.5
-----------------------------------
I noticed that in Manual AF mode, the AF center point is still active and and it turns green to indicate that it's in focus.
It works at 3.5, 3.2, and 2.8 (which is the max aperture on my lens - Sigma 17-50 2.8 EX DC OS HSM).
I don't have an alpha mount lens with a larger aperture so I haven't tested it with apertures larger than 2.8.
So the LE-A2 adapter, at least the center AF point, works at larger apertures - but Sony decided not to implement the AF functionality on the camera.

Of course, it will not NOT work at smaller apertures ( 8.0 or smaller).
Even the phase detect AF sensors on the new Canon 1D X DSLR do not work at 8.0 and smaller.

Hybrid AF
-----------
It's interesting how Nikon implemented a hybrid auto focus on the J1 and V1 mirrorless cameras - using both phase detection and contrast detection.
Fuji also uses this on some compact cameras.
But instead of using a transluscent mirror, the phase detect sensors are built into the sensor.
I've never used one, but they claim to have the fastest AF on mirror-less cameras.

This can potentially be implemented by Sony with the transluscent mirror.
For example use phase-detect AF to track a moving subject.
Or use Phase-detect to first quickly establish focus, then use contrast-detect to 'fine-tune' the focus.

That point is just an "in focus" indicator. It doesn't control AF.

That's exactly what I said.

And if it's using the AF sensor on the adapter, and not the contrast in the sensor, to indicate that it's in focus, then Sony can potentially use that to perform AF at apertures larger than 3.5. After all, if you use that same lens on a regular SLR camera (without the transluscent mirror), it focuses at max aperture.

Edit:
I also want to add that Canon had used a transluscent mirror on the old EOS 1n RS film camera - and that one focuses like any other SLR camera, at max aperture. So there's nothing about transluscent mirrors that's preventing the AF to work at max aperture. Sony simply decided on the '3.5' magic number.

But I can understand how it will not work at small apertures at all (smaller than f8). However, it should work up to 5.6 -- because it works on lenses with max apertures smaller than 3.5.
