"A Verse Before Dying" - AF-100 Western Short

Waiting for clearance to use some photos, and the lighting diagrams.

All the juicy stuff will be in there.... ;)

Thanks so much for that. We'll fly the AF100 when we get it but probably the GH2 first. We had some issues with cmos chips so ended up going with CCD on our chopper. The site is shabby but we did some pretty cool RC aerial last year... not to hijack the tread or anything. www.skycamchoppers.com

Footage looks great. Really love the tall grass shots.... KUDOS.

I have to admit I was surprised at how well the field of grass shots hold up. The Nano, by the way -- we didn't use it all that much, because part of this was to learn how well the native camera held up, but -- it's so tiny and inconspicuous that it's something that I can see using a lot, just to have it. I liked it more than I thought I would, and would definitely use it for effects-heavy 4:2:2 or chroma key work.

But the native codec really did very well. Very, very well. I'll let Stephen say what his editor thought of the footage.

And I totally agree with Timur and some of the others who say -- the best is yet to come. The interior stuff looks just fantastic, and you haven't seen any of that yet.

Nothing new there actually The HMC 150 has the same codec so I expected that.

True, but the HMC150 isn't pulling it's image off one large sensor with much higher resolution than the final 1080p.
I wasn't so much impressed with the lack of breakup as I was with the lack of aliasing.

Maybe I missed it, but what the workflow process to get the footage in Final Cut Pro? Was it just Log and Transfer or did you use Compressor to change it Apple Pro Res first?

Just a couple of quick comments.

First off, thanks so much for putting this together. It must have been TORTURE working as a member of this team....so thanks for putting up with each other long enough to put this together. :) It's funny because this camera has the potential to do everything that the Scarlet was trying to do....which is....putting an affordable tool in indie film-makers hands, that doesn't have any MAJOR WARTS. Watching this trailer (which I have now...like 30 times)....I find that I'm not noticing ANYTHING. I have to go out of my way to "see" anything related to camera technology....instead...I'm just seeing the outcome...the message...the story. BOTTOM LINE: No more excuses! It's clear that this camera has the potential to be a "WEAPON of CHOICE" for a film maker. I JUST DARE YOU OR ME OR ANYONE ELSE on this forum to "out grow" this camera. I'm not saying that it can't/won't happen....I am saying that you'll need to become a (near)full-time film-maker to do it.

Second....as impatient as it felt to wait for the trailer...THANKS FOR GETTING THE WORKFLOW RIGHT. Whatever you did....there wasn't the ~painful~ noise....(even though clearly NOT from the camera)....I won't have to listen to "Hey calibrate your monitor!"....when I know that it's a workflow issue (YES...the calibration of the monitor would *help* but that wasn't the problem.) This looks GREAT. No distractions...just great. Thanks for taking the time to get that right. Not a single post about noise....all to your credit for working on that. Thanks a million......so nice to AVERT the problem in the first place.

Third....it's going to take some real focus and will-power to NOT buy this camera. :) As soon as Barry releases his DVD....I may have to check myself into a clinic to avoid doing it. Happy days! The F3 is officially off my radar. I'm sure that it will be great...and I'm sure it will be better than the AF100....but so will an EPIC and an ALEXA.... But I can see that my hands will be full with this one....let's just see if I can keep up! I challenge everyone here to do the same. :)

I had to run the quicktime through Sorenson in order to convert to play on my PS3 and 50" plasma, and it looked fantastic. Very clean. I also applied a 2.39 crop and it looks to me as though most shots could have been framed for 2.39. It looks very convincing as cinema film with that crop. I love that aspect ratio visually too.

On the AVC, I think it looks good like this, but what I really want to know is how it will hold up downstream of this. How will it look encoded to DVD, or encoded to Bluray and then projected nice and big on a screen. I wonder if that's actually where recording to Nano is going to hold advantages over the AVC, and differences seen.
