A quick note to DVXUser

DVXuser is definitely one of the most civil and well maintained forums on the web. No question about it. And, not only does it have a plethora (that's right, I said plethora) of useful information, but it's also got some of the coolest and most talented people on the web.

I'm surprised the Mods haven't banned me for my lack of talent and coolness. They must some times grade on a sliding scale or they have some slots available for charity cases.

So thanks to everyone for allowing me to be part of this community and for letting me know what it must have felt like to sit at the cool kids table.

I think what separates this place from other forums is that the mods here will gently warn you when your getting out of line, and only take action when you step over it entirely. In many other places, the slightest infraction will get you silenced, banned, or publicly ridiculed by the mods themselves.

I'm not active on any other filmmaking forum, but there is a support forum for a very popular piece of software (that will remain nameless) where the slightest infraction will be met with scorn. Something as simple as asking a question that was asked once before (even months earlier, using terms that wouldn't readily come up in a search) would be met responses such as "why should we bother helping you FOR FREE when you can't even be bothered to read?" This coming from official mods, not other users.

Things like that never happen here. Even when a user asks the same "what's that clunk" question that is in dozens of posts and at least one sticky, the worst they might get is "please do a search about this, it's been answered before." And even then, 99% of the time the responder will also provide a link to the actual answer, rather than making the person do a "punishment search" for penance.

Even the trolls here are generally civil... And the ones that aren't are dealt with silently enough that anyone not reading at that exact moment will never even know they were there.
 
This is an environment of welcoming, and you should just get the hell out of here.

Absolutely and there have been times when I wonder how in the hell do they stick with it. I've actually been motivated to send a thank you note to a mod on occasion. I know for a fact that they also deal with situations that are not it the public eye, i.e. issues at the pm level. They definitely deserve the credit for maintaining the quality of this site.

Exactly. As it has been said: "Vigilance is the eternal price of Liberty". We definitely share in that responsibility and a lot if not most of the people here seem to get that.

Double Dittos. This place is my virtual film school. It's brought me from "zero" to "something" that I never imagined I could do. Can't imagine how much time and money I would have wasted without this site. Thankfully, the standards are high and they are staying that way.

I think that one of the things that makes DVXuser different is that there just aren't that many people here that have something to prove. The pros know they are pros and don't have to make anyone feel dumb. The newbs act like newbs (in a good way...acting like that have something to learn) and guys like me, who are somewhere in limbo, just quietly suck up knowledge and make fun of Barry.

There's not much more you can ask for.

But when someone does get out of line, the post or thread just gets 'disappeared' with little fanfare.

But see, that's the thing -- we know you've got the talent AND the coolenss. We've seen it. Well, we also saw your butt crack* so that's not good (that almost DID get you banned), but we've seen your filmmaking chops. I think I speak for the entire membership of DVXUser when I say that we're getting a little tired of waiting for a follow-up. :D

Thanks Barry, mods, members and even undocumented lurkers.
I was skeptical of the concept of an online "community".
DVXuser, and those mentioned above, proved me wrong (gulp... sniff!)
Now if I'd just get of my a$$ and make a film...
 
In terms of courtesy and general maturity-level DVXUser has really spoiled me. There are sites I frequent where I really do sometimes find myself thinking why can't this place be more laid back like DVXUser...?
