A quick note to DVXUser

I was recently checking through the interwebs to forums on sites that are not threads of dvxuser.com. And I must say that the internet is a very annoying, highly irritating place. I was just wanting to check some specs on the Canon 7D vs. the 550D. It was on a photography based site, yet the responses were terrible to say the least. A guy asked a simple question, and someone else reamed him for it, going as far as calling him a retard for not already knowing those differences. "You shouldn't even be considering buying a camera..."

So, first, I would like to say thank you to all of you out there that have NOT done that, and instead actually helped out people that didn't understand certain things. I ask a lot of questions, and you all have helped a ton.

Second, I would like to say thank you to Jarred and all the mods for keeping this site running as smoothly as it does. I've seen threads disappear before, so I know it's not always easy to keep civil. So on those off days/weeks/months that we have, the mods come flying in to save the day and help us keep our cool, vicariously making this place much better. Without the mods, we're no better than yahoo answers. Well... maybe a little better.

Anyhoo, I just wanted to drop in and say thanks!

I said this years ago... in response to somebody bitching about too much mod influence.

Gardens are beautiful when you plant stuff for people to appreciate, take care of the weeds, and do a little pruning from time to time. Without a gardener... a garden is just a random chunk of land... full of weeds. It's too bad that not everybody appreciates the work people put into gardens (or parks)... just go to any one in your area and I guarantee you'll find trash and evidence of careless behavior.

The only thing that keeps something that require maintenance nice... is people making the effort to control all the unwanted factors that ruin it for the rest of us.

Bravo! DVXuser... for upholding a quality standard.

Absolutely. This is one of the main reasons why I've been here for so long.

I despise the immature knowitall name calling internet kids. The internet is a forum where it's too easy to speak your mind. Lukily here the only time people speak their mind is when it's constructive criticism, or just fun jesting.

Thanks, we do try hard. We've been doing this for a while, 7 years now, and we try to make sure that we provide a valuable service and we do expect the users to do their part too. Yes, we do prohibit certain topics (politics, porn, prosletyzing, etc) but in doing so, we've avoided the meltdowns that plague other forums. We appreciate all the users who cooperate and help build this into being such a useful resource for so many -- last I checked, we had about 58,000 registered members, and lots and lots and lots of unregistered lurkers.

So a) you're welcome, and b) thanks to all of you for all the contributions and for respecting the policies that have helped build this into such a great place! :D

Personally, I think the leadership on this site is really what makes it so great. So hats off to all the moderators for jumping in and keeping things going so well....

I don't know about you guys, but while I respect what the mods do, there IS a lot of name calling and immature actions. Has nobody ventured into the DSLR section of the board lately?

Granted, when posts are reported - its cleaned up immediately, so it is our duty as members to stay on top of things as well...but to say there's none of that? Come on now..

Hunter, I'm not saying that's there's none of it. Though the amount of it here is by far so much less. And people will disagree anywhere you go. It's a given. But most of the people here are respectful enough to at least start out with:

"While your synopsis of the 550D vs. 7D is pretty accurate, I have to disagree with you on ______."

Instead of:

"because it isn't "practically the same thing", retard." [actual opening quote]

I'm not trying to paint the picture of perfection here. But because people give respect here, it's a community where people can learn instead of it just becoming a battle of "you stupid n00b."

I frequent the AE, FCP, and User Films section mostly, and I'm just starting into DSLR (as of today), so maybe I will see some. Who knows. But I can guarantee it's much much less than many of the forums out there that cover the same types of media.

I used to get all my info from trade magazines. (Not so long ago)

I was reading an article about DSLR's yesterday and thinking to myself, "95% of this info I knew already from DVXuser." I think this site is ahead of the curve, no doubt. So thanks to the mods & members as well.

Hawk, those are valid points and there's a reason I stick around here as I'm sure you and many of us do. DVXuser provides a wealth of knowledge and I do recognize the level of respect and maturity is higher on this board than that of others.

To be perfectly honest, I don't think its only applicable to the DSLR craze - I just used that as a recent example. I think there are a lot of 550D vs 7D, 5D vs 7D, 7D vs all and that is where many of the arguments come from.

Basic structuring and rules would eliminate this in my opinion. Perhaps a sticky in each camera section, where the first few posts are the camera (7D, 5D, T2i, etc) VS each other competing cameras in its price range or a little above.

It sounds redundant, but it is one of the most commonly debated topics and often turn into heated arguments. There are tons of new members joining, especially because of the DSLRs...they all aren't aware of how DVXuser works and while it's good to ban them, delete their posts or what have you...a better way to try to get rid of all these arguments would be a collection of stickies.

I'm not trying to tell the moderators how to do their jobs, but the system isn't perfect and that's a fact. There will not be a perfect system but let's strive for something a little closer than the current state.

I'm willing to put time and effort into helping out if that's needed,

Kegan

How about ban any thread that is that uses VS in the thread title haha. Or like Kegan says anytime someone starts a thread wanting to compare and contrast it all gets dumped into one giant sticky. If someone wants to start a flamewar it's in one single thread and people can do whatever they want in it. This would leave the rest of the threads to discuss what most of us want to talk about when someone posts a new piece of footage: The Quality of that footage. I've used so many bloody cameras under the sun as have most people, but I try to avoid the comparative aspect as much as I can, unless it's something like "I needed this camera, because that other one wouldn't have a hope in hell of getting in".

I think the boards in general have been a bit more subdued ever since a fella by the name of spike was banned and was no longer here to stir up as much trouble. Nowadays most comparison threads don't de-evolve into ridiculous anger.

vs threads can be very poisonous. And, with the recent proliferation of new releases, they are much more common than in the past where we only dealt with it every couple of years.

Necessary in some respects, but also a kind of thread that often brings out the worst in people

Hunter, I am happy to read any proposed sticky's or other suggestions that you might have.

Everyone is really helpful here. I've learned a ton. Anybody who isn't on board with the vibe going on here doesn't usually last too long. Either they leave, or they get bronzed.

This is the best free education i could ever hope for when it comes to digital filmmaking. Thank you to everyone here for giving my remaining brain cells something to latch on to.

That's happened to me quite a few times, and every time it makes me wonder "Why did I buy this magazine again? Oh right - for the ads..." Seriously though, Landmine should claim royalties anytime someone from here "makes it big" (okay, maybe not so seriously :)).

Barry, I think you meant "proselyte/proselytize" (unless you were saying it in a diff language).

Mods, thank you for all of your hard work.

^ Off topic, but I love that cartoon & the message. When I finish my fest entry, I'm taking a nice long vacation.

Going slightly off topic but:
DVXuser is a database full of knowledge and in 2009 someone, don't know who started a dvxmagazine but I don't know what happened to it. We should start it up again. Allow DVX members to write up there own articles (reviews, tips & tricks, current news, etc) and someone could start organizing it together that'd be nice.

I was going to be the resident smart-a$$, and put a picture of someone playing a violin.

But, I do enjoy it here, discussing things film and related conversations. The mods here deserve a lot of the credit.

Kudos, everyone!

But.......I........can't...........help............myself............:
