A look at HVX vs. Andromeda

Hi All,

From what I understand, an Andromeda user just posted some 8-bit 720p footage at this link...

Impressive... Although, it's hard to see where the compression is the culprit or the DVX's CCDs and glass are the problem with some of the edges and pixellation. IMO, I haven't seen anything out of Andromeda that really shows better than what I've seen out of the HVX. I applaud Juan and his efforts and I almost sent my DVX100 original to him for Andromeda conversion but sold it instead... Perhaps I will convert my 100A that I still have... But I don't know if Andromeda would fit into my workflow that well... Having to cart a capable computer for capture with me everywhere I go, usually in the snow, uphill both ways and all that.

There is straircasing of the worst kind in cabling on the top middle of the frame. Compression does not do that. The vertical res is not more than SD (480 pixels).

So from what I've gathered, it seems that most people would choose the Andromeda over the HVX, if they know for sure that Juan would not make the Andromeda for the HVX.

But why did Juan choose to use a USB 2.0 port instead of Firewire to begin with?

Could it be because the pre-existing firewire port on the DVX would conflict with the firewire 800 port that could have been used?

No, simply a method of simpifying things. External box/vs internal set-up. The downsize, it won't work with anything above SD NTSC (not even PAL)

USB2 provided the most cost/time effective solution for transferring data
from the camera.

Jeremy, but isn't Firewire superior to USB for transfering video?

9.5 stops of range way outdoes the HVX for the "film look" really, it looks EXACTLY like film, a scan of it anyway!

has NO "video" feel at all, ever, even with the worst hard lighting you can throw at it, still has a "film feel"

A raid 0 with 2x 2.5inch 7200rpm disks will never be fast enough for SDI.
I wouldn't say never. Lacie's little big disk seems to be quite fast. After couple of years it will be fast enough for some lightly (3:1?) compressed hd-sdi.

Limo, what camera model (2/3") you are using now and what will be that bigger future model? I might have some use for those very high framerates sometimes...
