In keeping with a competency test for newbies, why not one for the people who give answers, information or advice? At least let the posters (newbies) know if the person who is giving the advice really knows what there talking about.

Put your experience right in your profile:

Do you make a living in this field (Video or Film), if so how many years.

Are you a student.

Are you a hobbyist.

What type of work do you do, Audio, Editor, TV Commercials, Commercial long form video, Director, DP etc.

It's probably only fair that when someone asks a question it's good to know the background of the person who is answering their question.
Just a thought.

Hey Gary, I think your on to something, but then there willalways be that percentage that lies just a little bit when signing up. But I definetely like the idea of letting people know there specific field of film/video

Dyrseve989,
You're probably right, but for the most part you'll have an idea of how to respect the answers. Right now the only criteria is how many posts an individual makes not their knowledge. A Silver, Gold or Platinum member status seems to imply a hierarchy of experience and knowledge to a new or inexperienced poster.

I often wonder if someone has that much time to be on this board and post all day long ( to get a high number of posts), what do they do all day?

Anyhow, I do agree that when someone (newbie) posts a question that is answered so clearly in the manual and they haven't bothered to read it. It can make you a little crazy.
By the way:
"What is that I click I hear when the camera is off?"

DVXuser is my render buddy... When I render a clip, I come here while it processes, like now... should be designing the DVD really though! Better go I guess!

Newbie here.. Sure i understand why some people get upset when there is a post asking a question that was just posted a few days ago . On the other hand maybe some people don't have the time to look through all the post .
What i have been doing lately is looking at all posts , when I find one that answers my question or maybe something of interest, I'll copy and paste into wordpad and save in a folder for future reference .
We all started with no experience , lets not forget that . What may be a stupid question to you , may not be to the one asking .

Arielman,
Your point is well taken, but consider what you said. "maybe some people don't have the time to look through all the posts". It takes time to answer the same questions over and over also. I think the point here is to make a good group everyone needs to take responsibility and be aware of the pitfalls of not helping out by doing some of the homework yourself.

PS That's a general statement and not targeted at you specifically.

Mine has been churning since 4pm! It's 10pm nearly! Grrrr... i need a G5!

Damn VBR 2-pass Mpeg2!

Or go to wallmart and buy a $300 PC, stick the newly leaked PC version of MAC OS and throw out your G5. ...Supposedly it runs so much better on PC hardware :-)

...but then you wouldn't have time to hang here...

*gets out flamethrower* That's just because PC hardware is so much better. :D *jumps into fallout shelter to avoid the coming wrath*

I'm using DVXuser for an upload buddy right now. I've got to get 13 hours of footy onto the hd. Have to get something out the door for ABC by Tuesday.

OK but still. What about a visual profile added to the join date, location and posts on the left?
Doesn't anyone think knowing the background of the members is a good idea?
I noticed that a forum called dvcreators network forum has you fill out a profile for everyone who is posting or reading to see.
I also don't understand why eliminating newbie posts should be an option. Wasn't everyone a newbie at one time?

In another forum I visit the moderators (who should know what they are talking about) give users points for good answers or general good behaviour. If someone posts BS all the time, points are removed. You (and only you) can see the reason why points were added or removed from your account. While I'm not the biggest fan of rating people over the internet I think this gives users a pretty good idea of someone's status on the board and if the moderators approve his/her answers. If people could just "claim" their knowledge I'm afraid there would be three dozen Michael Ballhaus on here sooner or later.
Just my .2 euro cent ...

moebius,
That's a very interesting approach, actually a very good approach. Maybe that in combination of the profile. I feel that the profile would demand that posters create information for all to see. If they are not telling the truth about their profile, the approach that you mentioned will prove or disprove it.

Not to beat this thing to death but people come here to learn. I have seen people give answers that are not correct and when confronted or questioned they defend their position with emotion or claim that they are a respected poster because they have made 40 gazillion posts.

One of the forums I've seen that "rates" users is B-roll.net , a news cameraman site. Not sure if its done exactly the way Moebius is speaking of, but it might be a good way to see who knows what they're talking about.

My two cents: I'm a newbie, so I'm sensitive to the criticism that many newbies are a drain on people's time, and I would sooooo hate for there to be tests instituted to keep us newbies from bugging people -- but at the same time, I don't think it's useful to make people 'prove' they have expertise in this field, either. We're all doing our best, newbies and oldbies, both. Sometimes there's a mess-up, but it's rarely fatal. :-) We can't really protect each other from each other. We have to keep our eyes and ears open, look around, and learn from our experiences, good and bad. That's not such a bad way to do things. It makes us responsible for ourselves and keeps us from limiting each other's freedom unnecessarily. (No matter how much good advice I get, I'm still the one who decides for herself what advice to act on and what not to. Nobody is responsible for me but me. (I hate that.))

So I hope we keep this amazing forum open, free, and self-regulating. I love coming here, and I hope to keep visiting for a loooooong time to come.
