A Case for the AF100

Unfortunately, no carry on, no go for me...While I do occasionally ship things to locations, I like at least having the cam by my side.

I totally agree. Carry on is the only way for me. Had a couple of horror stories with Air Line lost luggage in the past. Wouldn't chance it for 1 second. Carry on is a must.

Hi,

Well the tough part of trying to make an inclusive Marketing Bulletin about accessories, and the case being one of them, I just got the last of the info I needed on another unit that I wish to include. That said, I would say that by the time we are back in business in the new year, the cases will be available at the end of the month in January.

I logged 50,000 air miles in 2010 with this 'ThinkTank' Airport/International V.2 I used it as the carry-on for my GH-1 gear. It easily accommodates an AF-100

I've been using the Pelican 1610. Love the idea of the Pick-n-pack foam to arrange perfectly for what I'll be using.

I second the 1610 case. It's incredibly versatile with the pick and pluck foam. And Pellican's cases are all standardized. You can re-order the foam in a jiffy. They are located near where I live and the people who work at Pelican are really great. It's a relatively modest sized company compared to how much product they produce!

Thanks, Jan. I do like what you've put together. Not sure I can hold out that long. Should be getting my cam next week. Was hoping it would be a simultaneous intro. I realize these things rarely work out that way.

Carry on is a must for me too. I'm using a PortaBrace BK2NR for my just arrived AF100. It works great. It's a backpack, it is carry-on size (just), fits all the expensive and fragile essentials, also has a slot for my macbook pro. A cheaper option too....

Can you buy extra dividers for it? I'd love to see a shot of your AF100 and items in it :) I am evaluating new options. I was thinking Pelican Case, as I think them a lot, but that level of protection isn't necessary. I am looking more for a solution to bring my laptop and lens and such. that I can carry around with me on the shoot.

Because we want to be very portable with our gear for stills and video all has to fit into our backpacks. Believe it or not, but the first thing we did with the AF100 was to check out our bags. And we were lucky to find the right one: ThinkTankPhoto StreetWalker HardDrive just fits the bill for us.

The Pelican 1620 is probably the case that i'll end up purchasing. I've seen people use it for the Sony EX3 and it fits like a glove with virtually all the extra gear. I like having foam that perfectly wraps the entire case. Pelican makes AMAZINGLY strong cases. I've never seen a broken one.

I've had one for years, and I love it!! I have the one with the dividers so you can change the configuration easily down the road if need be.

Yes they do, but although Pelican cases might airtight and waterproof, they definately are not heat proof.

I put my A1 in the trunk of my car early one cool morning .. the day heated up and by noon the bird was cooked. I let it cool down before opening it up and the cam is Ok .. won't do that again.

The 1510 is adv as airline carryon but after you load it up, at most airlines it's overweight. Check that out first.

Cheers.

Yeah, that's definately a problem. But I haven't been lucky enough to have a ton of work where I fly a lot. When i do, i'll get a more flight friendly case.

Isn't the 1510 like 17lbs empty?

Mine (1510) weighs 13.6lbs empty with all the padded dividers in it. Might weigh less with the pick 'n pluck foam.

I have never had my carry-on weighed, but for many US people-pushers the weight limit for carry ons is about 40lbs. (I only looked at Delta, AA, Continental.)

Air France is 30lbs. Air Canada is 22. In that last case, if weighed, we'd have to pay a fee, but I might not notice it mixed in with all the other fees: fuel surcharges, privilege of being molested by a stranger at the airport fees, squeezing more people into the cabin fees, basic physical laws of the universe fees, etc. etc. Oh can't forget about the fee to cover the cost of administrating all the fees. i always forget about that one.

Only been dinged once for overweight cabin luggage (HVX in Porta-Brace 2550 hard shell case - we had two of them between 3 crew) and that was on a Cathay Pacific flight to Hong Kong that the airline had comped our crew. We were going to shoot in their Hong Kong Flight Kitchens…
Never on any other flight has anyone tried to weigh my camera carry on. (except on small aircraft where I've been weighed along with my gear)
