<$994 hyper to go with RODE ntg3

Ok. So I was originally going to purchase two mics, a shotgun and a hyper, and both were going to be in the $1-2k price range per mic, though I was having a lot of trouble deciding and would also need to save up for a very long time. Then, I heard about how good the rode ntg3 is and the great deal with the blimp and everything, and I have decided on that (won't purchase for a while though). So now, I need a hyper. I really really like the famous schoeps based on what people have told me (never had experience with one myself). However, I just don't know if I could afford one at the moment (or for a while). I heard of one guy getting a used one for 500. Where can I get a used one? I would spend up to a grand.

Supposing I couldn't find a used schoeps, I would like to know what hypers are good. I need some suggestions for hypers in the $500-994 range, but absolutely not over 1k. I need something that delivers high bang for the buck, basically a hyper version of the rode (and it would be great if the sound qualities matches the rode's). Please give me reasons for the mics you suggest. I honestly have no idea when it comes to picking mics like this. Low handling noise is important here as well.

Hmmmm yes, I think I will go with this mic unless I happen to find a used Schoeps by the time I have the money. How would you describe the sound qualities of this mic?
 
I own the AKG CK98 and think very highly of it. It's quite transparent and offers great value for the price (i.e. < $400). Here are links to a few shorts I've made with it. The third (below) was the most challenging as the mic was mounted on a stationary boom above the talent but it still did a great job of picking up the dialog clearly. The room acoustics were by no means optimal in either case (i.e. uncovered, parallel walls) but I've been extremely pleased with the mic in the 5 months I've owned it.

I've always read good review on this setup and I've been thinking about getting it.
but I've never really got a chance to see sample footage so does anyone know any links to it?

I don't understand your video. What does it mean to talk black? Do I need to be black to say homie?
 
I have the AKG hyper, it sounds OK on a preamp body modded by audio upgrades, I wouldn't use the stock preamp electronics. The capsule is fairly smooth, and similar in sound to the cardioid with a narrower pattern. It truly pales in comparison to the Schoeps MK41.
You might also consider the hyper pattern from the AKG multipattern mic.
The are very hard to find, but the Elation 201 hyper is very good.
Basically, the MK41 is the best I've heard.

I don't know what a ck93 sounds like on a modded preamp body but it sounds absolutely fantastic on the stock preamp body. Compared to the $250 Oktava I had been using, the AKG represents a major leap forward for me. Even boomed outside this mic is fantastic. As far as comparing a $350 AKG to a $2000 Shoeps, I think you'll agree that the MK41 is in a league all it's own. You just can't expect comparable performance between those two.

Ok you bleedin yellow bellied desnorcovitch, I DID SEARCH... and I found very little info... like I just said. I always search and usually it helps. I did this time, found about 4-5 threads relating to the mic and read them all, then came back here and asked if anyone had any more info.

Overall I guess it seems like a great mic, and I read a post that indicated that the difference between the Blueline ck93 and the C480BCK is almost nonexistent except in some lower frequencies but apparenlty this is barely an audible and only on some subjects (no dialogue).

Now, about the schoeps, I mean yeah, that is hardly fair. I can accept that the AKG's are not schoeps, but DrDave, you are making it sound like the AKG's suck. But really, only an extremely experienced audio person would ever notice a difference and it would be very hard to do once all of the tracks are layed together in the final track right? But I guess that you compared them because of my initial post which mentioned a Schoeps as an option. I really won't be able to afford one new though to be honest. I find a lot of these CMCs selling for around 400-600 which is great, but they have hyper capsules usually and buying a capsule seperately would make the total come out to around what it costs to buy a new mic. I just wish there were some more used CMC hypers out there.
 
For used Schoeps, check out Trew Audio, Coffey Sound, and Location Sound on the web. But be forwarned, they don't lose a lot of value over time. $500 will get you a used Schoeps preamp/power module but you'll need to add the mic capsule to it as well. Schoeps bought a couple of years ago in some cases may actually be selling today used for the same or a little more than their original purchase price.

Varying the terms can help. Bear in mind that there will be some duplicate hits when you do this but it's a great way to find stuff if you are getting short hit lists. Another thing that helps is attitude.
