8mm ultrawide not fisheye! (sigma 8-16 f4.5-5.6)

I am waiting for Canon's new wide angle, rumored to be out soon. This Sigma on my 7D would give me a wider FOV than my 16-35mm on my 5D2. That just seems strange and somehow - wrong.

haven't heard about canon's. what's the rumored range/aperture? a lot of rumored canon lenses seem to come out about 3 years after the rumor pops up though.

+1 on rumored focal length for canon's new wide angle.

I'm down at B&H today on my lunch break and I'm hoping to have a look at that sigma 8mm zoom

Just strapped this baby up on a t2i. Shot this in B&H at 8mm f4.5

are you sure that's 100% non fisheye?

look at the lines - they are straight

The build of the lens felt pretty solid. I tested the AF by panning quick while close to objects on the desk and half pressing the shutter
and it responded well, no hunting around at all

some stills also at 8mm f4.5

Pretty neat lens. Would have to have both a TOkina 11-16/2.8 for aperture and this sucker in the arsenal, for Music Vids and rather stylized shots.

Not a bad price for it, either.

My tokina 11-16 is my go to lens!
I'm only interested in this zoom for the 8mm f4.5. Maybe too expensive for me

There is definitely a bit of barrel distortion going on - it's hard to get away from this wide. Whether or not you can live with it is up to you.

i would not call it minor or negligible either.

11-16 tokina in 1.6x

or 22 to 24 in full frame seems wide enough. why go with so much distortion when there are other lens wide enough for any scene that do not present that much distortion.

it seems only suited as an effect lens than a practical wide lens to me. same category as fisheye.

Real Estate photopgraphy (and increasingly, videography) is a big market. And this is exactly the type of lens they need. This is going to be a very practical lens for alot of people, becasue not everybody has the freedom of being able to back up.

Personally, I would live to put this thing inside a water housing and shoot some surfing up close and personal. Up until the whole HDSLR thing it was really difficult to get really wide, close up footage of surfers similar to the those angles still photographers have teased us with for years, but now with the HDSLR's and lenses like this are making it possible.

Maybe you will only consider it a 'special effect lens' but I can think of plenty of people who would bring home a daily paycheck using this lens.
