85mm Prime vs 50-255 Zoom

I need a lens past the kit view (18-55) and came to the assumption that as of now 85mm would be fine .

Second the 50-255 zoom from Canon seems to be getting a lot of great reviews even though the aperture is not fixed and other faults the lens has.

So my question is this, for about $300 should I get the 50-255 zoom or the 85mm prime?

Thank you

get a fast prime. 1.4 or faster. having nothing but slow lenses in the kit kinda nulls one of the major reasons for having a 7d over the traditional camcorder - low light ability.

This lens cost about $250 and I have seen some amazing pictures taking with this lens, I just hope that the 85mm focal length would be enough to act as a zoom lens, also you make an excellent point THANK YOU!

Avoid the variable aperture lens, they will bring you nothing but pain in the end.

Get the 85mm and start building a quality set of lenses.
